Beck - Odelay!

1. Devil's Haircut -
A tightly produced Rock song with the help of a couple of samples and Beck's poetic lyrics that almost never make any sense throughout the whole album. This song starts the album off fresh and energetic. And the song ends with near "hazardous to your hearing" guitar feedback, while Beck Yells out "Devil's Haircut, in my mind!!!" 4.5/5
2. Hotwax -
This Bluesy/groovy masterpiece is loaded with samples and odd instruments. The chorus is in spanish (Yo soy un disco quebrado, yo tengo chicle en mi cerebro = I am a broken disc, I have bubble gum on my brain) reminiscent of the song "Loser" off
Mellow Gold. I love the accordian after the first chorus. Beck adds a sweet hip-hoppish ending that slowly fades away at the end. This is definitely one of my favorite songs off this album. 5/5
3. Lord Only Knows -
This is a great song to listen to when you're having a beer with your dad. Just watch out for the screaming intro... ;) it can get you by surprise. Beck shows he could handle an electric guitar and slide guitar nicely on this song. It sounds like something out of a time warp. This is probably the least weirdest song on the album even though Beck ends off the song singing..."Going back to Houston, Do the Hot-Dog dance. Going back to Houston, to get me some pants." 4.5/5
4. The New Pollution -
One of the most popular songs. I find it a bit overrated though. Starts off with An intro that sounds like it belongs in a Disney animation. The repetitive bass sounds like a remake of The Beatles "Tax Man." There's a nice saxophone in here as well after, yet, another catchy chorus from Beck. 4.5/5
5. Derelict -
An "overly Percussive" song. Most people like this song the least from this album, But I enjoy it. It includes almost nothing but percussive instruments and maybe even some silverware?
In the middle of the song you will also hear a bit of Sitar playing over a neat effect. 4/5
6. Novacane -
One of my all time favorite Beck songs, this one is talking about Novacaine powered androids(...whats that? Weird you say?) It contains a Folk guitar intro over a strong bassline, more Hip-hop beats, powerful Guitar Distortion, Techno influenced effects, and a little bit of funk. All I have to say is this song is one of a kind. 5/5
7. Jack-ass -
A real mellow folk song. This is a beauty that calms you down a bit after just having the sh
it scared out of you by "Novacane". Beck has a nice Harmonica solo before you get another weird, yet, memorable ending with the loud sounds of a donkey. 4/5
8. Where It's At? -
Probably the most popular song on the album. "..I got two turntables and a microphone.." It features a jazzy saxophone solo, Beck's rapping, a utopia of hip-hop and strange samples, a Chorus with purposely done microphone feedback, and more of Beck's distorted yelling. It's one big "Picasso" of a song. Only Mr. Bungle could do better. :cool: 5/5
9. Minus -
A punk song that is a big change of mood after "Where It's At?" The hyped up drumming and strong bassline reminds me of The Jesus Lizard. There's also a pause in between and everything slows down until it comes back up full speed with Beck getting louder. then the song ends with noise. 4/5
10. Sissyneck -
This song reminds me of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Another one of those "hang out with your dad and get drunk to" songs. It might be a little repetitive but still, it doesn't spoil this song at all. "..Dont talk to me if you're looking for somebody to cry on." 4.5/5
11. Readymade -
I don't know what to say about this song. I like this song, and still it is very repetitive. One drum sample plays throughout the song from start to finish. while Beck adds bits of other things in it too. Not a highlight of the album though but it's a descent song. 3.5/5
12. High 5 (Rock The Catskills) -
This is a Hip-Hop track with Beck showing us he can rap with the best of them. ..well, almost. his distorted voice flows along beats and a nice bassline that would sound sweet when you're driving in your car. It's also very humorous when Beck asks near the end "...Do You like Designer Jeans? Say Oo-lala!" 4/5
13. Ramshackle -
A nice mellow closing song (with no more Hip-hop samples) that takes you back to the sounds of
Mellow Gold. Beck's acoustic guitar sounds really nice here. It's a good song to just relax on your own. But before you get comfortable there's some weird bonus noise that if you're not prepared for it it can be a little shocking. 4.5/5

This is one of my all-time favorite albums.
If you haven't heard anything by Beck, I recommend you pick up this album first. :thumb:
