God damn. How does a white guy - not just that, but an Irish one, for Christ's sake! - get so much soul? Anyway, Astral Weeks is the obvious Van Morrison pick, but it's that way for a reason - this is a fantastic record. Like all of Van's best songs, the 8 tracks here succeed because they're intense on a spiritual level, and relaxing, harmonious, and comforting on a physical one. It's a combination that never fails to hit you, but like a certain Mr. Marley said, when it does, you feel no pain. "Sweet Thing", "The Way That Young Lovers Do", "Cyprus Avenue"....food for the soul, pure and simple. Astral Weeks is dynamite. And no, I don't know why.

Van Morrison was one of the more creative and talented people in the contemporary popular spectrum, and the stuff he was making in the late 60's and early 70's were truly wonderful singer/songwriter and blue-eyed soul. Astral Weeks was a groundbreaker, a contender for the most important record of 1968, a year which featured The White Album, Odessey And Oracle, White Light / White Heat, and We're Only In It For The Money. The tactful blending of influences from folk, jazz, blues, rock, and classical combined with Morrison's irreplaceable vocals and expertly done stream-of-consciousness lyricism make the record great enough, but the sense of cohesiveness throughout the entire album makes it easier to listen to than one would assume. Basically, I don't know if anyone but the man himself knew he was capable of this when the only thing they had to go off was Blowin' Your Mind!. Amazing.

Not his most accessible album, but still very good. If you're looking to get into Van Morrison, listen to Saint Dominic's Preview or Moondance first. If you liked this, give Veedon Fleece a listen.

Astral Weeks is not quite a top 20 album of all time, as many would like you to believe, but it's a great and influential folk rock collection (it even foreshadows GY!BE's post-rock), and, most importantly, it's as close as Van Marrison has ever been to sounding effective without showing off. And for that *some* praise is welcome.
