Elliott Smith

Elliott Smith is arguably the best solo Acoustic Alternative artist of the last 10 years. What separates Elliott from his peers (Damien Rice, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake etc) is his extremely obvious Beatles and Beach Boys influence.

Elliott Smith is arguably the best solo Acoustic Alternative artist of the last 10 years. What separates Elliott from his peers (Damien Rice, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake etc) is his extremely obvious Beatles and Beach Boys influence.

Starting out with making quiet, contemplative songs mainly with just an acoustic guitar (which he played with formidable skill), releases like XO, and Figure 8 had more baroque influences, and featured a full band. Still, his introspective lyrics, and sweet, often double-tracked voice remained the core of his work throughout his music career. He slowly, but surely became recognized as the 90s progressed, gaining a dedicated fan base, and
some mainstream attention.

Unfortunately, Elliott was found dead in 2003, from self inflicted stab wounds. In the first few years of the 21st century, Smith's problems had been getting noticed. At concerts, he'd have trouble remembering lyrics and guitar chords for his own songs, and when talking to the audience he would often ramble and leave sentences unfinished. In an interview done a bit before his death, he claimed to have been going under various treatments for drug and alcohol abuse. Though it was mostly his new material (from the album left unfinished by Smith, who had been working on it since 2001, and released post-humously, From A Basement On The Hill) that contained references to drugs and suicide, some of Smith's past songs had also dealt with the subject. « hide
