| 3.5 great | John Legendary User Hanson STAFF | September 9th 06 | Amputechture is both TMV's most all-around solid work, et it isn't their best. The album itself contains a huge amount of highlights and melds the breakout-pace and style of De-Loused with the vastness and musicianship or Frances, all while taking it a step further in terms of songwriting. However, it isn't anything truly new, and despite the fact that "Tetragrammaton" and "Day of the Baphomets" are two of the finest songs I've heard all year, the album is just a tad bit too long for its own good.

| 2.0 poor | Jeremy Price | September 16th 06 | Amputechture may well be prog rock at its worst: overly pretentious, incomprehiensible, bland, irritating; the list goes on and on. On an album where half the songs are dry ballads, and the other half are 10+ plus minute epics filled with pointless mastrubatory guitar noodling, Amputechture dissapoints on many levels for me.

| 4.5 superb | Adrien Muise | September 9th 06 | The Mars Volta has already put together a classic catalog of albums in their very young career. With the release of Amputechure, they have added another solid piece of work. Omar gave up some of the guitar duties to John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chile Peppers, and a seasoned veteran of the music game comes through for The Mars Volta in a big way. The guitar solos may be stronger here then ever before, and the dueling between Omar and Cedric at the instrument is again spot on. The horn use on this album is easily and unquestionablely their best work yet. Finally the trumpets are allowed to come in to their own, and really add to the overall feel of the album. Keys, percussion, and the preciously mentioned horns add even more of a Latin feel then in past work, and even Omar?s guitar work seems more Latin inspired then ever before. The vocals are very Mars Volta, with Cedric?s amazing vocal range spewing out more classic lines that fans have came to expect and enjoy. The time signatures are more comparable to that of their debut album De-Loused In The Comatorium, but song structure (although shorter) are much more like their follow up, Frances The Mute. Instant fan favorites such as Vermicide and Tetragrammaton are going to be enjoyed for years to come. Not their best work, but very close, highly recommend this album to any music fan.

| 3.5 great | Joe Costa | September 9th 06 | So Amputechture. Its probably been the most anticipated release of the year for not only me, but many others. Following in the footsteps of the sprawling epic, 2005's Frances the Mute, Amputechture really finds the band at a crossroad in terms of where to take their sound to keep it fresh. They do a relatively good job adding bits of variety into their sound (see the flamenco guitar driven spanish ballad of "Asilos Magdelena"). While still trying to go for an epic feel, something Frances excelled at, they discard almost all ambience on this album in favor of just an instrumental wankfest. At times, it works brilliantly (see "Day of the Baphomets" for probably the best TMV song ever), while at others, it just feels tired and like they are rehashing old ground ("Meccamputechture"). All in all, Amputechture contains some of The Mars Volta's finest cuts and is all around an amazing album. But when some parts of an album are that good, the flaws of it seem just that much more apparent.

| 4.0 excellent | Staker | December 17th 10 | Some fantastic epics on here. Furious drumming, the usual crazy experimental sections (Meccaputecture, I'm looking at your saxaphone solo), wonderful lyrics - but sadly, 3 of the tracks (1, 5 and 8) are a bit meh. All the others, yes please.

| 4.5 superb | Gastón P. Ro'o | February 5th 08 | This album is excellent, it's not accessible to everyone, The Mars volta's experimentation takes different directions on each album, this album is their most complex, jazzy album to my opinion, I really really like it, but it's not my favorite the mars volta album... Listen to "Day of The Baphomets"

| 0.0 | La Revolucion | September 9th 06 | It's not as epic or complicated as Frances The Mute. It's not quite as upbeat and exciting as Deloused. It's basically just OK, with a few obvious highlights.

| 2.0 poor | Jack Mancuso | April 24th 13 | Nothing on here ever comes across as "bad", but it doesn't make a lasting impression either. It basically passes through one ear and goes out the other. If forced to describe the album in one word, I would choose "unimpressive".

| 3.5 great | Travis Montgomery | January 29th 13 | Yeah, I don't know where the hate for this is coming, in the end it probably stems from the fact that it's the exact middle of the road between Deloused in the Comatorium and Frances the Mute. Neither is it the fresh, post-hardcore heavy debut of the former nor is it the experimental smorgasbord of the latter; however, that doesn't mean that it should be treated as an unwanted bastard child. If you were to ask me I'd recommend Deloused -> This -> Frances for the beginner seeing as for many listeners Frances can be a bit jarring. 3.5/5

| 3.0 good | jday | July 31st 12 | The Mars Volta really know how to party, but it's too bad the don't know when to go home. The songs are great, but when most of the songs end after the first 4-5 minutes, but go on long trippy instrumentals for another 5-10, they start to overstay their welcome.
Bump |
| 3.5 great | Activista anti-MTV | March 6th 12 | The Mars Volta expanded their musical repertoire. How did this happen? With continued experimentation, but more precisely, I think, by admonishing artistic direction to the sessions musicians. Amputechture represents a significant epoche for the Mars Volta as the band moves out of the musical wilderness, away from kitsch of At the Drive-In and earlier TMV, into the territory of other progressive rock outfits, even surpassing progressive rock giants, like Rush, in creativity and popularity. Is the Mars Volta this generation's Pink Floyd?

| 4.5 superb | M.S. Nielsen | February 20th 11 | This might be The Mars Volta's most demanding release yet but once all its excessiveness and eccentricity has wrapped itself around one's mind, the album can be appreciated in all its ambience. Also this has one of Cedric's career best performances in Viscera Eyes.

| 4.5 superb | Tom Eccles | December 19th 10 | This album really took it's time to fully grow on me, but slowly it did and has now become one of my favourite albums by The Mars Volta.
Bump |
| 3.0 good | Brien C. Stevenson | August 11th 10 | In the bands seemingly hellbent desire to remain as musically diverse as possible, The Mars Volta have started to become almost redundant in their style. It feels like the band got everything they need to say (musically) on their first record, then restated it on the second. With Amputechture, there is a sense of chaos (more than usual for this band) that comes off pretty messy and sporadic then previous efforts.

| 5.0 classic | quicksand89 | November 12th 09 | Very underrated album. The album takes you on a journey just like the previous two albums, but without a storyline or theme to it. The result is their most experimental and "jazz" album to date. Must be listened to several times to understand.

| 3.0 good | TheBumbino | February 23rd 09 | Overall it's not bad a few songs turn out to be really repetitive or just plain annoying but i must say "Days of the Baphomets" is one of The Mars Volta's best songs
But by far from terrible i prefer it over Frances the Mute just because its not drowned out in ambience so much

| 4.0 excellent | Cndcnc | August 28th 08 | The most underrated of Volta's albums. The thing I like about this album is although it's very self-indulgent and overly complex (two things that never really mattered to me) it's way more "fun" than their two earlier releases. De-Loused and Frances the Mute were incredibly somber albums. Amputecture has a much more adventurous, bombastic, soulful, and purposely over the top feel. My favorite tracks are Tetragrammaton, Viscera Eyes and Day of the Baphomets.
Bump |
| 3.5 great | Harrison Muecke | October 15th 07 | There isnt as much to say about this album as there was about the two predecessors. The first four songs are quite strong and have taken a more "precision first" and an almost jazzy influence. Asilos Magdalena is the middle eastern string arrangement that makes me skip it everytime, except i have to give it credit for the good lyrics that it contained. Then is Viscera Eyes, the more radio friendly song from their At-The Drive In days which is great, but doesnt offer as much growth as the rest of The Mars Volta's work. Next, Day of the Baphomets tops the list on the level of experimentation, and it seems to switch time signatures the most out of all. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, but it is just simply put, “a grower” and isn’t easy to get into at first. Lastly, El Ciervo Vulnerado is a little repetetive at times, without the same flare as Vicarious Atonement, but still is a powerful track and is a good ending to Amputechture. Even though a slight drop in performance for Omar and Cendric, it is still an overall great album, and is a must for any Mars Volta fans or prog rockers.

| 2.0 poor | matt4 | March 17th 07 | I guess you could say I haven't given this album enough of a chance, but I loved both the other albums at first listen (and even more so every listen after that). This album was decent-at-best the first time through, and every other time it gets worse. This review has made me want to try one more time, but all in all: it's definitely not up to par with previous TMV releases.

| 4.0 excellent | John Towler | March 17th 07 | After having the album since just before it's release and given it time to sink in and have many listens over time I've concluded that it's a great album. I think that all the tracks on the album are overall at least worthy of 4/5 ratings, shortcomings being possible uninteresting sections in the huge tracks, but given the length of the music, the good far more than outweighs the bad. And direction and focus being lacking is one of TMV's traits, which might be nice to see reigned in a bit for the next release, but it's also one of the reasons why I like them so much. Two tracks disappoint, namely, El Ciervo Vulnerado, which I find to be very boring, unlike it's sister-track Vicarious Atonement which has far superior melodies and textures to back up the slow ambient style of the track. The other letdown for me was Asilos Magdalena which I think they could have made into a much better track than it ended up being. It's too long for what it is, and... the song simply dosn't gel with me. I can listen to it, but I don't enjoy it all that much. So 6/8 ain't bad, right? Thats 3/4 of the album I consider to be excellent. It's not TMV's opus, but it's an excellent album that sits well in their catalogue, I can't wait to see what comes next!

| 4.0 excellent | diegogdo | November 24th 06 | This album it`s definetly the last evolutive step in the mars volta creative carrer, since a safe-experimental De-Loused to a more experimental Frances. The content, except for a few tracks like Viscera Eyes or The Day of the Baphomets is more smooth and quiet but still very creative. Overall it has less excited parts but more sophiesticated than in previous records.
Bump |
| 4.0 excellent | thrash_fanatic | October 27th 06 | a very detailed review and a bit complicated, but I agree with what is being said. My only annoyance with what is otherwise a perfect album is how the band seem to use certain sections of their songs as jam sessions, that's basically what it sounds like anyway. Frusciante's playing seem s a bit OTT at times as well. Bah what the hell it's a great album.....
Bump |
| 4.0 excellent | whatduffhuck7 | September 24th 06 | no real ballads on here like televators. and no great orchrastra (sp?) work like frances has. but not as atmospheric at frances either, which is a good thing. lots of people dont like the acoustic/spanish song on this album but i love it. not like omar to use a acoustic. ussually massivily effected electric guitar. as expected the vocals stand out. also the rumor about the RHCP guitarist palying the guitar on this album is completely false. yes he does play on here. most of it actually, but omar does the lead's. which is what he is known for anyways so not a big deal.
Bump |
| 4.0 excellent | Tojes Dolan | September 17th 06 | I say for now it's great, but I don't know. It lacks the energy and power of particular moments of Frances, like Cygnus or L'via... And it's very far away from the lyrical complexity of Deloused, and the energy in Drunkship of Lanterns.
Nonetheless, it flows greatly, I like the mellower tone they're getting, and they are certainly working in the lack of punctual attention of the past albums, in my opinion.

| 3.5 great | 5thEye | September 14th 06 | Better than FtM, which was pretentious and sometimes boring, and not as good as DitC, which was stellar. It's probably worthy of a buy at some point. The faster, heavier tracks are quite good, but the quieter ambient/acoustic ones put me off.
Bump |
| 4.5 superb | amoney | September 13th 06 | I was initially disappointed with this album, expecting the high intensity musical climaxes that frequented Frances the Mute, but the more I listen to it, the more it has grown on me. Listening to an album with expectations probably isn't fair to the artist. In terms of musicianship, the band's playing is at its best. At the same time, however, there are parts of the album that drag on and become tedious. It's still Volta, though, and is a great album.
