Hull's songwriting noticeably progressed with the addition of his friends, and the band courted its first fans with anEPrelease.YouBrainstorm, IBrainstorm, But Brilliance Needs a Good Editor thus appeared in 2005 through the band'sownlabel,Favorite GentlemenRecordings. With the EP out,Manchester Orchestra began playing shows around the Southeastandaddedkeyboardist Chris Freeman to themix. Buzz about the band's music begancreating a stir beyond the Atlanta citylimits,andthe guys were invited to play slots at the South bySouthwest and Lollapalooza festivals in 2006 beforebeginning toworkontheir full-length album that summer. The resulting I'm Like aVirgin Losing a Child was issued by the year's end,offeringupapoignant collection of memorable hooks and thoughtful narratives thatshowcased a similar style to acts liketheWeakerthansand Death Cab forCutie.
Eventually, studio intern turned guitarist Robert McDowell joined the lineup permanently, and as a steady buzzcontinuedtogrow —especially onInternet blogs — Manchester Orchestra snagged an opening spot on Brand New's largely sold-out tourinspring 2007. Theincreased exposure caughtthe interest of Canvasback Recordings, which reissued the band'sdebutalbumthat summer. A second EP, LetMy Pride Be What's Left Behind, followedin October 2008, and the band remained inthestudioduring the subsequent months to perfect itssophomore album. Released in 2009, MeanEverything to Nothing foundthebandworking alongside producer Joe Chiccarelli, famous for hiswork with the Shins and My Morning Jacket. « hide |
