07.28.18 | sorry, I've been extremely busy with work lately, crunch time and all. have not had the chance to listen to new music at all for the past 3 weeks. i've yet to listen to Eden, so if and when i ever get a chance to, i'll cast my votes for both matchups. |
Jethro42
07.28.18 | I removed this comment. It was a failed joke. |
Divaman
07.29.18 | OK, I'm sticking with my picks; I vote for Carmen and Gosta. (The pick between Gosta and Eden was a tough one, though). |

07.29.18 | 1 and 4. first two are an easy matchup. simply didnt like shub. way too fucking retarded lol. second one i find the goofier older stuff more charming |
hansoloshotfirst
07.29.18 | 2 and 4. |
Jethro42
07.29.18 | Shub is better than I thought. Bass is sexy. Every songs have their strenghts and weaknesses. i'm not a fan of the disjointed parts and the guitar distortions, and most of the vocals irritate me. However, those at the ending of ''Yog Sothoth'' are well done. Pretty good album overall.
For me it's the more friendly Carmen that I ended up loving still more, and Gosta which seem to have a difficult start with the candidates and yet could compete in a tighter way. I'm surprised it's not the case atm.
1 and 3. |
TwigTW
07.29.18 | ^^That's how it starts... One day you notice Shub sounds better than you thought it did. You even like some of it--despite the fact it irritates you. Slowly you get to the point where there's nothing you can do but admit you love it in all its irritating glory, lol. |
Divaman
07.29.18 | OR the first couple of listens plant the brainworm squarely in your cerebrum. With each listen, it grows, and eats more and more of your gray matter. In the end, you're just sitting there with a blank expression and drool running down your face. You can't even hear it when your family desperately calls out your name. You can't move anymore, imagining that you're listening to it again and again. But in your mind, you just keep playing it, thinking, "Wow! This is great!" And it never. Stops. |
TwigTW
07.29.18 | "In the end, you're just sitting there with a blank expression and drool running down your face." ... I thought that was old age Diva. You mean I just need to turn the record off?!? ;-) |
Divaman
07.29.18 | Twig! Twig! Can you hear us, Twig? ... Damn it boys, I think we lost another one. |
Divaman
07.29.18 | And if my understanding of e's request is correct, he votes for Shub and Gosta (2 and 3). (Apologies for stepping into your space, Friday. I just get excited when the tournament gets this far along). |
Jethro42
07.29.18 | From the start, Shub was like a small wild beast that you tame for a while, but you better leave it loose when it's gaining weight, and when the claws are getting sharp.
Now I find it ALMOST inoffensive, and everything is almost getting in place...at some of its non irritating places at least...
Thanks to Twig and Diva, for your expressive inspiration. Diva, you're so extreme when you want it, lol.

07.29.18 | Jethro, I'd hate to even tell you how I much I control myself on this site, heh heh. |
Jethro42
07.29.18 | @Divaman;
One thing is sure, you express yourself with an ease and in a colorful way in the language of Shakespeare, as seen on your reviews and elsewhere. I've started to read your blogs btw. I've read your Blackmore's Night write up and a portion of Yes at 50 Tour. It's a good debut for the French speaker I am :) |
bgillesp
07.29.18 | Bump for votes. I agree with Diva on interpreting e |

07.30.18 | I'm having a hard time deciding between Gosta and my own. Gosta is my favorite new discovery, but Eden is my baby ;) I have to listen to both again |
Divaman
07.30.18 | Yeah, I know what you mean. That Gosta/Eden matchup is a tough one. |
Friday13th
07.30.18 | We've already subjected Eden to the magnifying glass, so I don't feel bad saying this. The intro/first theme of Gosta's "Bergslagen" sounds a lot like Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Dance of Maya." Still a good song with lots of variety. I get a Mike Oldfield vibe with the guitar tone. |
Divaman
07.30.18 | You're right, Friday. I was thinking about the similarities to that and Mahivishnu when I relistened this morning. |

07.30.18 | The last song on Gosta reminds me of Sigur Ros in parts. Very chill. |
bgillesp
07.30.18 | Poor Shub :( |
Jethro42
07.30.18 | Yes Friday, same for the third song. Gosta is decidedly into an eclectic prog close to symphonic, with a post rock approach here and there. Same formula for their other albums. I sincerely hope most of the candidates have taken the time to listen to Gosta in its entirety, and a couple times at least. |
Jethro42
07.30.18 | Also, I just read your Mahavishnu reference. Good call. Been a long time since I jammed that band!... |
Sabrutin
07.30.18 | 2 and 3 |
Divaman
07.30.18 | Looks like Shub's still in it. And Gosta and Eden are neck-and-neck again. |
bgillesp
07.30.18 | Gosta v Eden is a close call for most everyone I believe. Shub wins easy for me, but Carmen is my second favorite left |
TwigTW
07.30.18 | I'm going with 2 and 4. |

07.30.18 | Carmen: Universe, Divaman, smaugman, Jethro, tmthy, wham

Friday13th
07.30.18 | Well this is a nail-biter. Twig, I'm absolutely shocked you chose Shub! |
Papa Universe
07.30.18 | I voted for Carmen, but if it wins (the whole thing), I'll be shocked. |
Friday13th
07.30.18 | I'm sure Carmen is an acquired taste for some, but considering Los Jaivas won once, the whole Spanish thing doesn't seem to far off from the mainstream tastes of Sputnik's proggers. Shub though! That would certainly be the darkest album to ever win one of these. I guess you could think of it as we're having a good Zeuhl kick, with UTO having won last time. |
Jethro42
07.30.18 | May the best win!...I bet it won't happen. |
bgillesp
07.30.18 | The Spanish love is why I rec'd Triana |
Friday13th
07.30.18 | Good thought, bgill, I did like your Triana pick. I only chose Shub over it for the novelty factor. |
SCREAM!
07.30.18 | Both tough picks but I gotta give it to Shub and Eden |
Friday13th
07.31.18 | Okay, I've come to a decision. I realized I've been appreciating both Eden and Gosta the more I listen to them, which makes it very hard for me to make up my mind.
Eden is squarely within everything that makes good '70s symphonic prog with all the epic shifts and bombast to make me grin all the way through. Gosta is more abstract and restrained, but it makes me excited for prog that could to this day be hidden in someone's mind. It's right up my alley in almost every way, like King Crimson but for the modern day. I'm flattered Eden has made it this far, it really was the best I could find that none of you had heard before. I leave Eden's fate in the hands of y'all, and I'm ship-hopping to Jethro's vessel. 1 and 3 it is!
Carmen: Universe, Divaman, smaugman, Jethro, tmthy, wham, Friday
Shub: bgill, hansolo, e21, Sabrutin, Twig, SCREAM
(7:6)
Gosta: Divaman, Jethro, e21, tmthy, Sabrutin, Friday
Eden: Universe, bgill, smaugman, hansolo, wham, Twig, SCREAM

Friday13th
07.31.18 | Jammin Shub m/
I hope you guys are having as much fun as I am. These last four albums are all killer. |
Jethro42
07.31.18 | No way, Friday!...i'm really flattered that you dig Gosta that much. Eden has nothing to envy to Gosta.
I was aware of the risk I took to choose a modern prog rock act because a big amount of them tends to borrow too much from bands of the 70s and the 80s, and they often fail to find an identity. Also, an instrumental band might not be for everyone. The opener song ''Kontrast'' and ''Innilegur'' are nothing too special, but these guys are original and they innovate enough to call our attention.
Eden amazed me for its vocal harmonies dancing through the lush orchestration. The t/t is so strong and reminds me of band Renaissance, the medieval feel of ''Eden 1 Teil'' and the epic varied final that sums up the album.
Both albums are very melodic. I think Gosta is more immediate and in your face than Eden that takes more attention and more listens to fully appreciate.
|
Friday13th
07.31.18 | Yeah, I don't know about immediate, though I did like Gosta the first time I heard it. Instrumentals require an appreciation for subtlety, and Gosta has it in spades. Especially those angular harmonies with some creative pitch-bending that I'm a real sucker for. |
Divaman
07.31.18 | Wow, one vote difference in each contest. Razor-thin margins. You guys have all outdone yourselves with this tournament. |
Friday13th
07.31.18 | Fripper, Intruder...where y'all at? |
Frippertronics
07.31.18 | Carmen and Eden, perhaps? |
TwigTW
07.31.18 | I was wondering how this ended, but I see it has not... |

Friday13th
07.31.18 | That's a solid lead for Carmen and Eden. I'll give the remaining participants a few hours and then I'll call it. |
TwigTW
07.31.18 | It's so close, should probably just call it for Shub ;-) |
Divaman
07.31.18 | Twig! Twig! ... It's no use, guys. I think he's gone. |
TwigTW
07.31.18 | lol, was worth a try. |
Jethro42
07.31.18 | It feels the end...It seems that Gosta wouldn't stand a chance in the finals anyway. |
Divaman
07.31.18 | I'm not sure. It was pretty close with Eden. |
TwigTW
07.31.18 | Yeah, everything that's left is great. I could see any of them in the finals. |
Jethro42
07.31.18 | A personal feeling, Divaman. I feel that those who have voted for Eden did it with no hesitation. Maybe it's only me who expected to pick up couple more votes, and I kinda find myself unpleasantly surprised. |
Friday13th
07.31.18 | Alright, Carmen v. Eden it is! |
