4.5 superb | Knott- EMERITUS | October 20th 09 | There is absolutely nothing wrong with Manchester Orchestra's 2009 record; not a second goes by without something impressive, be it an intelligent, smirk-inducing line, an emotionally-delievered vocal, a pumping riff or an incredible hook. I don't even really know what it is. It's alt-rock. It's indie-rock. It's fucking brilliant.

4.5 superb | hollowcrown | April 3rd 09 | So, for my first review, I'm going to be analyzing a new release that doesn't hit shops for another 2 weeks or so! I'm talking about the new Manchester Orchestra record, which is indie-rock from Georgia. The Manchester Orchestra members hit the studio shortly after the success of their critically-acclaimed 2008 album 'I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child' and have now released their latest epic, 'Mean Everything To Nothing'.
'Mean Everything to Nothing' embraces singer Andy Hull's (Right Away, Great Captain!) voice to the max, with perfectly guided guitar and bass riffs to exemplify both a soft rhythm throughout the 11-song album, yet also some incredible breaks.
Remastered songs such as 'I Can Feel A Hot One' bring out the best in the bands seemingly endless talent, yet the album changes from faster-paced indie rock to softly sung lullabies throughout. Tracks like 'One Hundred Dollars, Shake It Out and You, My Pride & Me' are ones likely to stick on the mind, not to mention the formidable 'I Can Feel A Hot One'.
Definitely one of the best albums that has been released so far in 2009, and fans of Manchester Orchestra will not be disappointed by the bands latest effort.

5.0 classic | AtavanHalen | December 22nd 09 | It has come to this. Mean Everything to Nothing has become an expression of more than just an indie band and their music. It's an expression - of anger, frustration, fear, faith, love, death, desperation, need, depression and the finest of lines between pleasure and pain. The music soundtracking it is a repulsive scowl towards normality, filled with abrasive riffs and pulverizing movements; and Andy Hull's vocals make no compromises by either treading lightly through the atmosphere or ripping through with razor sharpness. Songs like "I Can Feel A Hot One", "Pride", "Shake It Out" and "The River" capture the imagination and assist its listeners in thinking, feeling and completely encapsulating the moments that are contained within them. Mean Everything to Nothing is 2009's most heartening experience, and one that will remain with you for quite some time to come.
"You mean everything to nobody but me..."

4.0 excellent | Douglas | November 30th 09 | An album that has solidified that Manchester Orchestra are a force to be reckoned with. The groups sophomore release is probably their strongest mixing heaving indie/rock tunes with emotionally touching ballads.

4.0 excellent | DaveyBoy EMERITUS | October 29th 09 | On 'Mean Everything To Nothing', Manchester Orchestra put the "rock" back in indie-rock. Right from the beginning, a fuller rock sound is apparent & it holds up the few relatively less memorable cuts here. Meanwhile, lead vocalist Andy Hull seamlessly moves from passionate screams ('Shake It Out') to catchy sing-alongs ('I've Got Friends'), and from desperate howls ('100 Dollars') to emotional storytelling ('I Can Feel A Hot One' & 'The River'). A pleasing step up, this is a consistent & mature LP from an accomplished band. Recommended Tracks: I've Got Friends, Shake It Out, I Can Feel A Hot One & The River.

3.0 good | convergejd | April 19th 09 | A very good album. I can't help but feel that some of the songs on here amount to a type of 'soft' plagiarism, however. They just sound SO much like other bands at times (Nirvana, Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley, or Brand New) that it feels like a band that was not only influenced by those bands but more like a band taking parts from those bands.
Still, it's not bad at all.

5.0 classic | Nicksput | April 17th 18 | MEtN is the breakthrough album from Manchester Orchestra. It's an emotional, sometimes humorous ride, and it truly sounds inspired. The sound I would describe mostly as straight forward hard rock or alt rock, and they have this weird way of sounding derivative but also sounding like nothing else. It could have been released in the 90's and fit right in. There's some sludge, a superb ballad, unconventional rockers and an overall Southern charm that helps to set them apart. The record took a while to fully sink in, but once it did it, I was hooked. My favorite songs are The Only One, Shake it Off, I've Got Friends, I Can Feel a Hot One, My Friend Marcus and Tony the Tiger, but they are all bangers. A creative record that doesn't try too hard to reinvent the wheel.

5.0 classic | barcafan21 | September 25th 12 | This album holds and will always hold a special place in my heart as the album that got me through the toughest time in my life. Andy Hull's voice is majestic, possessing a massive range of singing styles, being capable of soft (album highlight I Can Feel a Hot One) to shouting (Shake It Out) and never sounding uneasy. The guitar work is excellent, but it's the overall composition which takes this album to the next level. This is the album that made me fully realize how much i love indie. Also, contains the best hidden track ever in Jimmy, He Whispers.

5.0 classic | pauldrakedsd | February 1st 11 | Can you say masterpiece? This album from production to arrangement and lyrics is a classic album. Manchester Orchestra stepped it up so much on this album, the intensity and diversity of this album is ahead of its time. I will be enjoying this for many years to come.

4.0 excellent | Progmaster85 | January 29th 10 | One of the best indie records of 2009; the best from Manchester thus far; highly entertaining album and an intriguing growth for Manchester Orchestra. It's an excellent record, not really 'superb' or 'classic' but the replay value is stunning. I may have bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Mastodon at 5, but I listen to this album like it is a 5. One of my favorite indie records.

4.5 superb | ninjuice | December 4th 09 | For me, Mean Everything to Nothing is a bit of an enigma. I both love Andy Hull's voice and find myself slightly annoyed by it. Manchester Orchestra's wonderful brand of alternative/indie rock isn't truly unique, but I can't think of anything that sounds really similar to this. It's amazing, but almost feels like it shouldn't be. Personal indecision aside, the chilling "I Can Feel a Hot One" is reason enough to listen to this album, and the rest of it will make you thankful you did. It's catchy, it's clever, it's accessible, it's fun, and the best part? One gets the feeling that they're capable of something even better.

5.0 classic | PatrickMF | November 25th 09 | Manchester Orchestra is a band for me that came out of nowhere. Upon further research though, I come to find out that they had a highly praised debut album, I’m Like A Virgin Losing A Child back in 2006 and that this new album, Mean Everything To Nothing, received a perfect 5 star review from Alternative Press magazine. Apparently I was behind the band wagon for awhile. I fell in love with “I’ve Got Friends” and then I decided to check out their entire album. I was blown away. Indie music isn’t usually my preferred genre of music but there is just something about this album, not something; but rather, everything about this album is amazing.

Ever since I started to learn about different types of music, Indie music was always intriguing to me, but what happened was that I could never find one band that really interested me. When I heard this band I finally knew that this is what I wanted, and this is what I needed to hear. This album tows all sorts of lines. It’s just the perfect amount of weird (read: Indie), with the perfect amount of catchiness. The dynamics are INSANE; the perfect amount of loud gritty, dirty, raw guitars with beautiful guitar melodies, and note for note perfect piano melodies from Chris. Chris’s little touches to every song are so important. Andy Hull’s vocals are so delicate, fragile, and emotional at times, and then so gritty, raw, and biting at other times. This man is a beast at 22, and I see no stopping him.
Lyrically Andy’s writing is superb. Some of the lyrics are enigmatic and cryptic. Others, you can really here how much forgiveness this man thinks that he needs. They are hopeful, and hopeless. Sometimes they feel really spiritual, others almost nihilistic, and at all times they are 100 percent honest, and personal.
The guitar work is refreshing. The guitar work is some of the best of the year. Trust me, if you like guitars, you will like this album. The drum work is subtle, and explosive. The bass lines, are, exactly how they should be.
The flow of this album is so smooth. Every song flows right into each other seamlessly. This album has alternative songs, catchy songs, grungy songs, dark and brooding hard rock songs, an acoustic and string laced song, etc. These songs are Indie at the same time they are catchy enough to be on the radio without sacrificing any substance. In fact, that word truly sums up this album; substance. And so does perfect, and complete, and balanced. I could keep going on and on about this album but I wont.
Buy this album.

5.0 classic | EverythingEvil2113 | October 6th 09 | I'm finally hearing this for the first time and this might be my favorite album this year. Great indie rock stuff with powerful vocals. Some songs are angry, some sweet, but always powerful (and the word of the soundoff is...). There are also some very catchy moments that will have you bobbing your head and singing in your head for hours. This just gives off a great energy and if you're looking for one of the better releases of '09 then look no further.

0.0 | OlDirtyPaule | September 9th 09 | Well, I had a hard fight with this one. In my ears, there's too much drama in the vocals, lyrics, and overall attitude. Furthermore, the songs are very similar to each other and quite predictable after a few seconds, i.e., there are no surprises anywhere around - not even tiny ones.
However, I can not deny that almost every song has, indeed, a highly memorable bridge or chorus to offer. It's a little like AC/DC you know: If you like the one song they've got to offer, you'll probably like this album for its consistence.
3.5 stars.

4.5 superb | bobafe6604 | May 14th 09 | If this is indie, I want more of it. Manchester Orchestra proves that expert instrumentation is not necessary to create poignant music; no, instead singer/songwriter Andy Hall and co. birth a beautiful epic, built of witty lyric and wall of sound. The songs are deep, catchy, and impossible to predict - more than often tumbling into hoarse screaming and thick guitars and shifting to slow acoustic atmospherics the next. An indie classic - while not perfect, (lack of outstanding musicianship) "Mean Everything to Nothing" will mean a LOT to many people, including myself. A must buy.

It's catchy, the vocals are abosolutely incredible, and the instrumentation (while being simple) is very efficient. And the lyrics are just as good as the vocals. Solid album from a great band.
