| 2.0 poor | TurnTheOtherWay | June 21st 06 | When I first got City Of Evil, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I had Waking The Fallen and loved it, but I heard CoE didn't have screaming. However, I still bought the album. It was a lot more experimental then WtF, which was not a good thing. Matt Shadows developed a rather whiny singing voice that just annoyed me. Synsyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance used more guitar harmonies, but they used them so much that their effectiveness wore off quickly. Johnny Christ took a more prominent role (i.e. I could tell there was bass), but it wasn't really enough to save the album IMO. The Rev's drumming is still as good as it ever, and was a highlight of the album. Overall, CoE was quite a letdown for old A7X fans. I'm not really digging the direction of the band.

| 0.0 | Jom STAFF | January 31st 07 | This is the first Avenged Sevenfold album I heard straight-through, so I can't really comment on their metalcore days and the supposed direction the band is going in. I had heard bits and pieces of songs from Madden, for instance, but these guys were getting a lot of hype, so I figured I should check this out. City of Evil is a great album, but it's burdensome to get through, even with the absolutely phenomenal drumming - the fills, the "riffs," and the rhythms are all spectacular. The collective musicianship of the guitarists is stone-cold solid as well, with vibrant leads, flashy solos, and scorching main riffs such as in album opener "Beast and the Harlot," and while discovering the brilliance of harmonization makes for a typically-pleasant listen, it's irritating that it's found on basically every track on this album, making the music at times torturous and annoying to listen to. The instrumentation is, for the most part, excellent, and the vocalist takes a lot of flak - he's a bit hit-or-miss on this album - but along with the harmonization, where this album drives me bonkers is in its epic song lengths. Hearing the harmonized guitars excessively over sometimes on, sometimes off vocals for over five minutes a pop for eleven songs is borderline tedious. I'm not knocking the musicians - they clearly have a world of talent - I just feel that they could explore other musical passages other than epic song lengths and resorting to harmonization by default. Highlight tracks for me: "Beast and the Harlot," "The Wicked End," and "Bat Country."

| 3.5 great | Steerpike | November 7th 06 | Abandoning the metalcore approach they started with, Avenged Sevenfold have taken more influences from hard rock and classic metal on City of Evil. The album is much more melodic than anything they've ever done and uses epic song structures frequently. Though the band is still working on fitting into this new direction, particularly vocalist M Shadows who is still growing into his actual competency (as opposed to the previous albums where he had no training whatsoever), they do show great promise with catchy hooks, clever songwriting, and blazingly melodic solos and harmonized leads.

| 0.0 | AtillaTheHunn | November 8th 06 | this band is the ultimate example of popular musics mass media attempts and successes to fortify a scene to the general adolescent public to make money. This Band has nothing to offer but pathetically overproduced watered down music, and no talent. the only thing they can offer is the selling of their image which they do extremely well.

| 4.0 excellent | Drunken Viking | August 27th 06 | City of Evil, the third installment of the A7X full length discography. Guitarists Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance definitely stepped up their guitar playing, the leads were colorful and often times harmonized. M. Shadows' vocals were definitely different, and not quite as strong. The songs were longer, and there were orchestral instruments and an entire choir used. Johnny Christ was still slightly inaudible, but when heard his basslines were definitely better. As for the Rev, his drums sounded amazing, and he was faster and better on CoE than ever before.

| 2.5 average | Inflames | February 1st 07 | Ever since Shadow's throat popped....its been down hill ever since. I guess i give them credit for using his inability to scream to go mainstream...but i myself would have started looking for someone else. City of Evil sucks...really bad, there are some good things about it...but most of it sucks. It's too 80's for me...and I like some 80's music. I dont know, it just seems like what they are doing right now has been done to death. On the contrary I thought "Waking the Fallen" was one of the best CD's of 03.

| 5.0 classic | Sevenfold | August 27th 06 | Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance are awesome, I liked the screaming on the past albums, but I think A7X has made a huge improvement from before, they sound better (Though I like Waking the Fallen and Sounding the 7th trumpet a lot) , honestly I don't care that M. Shadows doesn't scream anymore, if you look at the band from a different perspective than just hate, you'll see that they have 2 amazing guitarrists, one hell of a bass player, and one of the best drummers I've ever heard

| 1.5 very poor | branflakes911 | May 14th 13 | The music here isn't really the problem, but it does as little as posisble to help. Considering how long the songs are, you would expect much more compositionally, but you basically get overlong verses, too many choruses and solos. The solos are the highlight, but the guitar tone is totally boring - it's the same as the verses, which thus are totally punchless. And holy crap are the vocals terrible. M. Shadows cannot sing, but at least when he was making (quite good) metalcore that wasn't a problem. Now that he's trying his best to be Axl Rose the fact that he sounds like a 75 year old chainsmoker tripping on acid is a bit of a detriment. I preferred A7X's honest if derivative brand of metalcore, but even their later, fully de-clawed attempts at pop-metal were better than this. This is the nadir.

| 3.0 good | Brighter Than the Noonday | May 8th 13 | It awkward production cannot go unnoticed and A7X is obviously trying their hardest to be something that they aren't. They are still some great songs on moments on here, though. The effort is solid, but the product is a bit inconsistent.

| 0.0 | ImTheOnlyThugInTheBuildin | December 31st 12 | The worst vocal performance the band has ever done-even worse than that found on Soudning The Seventh motherfucking Trumpet-coupled with pathetic lyrics and terribly structured songs as well as too much fucking variety in styles makes this one of the most terrible albums i have ever heard. Bat Country is a great song but even that cant save this, the lead noodling around all the time does little to help its cause, and only The Beast And The Harlot does anything else to add to the album. Suppoedly their most experimental album to date, experimental in this case means they ditched the screaming cuz M Shadows fucked his throat up like a fag, and started writing gay, unelite music. What the fuck happened to this band seriously after they started by making a little bit of fucking progress on Waking The Fall

| 5.0 classic | AnEpicDeath | September 21st 12 | Yes, I fived this. Sue me. I listened to this a lot during my teenage years, so it has added sentimental value. Moving on: it really is an exceptional album, of a class A7X had not approached and would not approach again. They tossed aside their metalcore background to make an old-school heavy metal recordd with a heavier punk influence and modern techniques. Vocalist "M. Shadows" gives an unbelievably nasal delivery, as usual (does he even know he has a mouth?), but thankfully the vocal melodies are catchy and well-crafted. The guitar work is driving, memorable, and (moderately) technical. The drumming is fantastic. "The Rev" displays remarkable precision and executes punk, metal, and *core with equal proficiency. There are a few downer tracks ("MIA" and "Betrayed"), but the album is otherwise consistently strong. Album standout "Sidewinder" deserves special mention. Not only does it showcase each musician at his best, but it reaches outside the album's usual base of influences, drawing inspiration from neoclassical metal, world folk music, and latin jazz.

| 5.0 classic | Adam | December 15th 11 | City of Evil is the album that got me into metal, and well, music in general."Sidewinder" is A7X's best overall. City of Evil showcases a metal band with progressive flairs showcasing that style best, and it will always be a classic to me.

| 4.0 excellent | SlickNewton | November 23rd 11 | Despite what a lot of people say, concerning the dramatic change in musical style for this album, City of Evil is a good listen. From lyrical references to drugs, movies, tragic events, and the bible, Avenged Sevenfold manages to always keep you entertained (except for Strength of the World). A prominent change on the album, is Johnny Christ's role on bass. On City of Evil, he is utilized more and can be heard. The rest of the band are still as good, despite the change in Shadows' voice.

| 0.0 | AXDS | January 9th 11 | My absolute most guilty pleasure. The album everyone loves to hate is one of my favorite albums. This is THE album that got me into music, which makes it close to my heart. Before this album, I would only listen to mainstream rock that bored the shit out of me. Then I listened to this album which sounded unique and refreshing compared to all that other shit I heard. If it weren't for this album, I would not have heard 80% of the music I heard today, or have heard of most of the genres I love now. With a unique vocalist with a broad range, great song writing, interesting experimentation, and a variety of influences, this holds as a masterpiece in my book. Shame I can't say the same about the rest of their albums.

| 3.0 good | tom6 | October 24th 10 | I can't help but wonder if all these people who call The Rev a great drummer have ever, like, heard any metal, ever. He's average. He does double-bass beats. He's like Chris Adler but far less technically capable. He's like Lars Ulrich with really good feet. He's like Joey Jordison if Joey Jordison was in a slightly shittier band. He's like if the guy from Trivium was a worse drummer. He's like if Nicko McBrain had lost control of half his body. He's like if Mike Portnoy had never heard Neil Peart. He's like Richard Christy, except he isn't like him at all because Richard Christy is a fucking god of metal drumming and The Rev is some dime-a-dozen metalcore kid. Stop reaching for the top shelf with your fucking words and save "amazing", "brilliant", "fantastic" and the like for things that actually deserve it.

| 3.0 good | Dan Phillips | July 19th 10 | This is not a bad album by any means, but it just lacks the punch the first two did. The musicianship itself is probably the best on this album. Although the drums are a bit bland and the guitar is a bit whiny at times and the bass is inaudible, it's still a very entertaining listen. My biggest problem with this release is the vocals. M Shadows is not a great signer, and his clean vocals really drag this down. It's a shame he stopped screaming, as I was one of the few who thought he did well on WTF. Also, the guitar seems way too clean. Oh well, not bad, just could have been so much better after the brilliant WTF.

| 3.5 great | fistikis | December 20th 09 | well, first of all i got into avenged sevenfold some months before. i have to say that the first song i heard by them was blinded in chains. well.i got blown away by the catchy chorus and lyrics. so istarted listening to them and i realised that there music is great! shadows voice is incredible, syn can really play the guitar(although he isnt the best guitarist out there as many claim) but this has nothing to do with his greatness and the fact that he is a very good songwriter and performer. the rev knows how to get the *** out of his drums and zacky and johnny just fit in perfectly. so the first album i listened to was city of evil. i really appreciated their music and until lately i never realised that shadows used to scream! first of all BEAST AND THE HARLOT is my favourite song on this album. the guitar work on this song is awesome and i really got into it when i first heard it. BURN IT DOWN is great for the first two minutes but after that i feel its getting a bit boring (my opinion) i love BLINDED IN CHAINS although the part after 5 minutes shouldnt exist. it just doesnt fit with the rest of the song. BAT COUNTRY is simply an amazing song! the chorus and guitar riff are very catchy and igot this song stick in my head for a long time after i heard it. TRASHED AND SCATTERED is a very good song with a nice guitar riff at the beginning and the song remains good til the end. SEIZE THE DAY is in my opinion the worst song on this album. i cant stand m.shadows singing in this song and in burn it down. i know that he had been training with axl roses vocal coach but does that mean that he has to sound like axl??? no way. this song doesnt fit in with the rest of the album and it is boring. dsappointment. but after that SIDEWINDER is incredible! from the awesome guitar work at the beginning ntil the flamengo inspired acoustic solo at the end. simply epic! THE WICKED END AND STRENGTH OF THE WORLD keep it up with sidewinder. two incredible songs with great vocal and tempo changes. just awesome. every a7x should really appreciate these songs even if he is an old school avenged sevenfold fan(me included). BETRAYED is a good song but nothing special. ALTHOUGH IT WAS WRITTEN IN THE MEMORY OF DIMEBAG(R.I.P WE LOVE YOU!) MIA is a great song with nice melody changes from slow at the beginning to more heavy towards the ending. a great song to end a great album! so all in all 3.5 out of 5. and i want to mention that some songs semm far too long and are a bit boring after listening many times. but thats subjective. everyone have their opinions. i would recommend to any open mimded and not die hard metal fan to give this album a try. its worth listening to. (PS: if you listen to waking the fallen before this album dont get disappinted! i know that COE is not as great as WTF but its really good stuff. have a try! i hope you enjoyed my review.

| 4.5 superb | Deathlyavenger | September 12th 07 | Well ive tried as hard as i can but i just cant seem to understand all the stick these guys are getting for this album, because it honestly is truly awesome. Thsi is some of the best guitar and drumwork ive heard in while and hey u gota give them credit thier vocal works unique like or not. So i'am not gonna you a track by track review but ill tell you expect whwn you pop this album into your cd player. I think we all know and have heard enough about Matt blowing a vein in throat but theres no point denying it has had a major influence on their music, lots of debate about wether they are even metal anymore never mind metalcore. Well its very hard to define a particular metal genre especially one as wide as metalcore, bust rest assured avenged sevenfols are metalcore.Simply because matt doesnt scream doesnt these guys cant put thier pedal ot the metal and rock. To be honest a7x have learned thier traits from the best of the likes of metallica and judas priests and perfected it. One thing that has always impressed about them is thier Lyrical prowess, these guys can write. From waking the fallen till City of evil thier theme has been consistent. In city of evil they excelled i this field some of the lyrics where mezmerizing for example take a track like sidewinder, matt sings from the perspective of snake truly amazing you have to hear to believe it. The wicked end is also brilliantly at one point theyre lyrics are dazzling-"toss the apple il savour each bite".strenght of the world is another lyrically wondeerfull clocking in a more than 9 minutes, good value for time. These are probably the 3 songs where a7x lyricall ability is really outlined. The othewr tracks are just as speciall but one thing that catches my ear so to say are the bridges in the tracks, they have this epic feel about them s if you where listening to power metal. for example in songs like burn it down, blinded inchains and sieze the day id have to say those 3 pose the best bridges ive ever listened to. So all in all they are a very misunderstood banf adn i feel the criticisms come from unjustly as these guys are truly gifted. My only concern would be the way their sound progresses over time its important they dont go to soft or they may slip off the metal cliff. Standout songs have to -Sieze the day
-the wicked end
-strenght of the world
-betrayed

| 3.0 good | HangEmHigh | July 19th 07 | City of Evil was a broad change from Avenged Sevenfold's second album, Waking the Fallen. Gone are the strong, demanding screams of M. Shadows, and in their place is a higher, raspy singing. To me his singing isn't horrible, I've heard worse. But its the combination with the background singing of Synyster and Zacky that seem to give his voice a horrible sound. The deeper screams contrasted the background vocals very nicely, but now it is all but too annoying. The guitars however are still top notch playing excellent solos and inspiring leads. But to me its all played too much in harmony on songs with a normal song structure such as Beast and the Harlot and Bat Country. When they do break the mold the harmonies sound great for they are not reminiscent if the other songs for example Sidewinder. The bass is audible and this a plus, but for some reason Johny Christ does not lay down as many nice fills that could be heard somewhat on Waking the Fallen but primarily on Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. Drums are excellent as plenty of fills and excellent double bass are employed by The Rev. This band has great potential its just a few poorly judged decisions and a few things that should have been capitalized on that could have made this album 10 times better.

| 3.5 great | farmertanman91 | July 14th 07 | I will admit that Shadow's vocals were rather weak, but the instrumentals are great. I don't think the riffs were drab at all, and the solos were well thought out and fitted the feel of each song. I especially enjoyed the acoustic ending of sidewinder, which i thought freshened up the album a little. The second half of the album definitely beats the first half, which all sounded rather similar. The second half has much more variety, including the song Strength of the World, which i liked because of its old-western feel. Overall, i thought it was a good album, my only complaints are that Shadow's vocals were unfortunately not up to par due to his surgery, and the iron-maiden-esque guitar harmonizing got a little dry at times.
