It's nothing to do with the sound at all, just the name and idiocy it inadvertently implies |

11.09.13 | I was never really clear on why future garage was such a stupid term, but afaik it's because it was coined when people were like "HURP DURP LET'S COMBINE GARAGE AND DUBSTEP AND CALL IT FUTURE GARAGE" when just "dubstep" would suffice. Is that anywhere close to right? |

Dubstep already comes from garage, you can't really combine the two. Essentially, Garage went the way of the dodo, with a lot of its sound being assimilated into UK house, funky and, of course, dubstep. Then it came back a few years later; sometimes the sound was exactly the same, some artists made heavier versions, some made more atmospheric tunes (so essentially like every other genre ever invented, right?) But it was heralded as a renaissance and Whistla (the head of L2S records and a producer in his own right) coined the whole movement as future garage, because everything needs a new name, right? Having a more modern production aesthetic can't simply be the catalyst for a new movement, if the reason is simply that technology has advanced so drastically over the last 10 or so years. It's 2step revival, and I guess as a name, it's a way of distancing itself from, well, "brostep" |
