It seems there are two camps when it comes to Insomnium. There are the fans that think their best times started with the debut and stopped with Above the Weeping World. They appreciate the dark, emotive, side of the band. The other group is more into the albums that started with Across the Dark. They appreciate the more aggressive approach Insomnium started using on that release. Of course, the people that are mostly into this album fall into the latter fanbase, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t something here for both sides. It’s not a stretch to say Winter’s Gate is the pinnacle of Insomnium’s sound. I’m not trying to convince anyone it’s their best album, only that it’s the best blend of all their elements. It’s the best of their melodic death metal sound mixed with progressive tendencies, acoustic guitars, melancholic atmospheres, and even a few black metal-ish moments. The clean singing, too, finally works for the band in a way it never has in the past. Not a single wasted moment in the entire 40 minutes.

This is the closest to Crimson III we're probably ever going to get, so perk up, Edge of Sanity fans. Indeed, this Dan Swano-produced (!!!), 40-minute, single track progressive death metal album (sound familiar yet?) is actually pretty good. The production is great, there is lots of impressive guitarwork, and there are some wonderful melodic moments (the 'chorus' in part 2). It blurs together somewhat, though, as certain sections are less memorable than others, and I wish there was more experimentation within the massive song. This is pretty satisfying on the whole, though.

Never cared too much for Insomnium (or melodeath in general) but this was a hell of a great listening experience. rI've always scoffed at the great heights of their albums and passed them off as typical Finnish melodrama. But rhere there is a lot of intelligent restraint and admirable maturity. It's a 40 minute nonstop track but there's an rimmense amount of content that spans a lot of styles. It's really theatrical and dramatic death metal that's often rtimes staggeringly beautiful.r3.7

Despite failing to dethrone "Vessels" as the best album of the year within the genre, "Winter's Gate" is certainly one of the best 2016 releases. The overall atmosphere and interesting songwriting always manage to captivate the listener throughout the entire album. A must-have for any melodic death metal fan.

A spellbinding journey through gale-force melodeath with tasteful blackening, Winter's Gate ebbs and flows effortlessly between soaring clean vocals and acoustic passages and pummeling riffs that evoke the ferocity of a murderous ocean, or worse. Taken individually, each of these tracks is beautiful?as is par for the course with Insomnium; however, the whole is truly far greater than the sum of its parts here, as Winter's Gate contends with (and surpasses some of) the very best single-track concept albums in my entire collection.
