It's funny, this album seems to get bashed by more of the people I speak to about music than any other. It's pre-fab, it's badly produced, it relies on shock value too much, it's dated badly, they can't play their instruments, the songs just aren't good. Or so I'm always told. I don't hear any of that, though. Believe me, I've listened to this record enough to have dug beneath any shock value, and even after all that, all I hear is a bunch of powerful, well-written rock'n'roll songs performed by a band that, even coming from 'false' origins, obviously believed in what they were doing. The only thing here I find to be bland is "Pretty Vacant". The rest, including the lesser known tracks (a couple of which are fantastic), still thrills me. Any idea of revolution or upheaval tied to this record is missing the point; Never Mind The Bollocks is the soundtrack to rebelling for absolutely no reason at all, raging against forces you don't understand and would never want to, all because you want to. And sometimes, that means more than the most political song ever could.

I simply don't understand what is so appealing about the Sex Pistols. Its awful retro grinding punk played by a bunch of dudes who don't understand the basics of playing their instruments. Musical talent? Who needs it! Songwriting ability? Why bother! The Sex Pistols crank out a bunch of punchy, fast-paced, inyourface songs with grating vocals and people go crazy over it. I simply don't get it. The only reason this garbage doesn't deserve a one is because of their effect on the punk movement and their message. I respect their message, respect the pushing forward of the genre, but they just make absolutely terrible music.

While I think the album has some level of importance, I think it is wildly over-rated. The Sex Pistols were important, especially to British punk, but they were quite late to the party. Even worse, they were as much about style as substance. As evidence, note that Glen Matlock played bass on the album, while Sid Vicious was trotted out as the bass player for public consumption. American punk was based upon traditional rock and roll; the Sex Pistols were based upon an uncontrollable need for attention. That gets in the way of the music.

While I understand its importance providing a soundtrack for GB's youth rebellion, it comes up a bit late to the picture in terms of directly shaping future music (like The Stooges or other early "punk" bands did). There are a handful of good and catchy songs on here, but others kind of feel like they just fade into the background as generic "punk riff with sloppily yelled lyrics" songs. 3.6/5

SMASH THE BUREAUCRACY, THE HYPOCRISY, AND THE XEROGRAPHY!rYes, in the track "Public Image" by his other band, Johnny Rotten explains that he gave the public "what they wanted" with the Sex Pistols, but that doesn't stop me from appreciating their cleverly calculated chaos on a musical level. Think of how many bands you listen to who have namedropped them and call me in the morning. And, um, excuse me but these guys ROCK LIKE EINSTEIN.

Liars. No Feelings. Problems. Submission. Pretty much sums up mid 1970s Britain. It needed a shock, politically, socially and musically, and the Sex Pistols, bringing a new genre (political punk) to the UK, dropped the bomb. Dealing with Communism on 'Holidays In The Sun', abortion on 'Bodies', political staleness on 'God Save The Queen' and a simply sinister sneer of impending violence on 'Anarchy In The U.K', the Pistols became the most hated and loved band in England, and set out a ripple effect of punk clones.

Its a straight up great album. The people who see it as just noise have no idea what the hell their talking about. This is one of the most important punk albums of all time. It was able to reach the top of the UK charts while offending tons of people and without being mainstream crap. The singles off of this album are great. This is legit punk along with The Clash and the hardcore of the 80's in the U.S., not the crappy whinny pop punk of today.

Screaming nasal vocals, minor guitar chords and anarchy. This record truly changed what everyone thought punk rock was, the damaged writhing sound of rock and roll screaming for more. Its speed, distortion and attitude not only changed the punk rock world, but also metal and hard rock. With bands as varied as Guns n Roses and The Fall citing it as an influence.
