Wednesday, September 9th The 2009 Mercury Prize was awarded to debutante Speech Debelle at a ceremony in London last night.
The South London rapper took home the award for her album Speech Therapy, released to under-the-radar acclaim in June.
The Mercury Prize is awarded yearly to new and underground artists and carries a prize haul of £20,000 ($33,040), however it's the accompanying increase in album sales that is most lucrative for the artists. Last year's winners, Elbow, recorded a sevenfold increase in sales for their album, The Seldom Seen Kid.
Past winners of the Mercury Prize include Suede (1993), Portishead (1995), Pulp (1996) and Dizzee Rascal (2003). Perhaps the most notable runner-up was Radiohead's OK Computer in 1997, a feat the Oxford band repeated thrice more with Amnesiac (2001), Hail To The Thief (2003) and In Rainbows (2008).

Wednesday, July 8th A collective gasp of amazement swept the music world today as it was alleged Black Eyed Pea-In-Chief will.i.am may not be the most original musician in the world.
The source of the allegation in question is electronic musician Freeland (real name: Adam Freeland), who noticed an odd similarity between a 2008 composition of his entitled 'Mancry' (featuring one Tommy Lee on drums) and a track from the new Black Eyed Peas album The E.N.D., entitled 'Party All The Time.'
More specifically, more than one source has put it forward that the Peas straight up sampled 'Mancry' and added their own vocals to the track. The Daily Swarm demands that listeners "check out Lee’s drums as a focal point of the track." Freeland himself has also become involved, tweeting" "Listen to our song 'Mancry'. Now listen to Black Eyed Peas 'Party all the time' WTF!"
WTF indeed. Perez Hilton points out that will.i.am was reportedly in attendance ...more

Wednesday, July 1st Troubled rap monthly Vibe magazine will shut its doors with immediate effect, citing its failure to "restructure the huge debt on our small company.”
Vibe Media Group chief Steve Aaron broke the news to staff via an internal memo, which was of course immediately leaked to the press. He wrote: "The print advertising collapse hit Vibe hard, especially as key ad categories like automotive and fashion, which represented the bulk of our top 10 advertisers, have stopped advertising or gone out of business."
While one has to expect that Vibe heads explored all options available to them, they appear to have overlooked the obvious: attempting to sell the business back to founder Quincy Jones. The past week has been particularly painful for the legendary record producer, who has also had to suffer the death of his protege Michael Jackson.
Jones has vowed to buy back the magazine and re-launch it as a web-only publication: "Print and all that stuff is over, ...more 2008 may well go down as the year Axl Rose defied us and provided that Chinese Democracy had, in fact, existed all these years. Less than a year later Q-Tip will bring another long, drawn-out saga to an end when he finally officially releases Kamaal The Abstract on September 15.
Originally scheduled for release in 2001, and then pushed back to 2002, and finally released to the media for review before being unceremoniously shelved on the eve of release, Kamaal The Abstract has circulated in underground (read: internet) circles for the better part of the past decade while Q-Tip has successfully grappled with his former label to wrestle control of the masters.
