This album is one of the best I've heard in the last 20 years. It's both heavy and melodic as hell. Clearly these guys are trying to write good songs -- not trying to show off their technical prowess. That said, they've got skills nonetheless. Everything is tight, the guitar work is superb, and the drumming is spectacular. It's nice to hear a drummer who knows when to use double bass and when not to. His drumming can best be described as atmospheric -- it adds to the music istead of just creating the monotonous jackhammer pounding that is the standard for most metal drummers. And don't worry if you don't like cookie monster vocals (I don't), these guys place the vocals a bit further back in the mix so they aren't so in your face. I find myself actually enjoying the "singing" on this album since the vocals just blend into the overall atmosphere. And that's really what this album is all about . . . atmosphere. Insomnium can create a mood better than most, and they fully develop each of their songs before bringing them to an epic climax. It doesn't get any better than this.

Few bands covey such emotion that u get wrapped in the music, this is one of them albums, this album isnt just music, but it takes u on a journey filled with intense emotion, one of the best melodeath albums in the 21st century, if not the best

It's too bad they made the same album three times -- it was amazing the first, just good the second, but boring the third. Here's hoping they like, write some new riffs for the fourth, or it's going to suck harder than a gay guy in Greece.

Probably the most emotional alubum within it's genre and is also, in my opinion, Insomnium's best album. It's intense and beautiful, combining doom metal with Finnish melodic death metal perfectly.

There's always a line in the sand between the Davids and Goliaths of the world. It's a fact that has been set in stone for many millenia to come unfortunately but on a rare occasion a Goliath can become a David. Such is the case with Insomnium, their songwriting, as proved by their sophomore effort, was lackluster and boring at best. However Above The Weeping World took not just one brave step forward but about hundred. The songwriting on this album is nothing short of superb. There are rarely moments when the album gets dull, it just simply flows from one beautiful moment to the next. While it may not be accessible as Across The Dark, this time the effort is worth taking as the melodies encased within the shell are near perfect in some places (see Mortal Share and The Killjoy). Insomnium were once called "a poor man's Opeth." Heh, yeah right.
