How a band can create such a strong album with such a simple formula is beyond me. Nowhere to be found is nifty songwriting, overtly symbolic lyrics, or intense technicality. What is found is a varied sound from track to track that keeps every song fresh, preventing any two from songs from running together. Dexter Holland's voice does a fine job of standing above the rest of the tunes with melodies that perfectly complement his voice, while Noodles' guitar combines with the rhythm section for a powerful punk backing. Smash offers everything, from balls-to-the-wall humor (Bad Habit), darker rock tracks (Gotta Get Away), heartfelt messages tinged with reggae (What Happened To You?), and a straight up punk anthem (Smash). Very few blemishes make Smash one of the best albums of the 1990s, and easily the best album of The Offspring's career.

Definitily my favorite Offspring album. And my first Offspring album. When I first got it, it didnt leave my cd player for months. And today I can still go back and listen to it, repeatedly. It has some of The Offsprings best stuff, excluding the stuff off their S/T album. I cant think of a weak song on this though. Killboy Powerhead is adictive and Self-Esteem is not a song that I should be driving my car too. This is my classic Offspring album and i'll refer it to anybody wanting to get into The Offspring.

Shocked by this rating? I bet. But the truth is, The Offspring are only at their best in small doses. There really is nothing wrong with any song on here but 45 minutes of this will really wear this dull. It will take everything great about them and turn it upside down. Dexter Holland's intense way of singing loses its intensity and the instrumentals become repetitive. Every song seems to have the same structure with the same tone and mood. Once again, great shuffle band but not a great extensive listening band.

Every band has their classic stand-out album and this is definatly Offspring's one. Not taking anything away from ixnay or ignition. This was my first offsrping album i bought and i still listen to it all the time.
