Was DJ Shadow really a trip-hop artist? That's the question that seems to arise most when people look back on Endtroducing. Apparently trip-hop is a 'reductive term', or something - but then what term WOULDN'T be reductive describing this masterpiece? Woozy, dreamy melodies and gothic piano parts face off against some of the most brutally inventive drums in this or any genre. Tracks like "Stem/Long Stem" and "Building Steam With A Grain of Salt" seem to have absolutely no antecedant - all the more thrilling and disorientating when you consider that this album holds a place in the Guinness Book Of World Records as the first album ever created using nothing but samples. Neither hip-hop, electronica, or trip-hop can truly lay claim to this album - it stands alone in a league of its own.

DJ Shadow came with a different proposal in 1996 when he produced 'Endtroducing...'. Through the magic of samples, he blended music in a way many have tried to copy, yet no one yet matched. He mixed genres such as rock, soul, funk, ambient, and jazz, into a final product that transcends time. If you need further proof of that, think how long it's been since this album came out (1996) as you are reading this, sit back, listen to it and be amazed, as so many have been amazed to this day.

A stunning album in both concept and execution, it simply needs to be heard. Comprised entirely of vinyl samples, DJ Shadow should be praised for his hoarding and compiling skills before music is even mentioned. Oh and the music is spine-tingling, of course.

With this album Shadow took a lifetime of compiling and listening to a diverse array of music from a varied selection of genres and breaking these pieces down to construct new compositions, creating his masterpiece 'Endtroducing...'. Perfect for listening alone or to set a mellow mood the music is like something you've heard before (which quite often it can be) but can't quite put your finger on where or when and even whilst throwing so many styles together Shadow manages keeps his work subtle and compelling and keeps the listener in awe.
As I said before this album is perfect for listening alone, whether you want to switch your mind off or switch it on.

Although Portishead started the trip-hop movement with 1994's Dummy, Endtroducing... solidified the genre, and made it one of the most important genres of the 90's. Shadow took samples from music of all eras and types, and combined it into an ethereal moody form of music never heard before. This is a must own album for anyone who is serious about music, and an essential part of any collection.

Never in music history has the phrase "more than the sum of its parts" been more applicable than with DJ Shadow's legendary
debut. The first album ever to be made entirely from samples, Shadow has taken bits and pieces from every corner of the record
store, and somehow managed to piece them together like Lego pieces to form one of the most beautiful records to come out of the
'90's.
Trip-hop has other classics, but neither the genre, nor modern music in general, has ever managed to produced an album that was
a work of art for more than simply the sounds it made.

The beautiful and rich soundscapes this man is capable of doing is nearly unfathomable. DJ Shadow has been around for ages, telling nearly endless mind boggling tales, all within the sights of obscure samples, amazing drum breaks, and yummy beats.

Despite only using samples, Shadow has crafted an incredibly deep, detailed and sophisticated melange of horror-movie piano, slithering guitar and those oh-so-perfect drum breaks. If I may utilize an old cliche, it works best listened to as a whole, the tracks segueing into each other perfectly, from the flying breakbeats and organ of 'The Number Song' to the poignant, beautiful 'Midnight in a Perfect World'. If that wasn't enough, you get plenty of leavening humor (mostly stemming from the interludes) and some great vocal samples thrown into the mix. Shadow would never better this - but then, neither has anyone else since.

Endtroducing is one of the few I would consider a Classic. With the sampling mastermind, DJ Shadow, this LP is perfect. The full force of the jams uncover so much creativity to engulf you in the laid back,and emotional revolting feel you can retain. A perfect album, and one of the few in my opinion that would be considered one.

DJ Shadow is a painfully talented at what he does. The turntable wizard has a certain innate skill with music. For him, there is no sample too strange or too outlandish, it somehow all fits. Endtroducing... is a testament to this skill, and is such a cohesive and simply perfect piece of work that I was shocked that it was created from samples of other music. The atmosphere he creates is never broken, and as I said earlier, everything simply works. Endtroducing... is simply one of the greatest albums of the '90s.

Ah, DJ Shadow! This man is a legend, although he has only released a handful of albums in the more than 10 years that he's been doing music now. Why he is a legend is simply because of this album, probably the greatest ever made in the genre of instrumental hiphop/triphop, although it's far more than that. Shadow samples everything from rock to jazz to any other genre that has been released on vinyl on this album, which also makes it a very diverse album, although never losing that typical feeling. Absolute highlights are"Midnight in a Perfect World" and "Stem/Long Stem".
