The most underrated DT album, mostly because of the clean vocals of Stanne and the experimental sound, without so many great riffs....My favorite songs are "Freecard", Therein", "Auctioned" and "On your time"....

Despite the obvious departure from their previous outings, Dark Tranquillity still offers up their classic melo-death sound with Projector. By this point in the band's career it is only natural to try and start experimenting...the result was this album. Stanne's vocal versatility reminds me of Akerfelts, and the added keyboard sections here make this album flow nicely. Definitely an underrated DT album, this would actually be a good place to start for beginnings looking to check these guys out.

Something of an awkward moment in Dark Tranquillity's catalog, Projector takes the direction of its predecessor and double-dips into the melodic end of melodic death metal. The results are essentially a rawer, undercooked version of a style they'd damn-near perfect by the time Fiction released. In a sense, it's interesting to see how the cycle played out because (or in spite) of Projector and its divisive turns, but taken for what it is, I find this page in the Dark Tranquillity book to be a little too messy, be it from age or the water and coffee stains.

This is very easy listening. A lot of clean vocals on this, but they are pitched deeper (Matthew Barlow-esque). There is still a good mix of harsher singing. There is also plenty of use of piano and keyboard - but this just adds a dimension - the melodic distorted guitars still dominate proceedings. The opening track 'freecard' is a good track to sample if you're in doubt. It opens with piano, before you get blasted out of your seat with a brilliant DT guitar hook and Mikael Stanne's growl. The middle section has an atmospheric interlude with simulated plucked violins before launching back into the principal riff. The song ends with a taste of Mikael's clean vocals. This is a very consistent album and if you like the opener, you'll probably enjoy the whole album. I like all the tracks on this with the possible exception of the balladic experimental 'day to end.' Highlights include the melodic 'auctioned' and the high-speed riffing of 'the sun fired blanks.'
