| 3.0 good | Slaytan | July 18th 07 | Ithyphallic is Nile's latest release, and a step down from much of ther previous material. That is not to say however, that the album was poorly written or recorded, it is just very repetitive. The album stays true to form in the respect that it is riddled with blast beats, dual vocal work, and Egyptian themes, but it sounds as though Nile as beginning to wear thin; the Egyptian themes that used to make their music so original and interesting is beginning to become boring and unispirational (or so it seems). The guitar work on the album is mediocre, the first time you hear the riffs, they're interesting, but they seem to be repeated throughout each song. The bass is inaudible throughout much of the album making rare appearances in such songs as Papyrus Containing the Spell to Preserve Its Possessor Against Attacks From He Who Is in the Water and the title track Ithyphallic. The drumming one of the bright spots on the album, and in many cases, saves the album from being unlistenable. The double bass work is well above average, and many of the drum fills are interesting and original. The vocals are about 50/50 between Karl and Dallas, and show no progression from previous albums; the vocals are still brutal, however, they're nothing different from their past albums. In short, the album is a step down from Nile's previous albums, but is worth a listen. Standout Tracks: What May Be Safely Written, PCtStPIPAAFHWiitW.

| 3.0 good | Kenneth E. Rathburn | January 29th 11 | Perhaps it's the wrong introductory album for the band. Maybe it's that I've never been a death metal enthusiast (though I've never held it in low regard either). But as it stands, Ithyphallic doesn't give any indication of taking the least bit of initiative. The technicality is certainly there but it's all too stale while the command is only scarcely present. Might satisfy the band's more dedicated fans, but it's hardly worth a mention and has next to no staying power.

| 2.0 poor | MTTS | July 13th 09 | boring, repetitive, and just sounding in many ways uninspired. But hey, once you do the Egyptian thing for so long I guess it's kind of hard to sound different, because change would involve losing the musical identity you have.

| 2.5 average | Dethtrasher | May 10th 09 | Nile is a brutal technical death metal band. And they release an album named ''Ithyphallic''. This word can roughly be translated to ''erected penis'', which means: Hard-on, boner, meat-cigar or whatever you want to call it. The album title is just as stupid as the music to be honest. This is simple standard tech-death with the lyrics as the only exception. You get your fair share of hyper-speeded riffs and drums plus an average growl performance. But, the biggest flaw in this album is the drumming. I have never heard a drummer that masturbates the snare drum this much. The insanely fast blast-beats are so fucking annoying that they ruin the entire album. There are a couple of cool riffs and solos but the over-use of unnecessarily fast drumming makes those moments rare. Ithyphallic still has a varied content tech-death but I highly recommend that you get any other Nile album than this one.

| 3.0 good | danielrego | May 1st 08 | Not a bad album by normal Death Metal standards, but easily their weakest release. With this album, Nile lost out majorly on their strongest asset over conventional death metal bands - the atmosphere. Gone is the chilling evilness that could be found on Black Seeds Of Vengeance and In Their Darkened Shrines, or the sheer fury of Annihilation Of The Wicked. In contrast, Ithyphallic just sounds like a parody of its own title - flaccid, weak and generally uninspiring. Though arguably their most impressive release in terms of technicality and instrumentation, it lacks the soul and vibe that Nile made their hallmark. Still stands up fairly well as a conventional Death Metal album though.
