07.30.19 | Another good selection, y'all! As Bill in Ted would say if set in the 70s. Be groovy to each other, and PROG ON, DUDES!!! |

07.30.19 | all great picks, lots of oldies this tourney which I love |
Divaman
07.30.19 | Excellent tournament, maybe the best one yet. Congrats to LordSirGentleman for the win, and to e, for making it such a hard fought victory. And once again, thanks to our friend Friday for putting in the work that makes these tournaments so much fun. |
Zig
07.30.19 | Overall, a nice prog selection. Really fun tournament. |
e210013
07.30.19 | Again we had a great and diversified prog tourney. Once more we need to thanks to Friday. He's the man, really.
My favourite albums here were "Halloween" and "From Silence To Somewhere". Fortunatelly both albums were in the final and I'm very glad with it. Both deserved to win. So, the winner is fair.
My favourite albums of this tourney, besides the two mentioned before, are "La Crudelta Di Aprile", "EverEvership II", "Night On Bald Mountain" and "2973 La Nemica Dei Ricordi".
The revelation of this tourney is "2973 La Nemica Dei Ricordi". Despite the originality of the story of the band, the album is awesome with its retro-prog style. I became fan of them.
Besides that, it was a pleasure to revisit Fish and check the other bands that I diddn't know before.
Finally, the album most difficult to diggest was "Hopes And Fears", courtesy of my countryman and friend Zig. The album is best than we think after a first listening. The music is great, but Dagmar's voice is a bit difficult to diggest with its opera style. Still, I think its a case of an acquiring taste. By the way, I changed its rating to a 3.5. It's an album that can grow more on me, really.
Cheers my prog friends. Long life to prog. Till our next Friday's tourney. Meanwhile, I hope we continue in contact on Sputnik with our reviews and comments. |

07.30.19 | Cool to see Wobbler won!
There were some excellent entries this time! it was fun guys! |
TwigTW
07.30.19 | It was nice to see Wobbler work for it in the final round. It's my favorite, so it was also nice to see it win. I thought all of the entries were great this time around. I'd say, overall, this was my favorite group of albums from any of the contests... Thanks for hosting it Friday. It was a lot of fun, as always!
...and I hope everything went well with your bar exam. |
e210013
07.30.19 | Yeah, I forgot to mention the same said by Diva and Twig. This was, perhaps, the best tournament of the three I participated.
And I hope everything went well with your bar exam, too. |
MrSirLordGentleman
07.30.19 | I still think that out of the two winners I've had in this tournament, I find Alturas de Machu Picchu to be waaaaaaaaaay better than Wobbler's hehehe |
Jethro42
07.30.19 | From the get go, I knew Wobbler would win even if i had not heard some entries still.
What surprised me the most in the tourney is the goodness, the quality from every entries. In effect, all of them with no exception contain at least one or two great songs.
My top 4 favorites are Pulsar, Wobbler, The Mercury Tree and Wallenstein. I'm not including my entry, but like most of you already know, I would have preferred to choose Il Paese Del Tramonto, but I realized too late it was better than La Crudelta Di Aprile.
Thank you Friday, for another awesome tourney. You're really the man.
...and I hope everything went well with your bar exam. [3] |

07.31.19 | Thanks for all the hard work put into this Friday! Had a lot of fun and it was a great tournament, even if I didn't have as much time to listen and vote during the second half of it. Will def join in for the next one! |

07.31.19 | Anyone else interested in a tournament of champions maybe over the winter? It would require less time since we mostly know all the albums already. |

It's been that many? damn |

08.01.19 | Crazy, right? I was pretty gung-ho about it in 2014 with 3 tourneys, and since then there's been one per year! |

08.01.19 | "I was pretty gung-ho about it in 2014"
feels like yesterday tbh |
TwigTW
08.01.19 | I can't believe it's been 8. I'd have guessed 3 or 4... maybe I'm just blocking out all the contests where I lost in the first round. |
Friday13th
08.01.19 | You know I think I miscounted, I think it's 7.
1. Los Jaivas
2. T2
3. Mcluhan
4. Landberk
5. UTO
6. Carmen
7. Wobbler |
Scheumke
08.01.19 | Then first do a preliminary tournament with all the runner ups for a wildcard spot ;) |
Friday13th
08.01.19 | @Scheumke I could do that! I was thinking of something else, but I like that idea. Maybe I'll even pull out an old user like JamieTwort from his long slumber! |
e210013
08.01.19 | "Maybe I'll even pull out an old user like JamieTwort from his long slumber!"
Yeah, you must wake him from that deep prog sleep. He should never have fallen asleep of prog. Lol.
Now seriously. Maybe one tourney with all the runner ups and a final tourney with the champions of all tourneys. Or a mix of all things, with the winners of both tourneys against each other.
The options are diverse and all are very nice and interesting. I trust on your cappacity and good taste. You're the man of this tourneys. All the options are great. So, the final decision is yours. Go ahead, pal. |
bgillesp
08.03.19 | I’d still like to see it have 16 to give runner ups a chance to redeem themselves, but any way you decide to do it would be cool Friday |

bgillesp
04.27.21 | I’m pretty sure I’ve found my rec. it’s not in the database yet so I will need to add it, but I also have a couple more to check |
Jethro42
04.27.21 | It's not obvious, our own choice must manage to satisfy the contestants as well. We have to please both. |
Friday13th
04.28.21 | It’s always a struggle choosing whether to gamble on an album that deviates from the norm at the risk of alienating some, or choosing a crowd pleaser. We do need both in these tourneys to make it interesting! |
bgillesp
04.28.21 | I always pick the rec for me first to try and make sure the style that suits me is represented. (The Wallenstein year I just couldn’t find a good rec in time though because I wasn’t really in love with that one). Im glad that people submit albums from lots of different little sub-styles though because the discovery is way more fun for me than trying to win. |
Jethro42
04.28.21 | We also tend to overrate a player's album to let say a 3.5 instead of a frank 2.5, so as not to sadden him. |
e210013
04.28.21 | Yeah, it's true. But this is even truer if you are rating an album that finished to be released by a unknown band. If we are too much harsh with our rating, the guys aren't able to sell their music. |
Jethro42
04.28.21 | If you give a low but legit rating, it gives the good temperature to a band who will try to improve/redirect themselves for their next release. It's always better to stay true to ourselves, and give the right rating as much as possible. |
e210013
04.28.21 | Yeah, it's true. But I prefer not review an album to a new band with a very low rating. So, I prefer not review it. I'm not comfortable in thinking that I was somehow responsible for the end of their career. But, this is only me. |
Divaman
04.28.21 | I always had that problem when I was involved in my local music scene. There's nothing more awkward then when someone you know asks you to review their new album, and then you listen to it and find that you hate it. |
e210013
04.28.21 | Yeah, that's the point. And this is really terrible. I really don't know what to do. |
Divaman
04.28.21 | Or even that you're lukewarm towards it. |
Divaman
04.28.21 | It's one of the reasons that I stopped reviewing albums for a long while. Sometimes, when I got one that I really didn't care for much, I would just try to describe what I was hearing to the reader without rendering much of a judgment. But that got harder and harder to do. |
e210013
04.28.21 | I can see the point. But that is even harder when we are talking about new bands. They need to survive. But when we are talking of an old band, that isn't so important. Or they had split or they have a solid path already. |
Divaman
04.28.21 | I agree. I don't really worry at all if I have something negative to say about a band that has already made it. |
Jethro42
04.28.21 | Ah Divaman, here's a guy who gives the fair rating all the time, if not a little low here and there ;) |
e210013
04.28.21 | Are you saying that isn't the same with me? Lol. |
Jethro42
04.28.21 | I agree e21, old bands are firmly rooted in the industry. |
Divaman
04.28.21 | Let's face it, guys. A lot of the bands that we're reviewing for our prog tourneys will never know if we give them a bad rating, because they haven't picked up their guitars in 30 or 40 years. :) |
e210013
04.28.21 | I absolutely agree. That is a fact Diva. |
Jethro42
04.28.21 | @e21, you are always generous with your ratings because you write about what you love, and I think you simply dont rate about albums you dont like! |
e210013
04.28.21 | It's true Jethro. Rarely I review albums I don't like. After all, what is interesting when we review an album is to call a positive attention to the albums we love and we think that deserve to be checked by others. |
Jethro42
04.28.21 | ...And you usually don't rate albums you don't like, above all when they are new bands... |
Jethro42
04.28.21 | It's good from time to time, to review a weaker album for a change. It changes the ''modello'' of the review, and it's good for the musicians to notice their album is not that good. That applies for a new band as well. They need to know they have a new direction to take. |
Divaman
04.28.21 | Musicians and other artists are really sensitive, though. There was a young girl out here whose music I really liked. One time, I reviewed her newest album, and I gave what I thought was a mostly-positive review, with one or two mild criticisms. I thought it was clear that in spite of the criticisms, I still really enjoyed her album. But her boyfriend told me later that was absolutely crushed by my review, because all she focus on were the couple of negative things I wrote, even though her boyfriend tried to point out to her all of the positive things I'd said. |
Jethro42
04.28.21 | ''Let's face it, guys. A lot of the bands that we're reviewing for our prog tourneys will never know if we give them a bad rating, because they haven't picked up their guitars in 30 or 40 years.
''

04.28.21 | On the other hand, I have a friend who is a published crime novel writer. And for years, she paid me to read the first draft of her manuscript and to not censor myself at all - the more savage I was, the better she liked it. My critique one time actually rescued one of her characters from death, something I was weirdly proud of. :) |

04.29.21 | I have about 4 albums sitting aside waiting for the call, it has built up over the year, and will be different then I thought last spring, will be fun to listen to my previous selections to make a smart pick. 04.30.21 | @wham49 That’s the spirit! |
e210013
04.30.21 | I'm going to put here the basic rules that the tournament organizer, Friday 13th demands:
Rules will be just like prior prog tournaments, which means that it must be a prog album with fewer than 30 votes on Sputnik and that wasn't chose for the other previous tournaments.
If you have any other questions is better to talk with him, especially about the albums already chosen for the past tournaments. |
