DJ Shadow
Trip Hop, Electronica, Hip-Hop

DJ Shadow, aka Josh Davis of California, is best known for 1996's Endtroducing, seen by many as one of the defining albums of the 1990s. Along with Massive Attack's Mezzanine, it is frequently cited as one of the best albums within the hip-hop genre, in spite of the fact that it is subtly different from many other albums within that genre. Endtroducing was also the first album ever to consist entirely of samples from other records, ensuring for itself a place in history. His other solo albums include Preemptive Strike, a compilation released in 1998 of his career up to that point, and The Private Press, his second full length album. DJ Shadow was also the key force behind UNKLE's Psyence Fiction, which featured appearances by luminaries including Thom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft and Mike D of The Beastie Boys. Other collaborations include those with Blackalicious and former Rage Against The Machine frontman Zack De La Rocha. His third full length album, The Outsider came out in September 2006 to mixed reactions from fans and critics alike. The album took a lot of its sound from the new "Hyphy" movement, and is said to take a more hip hop approach with daunting genre jumping, a departure from the ambient, sample based music that made him famous. « hide
