In words, this innovated the genre of metalcore. Metalcore; all core, was made up by the much-disliked screaming. I, unlike some metal-enthusiasts, enjoy and occasional scream, as featured in this album, despite the beneficial accident (I use beneficial because it made this album possible) which destroyed lead singer M. Shadows ability to scream. A blood vessel burst in his throat, ending the screaming featured in Waking the Fallen and Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, the other two A7X albums. If you have an open mind and enjoyed old A7X, you should love this album. I know I enjoyed it a lot. Now, M. Shadows sounds a lot less nu-metal, and creates a generous throwback to old 80's metal. Avenged Sevenfold looks much older now; just look at the music videos on their website. You can really tell A7X has matured as a band.

M. Shadows - Lead Vox
Synyster Gates - Lead Guitar
Vengeance - Rhythem Guitar
Johnny Christ - Bass
The Reverand - Drums

TRACK BY TRACK

Beast and the Harlot - A very nice metal sound, with a sweet chorus with an interestingly-placed F-Chord. This is the first song A7X let us sample with enjoyment. 9/10

Burn It Down - Call me biased, but I love this song. Watch the music video, please, please, on the A7X website. You will fall in love with the crazy thick metal sound. I love the cool head-banger part where he plays a rhythmic chords again and again. 9/10

Blinded in Chains - A little messy, I wouldn't have placed this song higher in the lineup before Bat Country. Certainly not the best song on the album. I didn't like it at all. 7/10

Bat Country - certainly makes me want to "make a beast of myself". A very fun enjoyable song with a cool 12-6-0 riff in the verse and beginning. This was my second favorite track of the album. 10/10

Trashed and Scattered - I didn't enjoy this as much as some of my friends did. It had some killer riffs, and was even enjoyable to listen to for a while, but lost flavor as it went along. 7/10

Seize the Day - Oh gosh, this is an awesome power symphony. I loved this song, and it gave good credit to A7X's GnR roots here. 9/10

Sidewinder - Sidewinder had an awesome riff to it. It had an incredible speedy metal riff. But I couldn't stand the vocals. It had cool lyrics about snakes killing people, of course that's awesome, but comon, the whining makes me want to kill people.8/10

The Wicked End - My favorite track on the album. My favorite track on any A7X album. Ever. This song has an awesome breakdown, cool vocals, and a very creepily cool classical-music part with a cello and violin or something. It destroyed all other songs on this album besides Bat Country. Most will disagree; ignore them. 10/10

Strength of the World - Great acoustic intro, cool riffs too. I like the solid beginning which made me expect too much of the rest. I didn't like the chorus of "strength of the world!". It goes from multi-person shouting to whiney M. Shadows going "ish on my shouldersshh", which gets annoying. Stupid shadows. I did enjoy the "It's over; she's finished" part, which made up for Shadow's annoying voice in the chorus. 8/10

Betrayed - Incredible intro, which I am planning to released tabbed very soon. However, the song itself (verse, etc.) was starting to slow down towards the end of the album. But it was still and O.K. song, and had a beautiful Anthrax-shoutout intro. 8/10

MIA - A beautiful song about war. I felt actually sad towards the end, not just because I was finishing the masterpiece album too. Great solo. 8.5/10

Well, that's the entire album. I hope you guys enjoyed my review. Thanks.

Eh, no? I am not whoever said that?

I looked at the other reviews, and they didn't outline what was and wasn't good about the tracks. Occasionally they'd say, "Awesome song!" or "didn't like it. Boring.".

It did innovate metalcore, as I said, because it isn't another metalcore screamfest.

EDIT: But, I'm not going to argue with you, Iai. Gotta love that Marshal Mathers LP on your favorites list. That explained it all. This Message Edited On 07.08.05

alright this album kicked major ass and atticus almost didn't give it enough credit strength of the world is one of my favorite songs because of the sad almost old western beginnings and then it just rips into and awesome riff not to mention the chorus which used shadows vocals in an eerie sort of way. nice job though.

What I quoted alone, is wrong on so many levels. I don't even know where to begin.

Are you saying that most core genres DONT scream then, Buddy?

Why are you saying this review is silly?

Wait a second, I didn't give it enough credit? Yeah I did, I loved this album and I've been listening to it every day for weeks. It's incredible.

Ouch... Having a blood vessel burst in your throat does not sound like fun.

I think the album sounds like crap. I hate shadows' voice when he isn't screaming. it's like weird, 80s-ish A7X without the punch that their old stuff packed. Granted the only old songs of theirs I listened to for the most part were Radiant Eclipse and Chapter 4.

Oh, and this isn't metal anymore. It's 80's glam-'metal'. Metal pretty much REQUIRES screaming, or really thick, raspy vocals and hard, heavy riffs. Because they moved away from the In Flames style riffing AND screaming, I don't think it even counts as metal anymore. They totally pulled an 18 Visions - Go from a cool hardcore metal band into a boring rock act that just plays power chords and has really ridiculously bad vocals.

Ahahaha, by the way. I love how all the top 15 reviewers tend to jump the hell out of all the people who they disagree with. And never find the time to justify their disagreements. This is a good review. The guy has an opinion, and you morons are outright telling him he's an idiot. Grow up, you juvenile idiots, and criticize constructively, or shut up.

Got this album today. Same tired melodies, similar riffs, whiny vocals. This album is not a step forward from Waking The Fallen. The instruments are better and their are some neat breakdowns but it seems as if they're trying to make up for the drums they didn't utilize on WTF and the drumming sounds out of place at times. But the riffing style isn't as hard hitting snf the riffs are certainly not as catchy as WTF. Not impressive at all.

Ok, just to clear some things up. Avegend Sevenfold used to be metalcore. City of Evil is not metalcore. You mentioned the screaming; yes, metalcore usually has mostly screamed vocals, like on STST. Waking the Fallen was more metal, but still with some core in it. This album has no screaming at all, except in some spots for effect, not actual vocals. City of Evil is really just metal. Kinda poppy too with some of the vocals. That's most likely because they got Axl Rose's voice coach, so of course the vocals will suck.

So, in conclusion, kiddies.

STST = Metalcore

WTF = Mostly Metal

CoE = Pop sounding gay vocaled metal-ish.

Some people aren't going to enjoy the new shadows. Just gotta keep an open mind, and I understand if you really hate the new shadows.

Music isnt all about the vocals you morons. Music is the instruments and the vocals together. Yeah of course the vocals are gonna sound different cuz he burst a blood vessel in his throat. But be a little more open mindedThis Message Edited On 07.09.05
