Teena Marie dies 31 replies

American soul/r&b singer Teena Marie has died at the age of 54.

Marie, who was born Mary Brockert in 1956, was found dead in her home by her daughter on Sunday morning. No cause of death was given, however it has been suggested her death was linked with a seizure she suffered last month.

Marie, a protégé of Rick James, was one of the few white r&b singers to enjoy sustained success through the '80s, christening herself the "Ivory Queen of Soul."

She is best known for her 1985 hit 'Lovergirl.' However her most lasting contribution to music was the so-called Brockert Initiative, a legal case taken by Marie against her label Motown, which established the artist's right to walk away from a contract if the label refuses to release new material.

Prince ends the internet 77 replies

In what many individuals (meaning Wikipedia) have described as "signs of early Alzheimers" and "a facepalm of epic proportions", Prince has ended his long struggle to stop people from listening to his music by officially declaring the internet dead.

"The internet is completely over," Prince proclaimed in an interview with the UK's Daily Mirror newspaper, which was later posted onto the website with no apparent delay. "I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won't pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can't get it.

"The internet's like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good.

"They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you."

Prince will release a brand new album, 20TEN, free with the Saturday edition of the UK's Daily Mir ...more

Prince's Hip Dilemma 21 replies

Prince has been seen sporting a diamoned/pearl studded cane but not just because it's sparkly. In sad news, it seems as the many-named singer has been experiencing hip problems since 2005. Recently, the extremity of the problem has been growing.
The problem comes in with Prince's religion. Jehovah's Witnesses don't believe in blood transfusions. Without one, it's unlikely the problem will cease. The singer has been 'popping painkillers and hoping that it goes away.' Rumors exist, however, that the singer is open to 'secret surgeries'.

Prince sues fans 27 replies

More legal action on the internets abounds as Prince's legal team have initiated action against three fansites, instructing them to remove all pictures, images, lyrics, and artwork, lest they be shut down.
The sites in question are housequake.com, princefans.com, and prince.org. The owners, who believe that this is part of a wide crackdown on alleged violation of Prince's copyright, have formed Prince Fans United to defend themselves from what they see as 'a violation of their right to free speech'.
"Prince claims that fansites are not allowed to present any artwork with Prince's likeness, to the extent that he has demanded removal of fans' own photographs of their Prince-inspired tattoos and their vehicles displaying Prince-inspired license plates," says a statement at princefansunited.com. The site also notes that this is "an injustice to the very fans who have supported Prince's career, many since the very beginning." It is understood that Prince Fa ...more

Prince Free CD Fallout Continues 4 replies

Prince's new album Planet Earth yesterday became the first studio album by a major recording artist to be distributed for free by a national newspaper. Britain's Mail On Sunday took the honour, but not without facing the protestations of almost all of its broadsheet and tabloid competitors (the irony was apparently lost) and several within the music retail business.

BBC Magazine ran an article on Friday examining both sides of the argument:

[quote=BBC Magazine]Although covermounts have for years been a major concern to the Entertainment Retailers Association, its director general Kim Bayley says this marks a new low.

"It devalues the music and the losers will be new artists who are trying to come through who won't have any support from recording companies because established artists are chucking out their music for free.

"Consumers only have so much listening time in the week and if they receive the new album from Pr ...more

Prince gets flak for free cd 12 replies

http://business.guardian.co.uk/story/0,,2114557,00.html
The eagerly awaited new album by Prince is being launched as a free CD with a national Sunday newspaper in a move that has drawn widespread criticism from music retailers.
The Mail on Sunday revealed yesterday that the 10-track Planet Earth CD will be available with an "imminent" edition, making it the first place in the world to get the album. Planet Earth will go on sale on July 24.
"It's all about giving music for the masses and he believes in spreading the music he produces to as many people as possible," said Mail on Sunday managing director Stephen Miron. "This is the biggest innovation in newspaper promotions in recent times."
The paper, which sells more than 2m copies a week, will be ramping up its print run in anticipation of a huge spike in circulation but would not reveal how much the deal with Prince would cost.
One music store executive described the plan as ...more

Prince: Big Brother? 6 replies

Prince is to play an impromptu show on "Big Brother" this summer, according to reports.
The diminutive star has scheduled a mammoth 21-date tour of the UK in August and September and is now apparently lining-up an appearance on the TV show.
He is expected to appear live either in the garden or on a video link beamed into the house from a London studio.
A 'source' explained: "Prince is a huge fan of 'Big Brother'. He has tuned in to every series of the show so far and loves the concept.
"His management are in discussions with producers Endemol to arrange a gig. Prince is hoping it will be an unforgettable moment that goes down in 'BB' history."
A Channel 4 insider told The Sun they were concerned that some of the people on the show won't recognise the pop legend.
"Housemates like Tracey the raver and Shabnam the R&B fan will probably be appreciative of their own audience with Prince.
"But some of ...more

Prince: Too Sexy for Football? 24 replies

Prince's performance at the 41st Superbowl this past Sunday has been praised as one of the best in history. However, bloggers and critics have started criticizing Prince's guitar performance as inappropriately phallic, specifically, the part where Prince's shadow is projected, which has been called, "a rude-looking shadow show," by Daily News critic David Bianculli, also adding that it was, "embarrassingly rude, crude and unfortunately placed." This might get the FCC involved, who have been particularly picky about decency ever since Janet Jackson infamously had one of her fun bags exposed a few Superbowls ago.

Let me just say, when hasn't the guitar been a phallic symbol? From Jimi Hendrix to Jimmy Page to the great CC Deville, the guitar has always been a giant, loud penis in rock music. And Prince is one sexy motherfucker, what were the critics expecting? Next Superbowl, they'll probably have to get Clay Aiken or Bizarre from D12 for everyone to fi ...more

Prince to Play Super Bowl 14 replies

Prince will perform during the halftime show of February's Super Bowl.
As previously reported by our man on the ground Thor, the slot during the most-watched television show in the United States has come under scrutiny since Janet Jackson's breast-baring "wardrobe malfunction" in 2004 led to sharply higher fines for broadcast indecency.
This past Super Bowl, the Rolling Stones were bleeped a few times during their three-song set, which [bleep]ed them the [bleep] off.
The 48-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee will perform at Dolphin Stadium near Miami on Sunday, February 4. The game will be televised on CBS. This year's event, held in Detroit at Ford Field, drew 91 million viewers in the United States alone, according to figures released by Nielsen Media Research.
It's unlikely Prince will have problems with censors from the network and the National Football League. He has become a Jehovah's Witness and disavowed the kinkier tunes that make up ...more
