One of the most misunderstood metal bands ever, especially in that they're NOT METAL! They came to a similar conclusion as Black Sabbath from the perspective of a punk band. There's an almost Captain Beefheart vibe in how the songs are arranged: twisted, expressionistic little "scenes" with no regard for coherency. Seedy middle america delinquency.

Melvins Ozma era were punk, dark, and sludgy. An improvement of Gluey Porch Treatments, but not as focused sounding as Bull Head. Ozma gets more spin time for me for some reason.

Ozma was a pretty significant step up from Gluey Porch Treatments, and it remains one of the Melvins finest records. It would still be a couple of years before the Melvins really started to go outside the box, so there aren't alot of surprises on here. This is just really slow, sludgy, punk-metal hybrid songs, but the quality is much stronger than on their debut. Buzz had started to write passages that resembled actual songs, and there are a few memorable ones on here. Dale Crover's drumming might be the highlight on Ozma, as his unique style helps to carry the tracks, and helps to give this record a whole lot of personality. While many of the songs sound very similar, and many are too short to really develop, the Melvins make this strange and sludgy music sound about as good and original as it can be. Best tracks are Cile, Oven, At a Crawl, Raise a Paw, Revulsion and Love Thing.

Imagine a gang of zombies marching into the mindfields, and the moment they make their way out of there, the horde unexpectedly encounters an eccentric badass in all his glory. This is a scene that came to mind as I was listening to Ozma, a record capable of making its pursuers mad with power and avarice once everything else settles down around them. King Buzzo's vocals are the uzis, the guitar playing represents roaring waters, and the percussion's presence is startling like a jackhammer. Applying sludge metal-esque riffs to a grunge atmosphere with a punk disposition may not be totally unheard of, but damn is it a thrilling event.
