I really didn't hear anything I didn't like on this album. Elliott Smith had a very unique instrumental and vocal style, and this album is just full of great, strong tracks.

well elliott is a perfect example of an artist that has so many amazing albums and the first one that i listen to becomes my favorite, even if the others are just as good or better. while "xo" and "either/or" are equally amazing, i just became attached to this album. Not only are the lyrics and his voice on this album so chilling, his guitar work is just beautiful. he is just a brilliant songwriter and this album, pretty much featuring just him and his acoustic, showcases his songwriting ability better than his others. if this album doesn't evoke any emotions in you, it is safe to say you are a robot.

Criminally overshadowed by Either/Or and XO, Elliott's self titled album is his darkest, most gripping album. How this man wrote so many beautifully depressing (yea) songs in a row without seeming repetitive or cliche is astounding. Some people could argue that the wizzy studio shit that Smith tried after makes for more interesting music, but none of those records capture me the way that this one does. "Needle in the Hay" is Elliott's best opener, "St. Ides Heaven" and "Christian Brothers" are both gorgeous, yet lyrically painful tunes and "Coming Up Roses" is one of the best mellow folk-pop songs ever recorded. This album captures everything melancholic perfectly, without ever getting tedious or feeling irrelevant, every fucking song on here is great. It's so light, soft and repressed, so many people might call it boring and move on (like I originally did) but with time I fell in love with each and every song on here, and how Smith brought it all together into his crowning achievement. This album is the definition of classic.

Just what I expected as well as wanted from early Elliott. It displays an unrefined quality that makes it all the more relatable, which sadly worms its way out of Elliott's later work (on the up side, it's in exchange for many greater nuances unstated here). As always, each and every song is amazing lyrically as well as musically. Elliott smith is truly, as the meme goes, "A GEEEEEEEEEEEENIUS!!!!!". 4.32/5

A few years back, I was getting heavily into metal, but my friends brother had a diverse music collection and had this album in his collection. I put on "Christian Brothers" and right away I'm blown away. This guy can pull off a simple, acoustic sound with high pitched vocals. Such emotion and passion is displayed throughout making this a quality listen. My favorite Elliott Smith album to date, this will always have a place in my heart.

Elliott at his best, he can make me cry with any of these songs, just listen to Christian Brothers or St. Ides Heaven and you'll understand me. This album is seen as very depressing, containing maybe just one 'happy song', which is definitely still Smith's trademark. This is what I call a solo-album, since every instrument is played by himself, drums, harmonica, bass, piano, and of course his guitar. Elliott sings with such a beautiful voice and so emotionally. A special thing about the album is that it's all recorded with a fourtracker at his home. This is one of the best albums of the 90s.
