Melvins

Melvins are a metal band from Aberdeen, Washington, the same city Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic grew up in. They are one of the most influential metal groups of the last three decades. Founder/singer/guitarist Buzz Osbourne AKA King Buzzo worked at a grocery store with another clerk by the name of Melvin who was widely despised by his co-workers. Founder/singer/guitarist Buzz Osbourne AKA King Buzzo worked at a grocery store with another clerk by the name of Melvin who was widely despised by his co-workers. The band members found his name to be an appropriate band name.

Melvins influences include early punk acts such as The Stooges, Black Flag, and the Sex Pistols and also slow rock acts like Flipper and Swans. Melvins play extremely heavy, slow, and sludgy Black Sabbath style-metal that features the superb drumming of the only other constant member of the band, Dale Crover. Melvins are also well-known for their experimentation and unique take on creating music. The band has had a revolving series of bassists over the years, most notably Lori "Lorax" Black and Matt Lukin who later formed Mudhoney. In 2006, Jared Warren and Coady Willis of Big Business permanently joined the band, giving the band a unique roster with two drummers. The dual-drummer concept has since become a celebrated aspect of the band, especially at live shows.

Though Melvins have mostly only garnered a cult following, they have influenced a large number of important rock and metal bands over the years, such as Neurosis, Eyehategod, ISIS, Tool, Mastodon, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Kyuss, Boris (who took their name from a Melvins song), and Green River. « hide
