Outstanding return for Massive Attack. A nice balance between some of their newer ideas on stuff like Heligoland with faint resemblance of their early work. Hopefully this marks a new glorious return for MA.

Massive Attack return with another streamlined trip hop album. I prefer the dense sound of their earlier stuff.

Massive Attack came back in 2016 (new album when???) with Ritual Spirit, and it proved the band lost nothing of their magic. Moving from trip-hop (whaddasurprise) to more hip-hop territories, it mostly retains that urban vibe that the band always had in 'em. Also Tricky was back for this, which only adds to the record's dark atmosphere.

Regardless of how you felt about Massive Attack's output at the end of the 00's and on into 2010, the idea of new music from the world's biggest trip-hop group was still pretty tantalizing. Thankfully, Ritual Spirit delivers on that idea in great ways. Hearing the expansive, subtle downtempo electronic atmosphere with hushed rapping and vibrant tones this EP has in store harkens back to the days of old as well as that of their latest output. That's undoubtedly intentional, as Tricky collaborates with the group on closer "Take It There" to mark his first appearance on a Massive Attack record since Protection, but also allowing sounds to come in from projects like Heligoland as well. Overall, this is a really swell EP, but I can't escape the feeling it's just teasing something bigger and better. Hopefully that is the case.
