01.20.15 | My 3 favorites:
1. Asia Minor
2. East of Eden
3. Gnidrolog |
gagnonov
01.20.15 | tourney was great, personal fave (excluding my own entry) was greenslade, even though it isn't even their best album. should have went with their self-titled debut. asia minor, alusa fallax and lucifer's friend were also great |
Onirium
01.20.15 | I would have expected The Enid to survive at least until the semi-finals. But Anomaly is a legitimate winner anyways. A lot of stuff here have been excellent, but my 3 favourites would be:
1. Triumvirat
2. The Enid
3. either Lucifer's Friend or McLuhan |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.20.15 | why isnt anubis at the bottom with white arms |
SCREAM!
01.20.15 | @gagno I'll definitely check out the s/t now. Suggested this one because its the only one I've heard by the band y favorites were:
1.McLuhan
2.Jan Dukes
3.Triumvirat |
menawati
01.20.15 | good fun Friday13th, thanks for doing it |
Mad.
01.20.15 | Luv how you put 16 last |
gagnonov
01.20.15 | ''why isnt anubis at the bottom with white arms''
because it won a round against white arms by default. both were weak af anyway |
Jethro42
01.20.15 | Bravo to gagnonov to win in front of the mighty Double Dimple :P
My 3 favs (excluding mine);
1-Alusa Fallax
2-Jan Dukes
3-Asia Minor
McLuhan would be my 4th
|
OwMySnauze
01.20.15 | white arms would've been top 3 if you guys liked real prog |
manosg
01.20.15 | Great contest! Props to all guys for their suggestions and thanks to Friday for running the whole thing. |
SharkTooth
01.20.15 | 5 should have been in the top 4
"white arms would've been top 3 if you guys liked real prog"
Sorry, I haven't plebbed hard enough to get into it]: |
OwMySnauze
01.20.15 | Congrats gagnonov |
SharkTooth
01.20.15 | Loved this tournament in total, however, there was some really great stuff, especially in comparison to the psychedelic round(though I can't tell about the first prog one since I didn't really take part in that) |
SCREAM!
01.20.15 | There were some greats in that one too. I'd recommend you check out at least the ones that made it to the semi finals! |
Friday13th
01.20.15 | You're welcome, friends. Yeah, lots of great stuff no matter how you splice it. |
Jethro42
01.20.15 | Good rating on 2, Captain! |

01.20.15 | I knew you'd come around, Fri13 |
JJKeys
01.20.15 | Thank god 16 is 16.
7 and 8 should've been higher IMO - other than that I'm a bit eh about everything else |
Friday13th
01.20.15 | 5-8 and 9-16 are not ranked...though 16 was on purpose lol |

01.20.15 | These tourneys are the greatest gifts to sput.

01.20.15 | ya contest was a great idea. only heard 4 and 13 though(and very hastily). cheers friday |

01.21.15 | ''why are you answering my hypothetical question?''
all these flavours and you chose to be salty |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.21.15 | im a savory kind of guy |
Friday13th
01.21.15 | I think you meant rhetorical |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.21.15 | no i meant hypothetical. it was based on the assumed fact that Anubis should be at the bottom of the list with Arms of Athena in the absence of dependable data for that fact (since it got voted into the next round purely out of lack of a better choice even tho it is the worst album here other than white arms) |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.21.15 | but it could also be rhetorical in that it was simultaneously asked to prove the point that it indeed is a shit album |
gagnonov
01.21.15 | who cares, both albums are ass |

01.21.15 | it probably would've suffered the same fate, just with Potsy voting FOR it |
TwigTW
01.21.15 | I'm surprised, thought Triumvirat was going to take it for sure--shows what I know. Also surprised that Lucifer's Friend is the one I can't stop playing--love it. The best is I have 16 great albums to listen to . . . OK, 15 great new albums. ;-) |

02.17.16 | Here are examples of some less known prog gems. I also have a part II;
http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=280733&listid=119293 |
braspberries
02.17.16 | I'd rec Exploration by Possessed. Not the death metal band, early 70s Canterbury stuff.

Dunno how the sound quality is on this. It's also on Spotify though. |
SharkTooth
02.17.16 | Dayum I gotta Czech my ratings for some good prog now |
Friday13th
02.17.16 | @braspberries looks like frickin' Charles Manson in the band photo haha
If I do another it would be at a much slower pace 'cause I'm pretty busy. Maybe a week per match up or something nice and laid back. |
SharkTooth
02.17.16 | As long as you're more reliable than me I see no problem |
TwigTW
02.17.16 | "If I do another it would be at a much slower pace . . . Maybe a week per match . . . "
That sounds great to me. |
Friday13th
02.18.16 | Cool. Look for one starting as soon as SCREAM's discovery rounds are over. I've thought about the genre and decided not to stray from prog and psych. Which do you guys want? We've done prog 2-1 so far, but if you guys have been proggin' lately we can still do another. |
BeyondCosby
02.18.16 | I'm gonna have to remember this list. |
Onirium
02.18.16 | Personally, I think the prog contests have generally been more rewarding than the psych one. Maybe that's a misconception, but I feel the prog movement has more interesting genre variations to offer. |
zakalwe
02.18.16 | Make it 3-1 Friday dude |
TwigTW
02.19.16 | Prog please |
Friday13th
02.19.16 | I recall some preferring psych, but prog seems to be the consensus. It will be basically the same then, just with longer discovery matches. Start searching for that under-30-ratings prog album! |
Frippertronics
02.19.16 | don't test me |
Jethro42
02.19.16 | Prog seems to be neglected on sput since a while. It's time to change that. |
Friday13th
02.19.16 | Amen, Jethro. It's true, I haven't listened to prog in a while. Time to rip out the RPI! |
SharkTooth
02.19.16 | Already got my album |
Friday13th
02.19.16 | Nice. I have lots of options, but I'm having trouble deciding. It's all just so good. |
Jethro42
02.19.16 | Mine will probably be an RPI album. I'm currently trying to find it through 'Prog Archives'. Not sure about its name so yes. I will have to add it to the database if ever I put my hand on it. |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.19.16 | Yes a new contest, so I can finally nominate Catapilla |
Jethro42
02.19.16 | It's not fair, chances are high you're gonna win =P
|
MrSirLordGentleman
02.19.16 | I lost on the first round on the psych contest with Culpeper's Orchard, so don't think all of my nominees will have the same luck as Alturas did haha |
gagnonov
02.19.16 | down as fuck |
Jethro42
02.19.16 | Did you win with Los Jaivas, SirLord, I can't see it... |

Friday13th
02.19.16 | @SCREAM Yeah dude, you're not alone. I am a bit partial to Heresie though hehe |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.19.16 | Keith Relf's Armageddon? I don't think they're prog, songs are long yeah, but they are pure 70's hard rock for me |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.19.16 | You should check them though, Friday, Buzzard has one of the best riffs ever |
Friday13th
02.19.16 | love them riffs |
Friday13th
02.22.16 | I expect to start the next contest on Thursday, so be ready. I know sput is having problems uploading new artists and stuff, but we can deal with it. |
Jethro42
02.22.16 | Don't talk about it buddy, I was so happy to come up with a killer obscure album but when I realized it wasn't already in the database, it saddened me so much. But I found an alternative oc. Hope the staff will soon find a solution about the uploadings. |
Jethro42
02.22.16 | Also, Thursday, wow, we're at the threshold! That's cool! |
SharkTooth
02.23.16 | weird, I just added an album to the database and the site worked just fine |
SharkTooth
02.23.16 | Hey Jethro, tell me the album that isn't in the database and I'll see if I can add it for you |
Jethro42
02.23.16 | Really??? brb |
Jethro42
02.23.16 | Here it is, Shark; http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2211
Please, note that the band is Procession (PROG), and the album is Frontiera. |
SharkTooth
02.23.16 | Okay I see your problem, the second I hit"submit" the site started lagging |
Onirium
02.23.16 | Have you exposed the problem in the forums? |
Jethro42
02.23.16 | Thanks anyway, Shark.
@Onirium, yes, and they answered me ''''There's a known issue with the approval queues right now. Please stand by.'' And they also said to another guy wit the same problem; ''I have been seeing new albums and album edits in the queue (which is empty right now). If you don't see the new album where it should be, I'd point the finger at current technical problems. No real ETA unfortunately, but if you can confirm the album and that it's still not populating, I can see if we can escalate the issue to mx or something.'' And this last answer is not clear enough for me. |
wham49
02.23.16 | I have had loading issues since I stated using around last April, thought it was just my incompetence, new avatars, new albums, actually also my digs don't show up for a couple of days |
TwigTW
02.23.16 | Adding albums has been crazy for about a month--hit and miss.
@Jethro, Sharktooth:
Procession - Frontiera is now added under Procession (ITALY). Make sure you spell ITALY in all caps because it will take them awhile to delete all the blank pages: Procession (prog), Procession (IT), Procession (Italy), Etc. |
SharkTooth
02.23.16 | Well that's good news |
Friday13th
02.23.16 | Thanks, TWIG. So does the site just lag every time we try entering a new artist? |
Jethro42
02.23.16 | That's pretty cool, Twig! Thanks a lot! So I can use my first choice for the contest! Procession have 2 other albums. I'm gonna try to upload them, and if it doesn't work, Twig is there! =P |
SharkTooth
02.23.16 | Ty based TWIG |
Friday13th
02.23.16 | To answer my own question YES it just lags. I attempted to upload Inferno by Metamorfosi yesterday, and even though I closed the tab after the page froze, it did get uploaded eventually. |
Jethro42
02.23.16 | What a coincidence, Friday. I just put Metamorfosi into the Procession' similar artists list, because a Prog Archives reviewer named it as a similar band. I've already heard Inferno, but it's a long time ago. I have to relisten to it. So you become good at uploading stuff. I'll try myself to see if I can unblock. |
Jethro42
02.23.16 | So I uploaded all of the other Procession' albums. But still I don't know if I can start to fully enter a fresh band, starting with its first album...hope I could. |
SharkTooth
02.23.16 | I remember one time trying to add Happy The Man a while back into the database but the site lagged att, thankfully someone else added their albums later on |
Jethro42
02.23.16 | Great band of what I know. Mostly unknown or overlooked on sput. I've heard their first 2 albums and The Muse Awakens. The t/t of the latter is a fantastic track. https://musicmp3.ru/artist_happy-the-man__album_the-muse-awakens.html#.VszX6Un2a1s |
Onirium
02.23.16 | I relistened to their self-titled album yesterday; it was one of my very first "obscure" prog discoveries, but I must say I found the music much less interesting this time than I initially had |
Jethro42
02.24.16 | It's kind of a jazzier Camel, but sometimes it feels they were short of good ideas and it can sound flat and bland. At times it's like a B-movie soundtrack style. There are a few interesting climaxes for sure on the run, but only scattered here and there. I have to revise my rating for that one. Probably more like a 3.5. |
TwigTW
02.24.16 | Sounds like you guys already found your albums. Took me 20 minutes las year, but this time it's taking forever. |
Jethro42
02.24.16 | I don't know if it can help, but I owe you a service, TWIG ;) If you will, take a look at my 2 lists about unknown or overlooked albums. Here is the first one. We never know, it could give you some ideas. If you have questions about a band or another, I'll do my best to inform you.
http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=280733&listid=119293

Onirium
02.24.16 | Here are two brilliant albums I considered submitting at some point, but I opted for a third one recently, so if they can be of any help:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GS5XP4-gmuQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UljOsAsLSKM&list=PL2B7C52E7120A8731 |
TwigTW
02.24.16 | Thanks Jethro and Onirium, I am listening to too much modern prog this year. I think it's throwing my ear off for the real thing, lol. |
Friday13th
02.24.16 | @Onirium was considering both of those! |
SharkTooth
02.24.16 | I'm thinking of entering Carmen-Fandangos In Space
But at the same time I want to enter something nobody has actually heard |
TwigTW
02.24.16 | So hard to find something no one in the contest has heard--especially Jethro. |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.24.16 | mmm if you guys want a contest with extremly obscure albums I suppose Catapilla won't be a good choice since a bunch of us have already check it
It is time to show you guys some more latin prog I suppose |
SharkTooth
02.24.16 | I succeeded last time with Lucifer's Friend so there's still a chance |
Jethro42
02.24.16 | I just discovered a band I just knew by the name. It's symphonic prog with clever instrumentation. The lead guitarist shines particularly. And I named
Fruupp - Future Legends (1973) and I'm the only one who have rated one of their albums. Future Legends is apparently their best one. I gave it a 4.5. |
Jethro42
02.24.16 | ...And I consider to give it a 5. Beautiful compositions, really. |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.24.16 | I have two candidates Blops-Locomotora and Congreso-Congreso
The first one is the "normal" one so it will easier for everyone to get into it, while the second one has some Jaivas characteristics, in fact, the first songs are pure latin folk (and then it gets pretty interesting) so I don't know if you guys would dig it
Tough choice to choose between these two for my nomination |
Friday13th
02.24.16 | @Sharktooth I totally encourage Fandangos...I'd probably vote for it.
@Jethro and Gentleman Never heard of those, so you guys are on the right track if you're shooting for completely new for sputnik. |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.24.16 | Carmen rules
I prefer Triana though |
Friday13th
02.24.16 | Yeah, Triana is another great one. Pick whatever you guys want. If you aim to win, those are good picks. |
Onirium
02.24.16 | I think my choice has been settled on Maltid by Samla Mammas Manna - such a peculiar, eccentric and light-hearted record. |
Friday13th
02.24.16 | That's some good classic RIO. Surprised more sput regulars haven't rated it. |
Frippertronics
02.24.16 | gonna have to go with Utopia's debut this time |
Friday13th
02.24.16 | heck yeah 30 minute epic |
Frippertronics
02.24.16 | by no means obscure, the thing sold quite well when it came out but it's only got 10 ratings on here so it's gotta be on the tourney |
Jethro42
02.25.16 | I still hesitate between 2 albums.
---Procession (ITALY) - Frontiera which is half classic rock, half prog related based around 2 excellent guitarists and a talented (Italian) singer, released in the 70s. Very melodic and catchy. They know how to rock.
---Fruupp - Future Legends which is a lite symphonic prog from the 70s which contains a blend of pastoral and more agressive passages. The band also knows how to rock mostly with its frenetic guitar playing, but the general mood consists of quiet guitar breaks, excellent vocals and light keyboards. I really love the style of their incredibly skillful guitarist
Both bands are pretty original. |
SharkTooth
02.25.16 | I got like 5 albums I want to choose from rn, I'll prob narrow it down in the coming days |
Friday13th
02.25.16 | Ya had better narrow it down by tomorrow 'cause that's when I'm posting the preliminary. |
Jethro42
02.25.16 | The tourney is supposed to begin tomorrow, Shark. It's time to proceed by elimination :) |
Jethro42
02.25.16 | You beat me at it Friday... |
SharkTooth
02.25.16 | Oh I thought the prelim was next week lol
Guess I got to get movin'
(sux that my headphones are broken) |
Frippertronics
02.25.16 | yo Friday I'm probably gonna be out but make sure to put this in for me please
Utopia - Todd Rundgren's Utopia
link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CO0aqSBTVJk |
Friday13th
02.25.16 | That's fine, Fripp, but give me a short description "why you like it." If you guys are completely sure you can give it to me now but include a description. |
Frippertronics
02.25.16 | "while not exactly obscure by any means, this band fronted by Todd Rundgren was his expansion into the realm of progressive rock, previously flirted with on albums such as "Something/Anything?", "A Wizard, A True Star", and "Todd". "Utopia" is his first full-on attempt at progressive rock, and while truly excessive at some points (seriously, a thirty-minute instrumental epic?), this album is perhaps as challenging as any other album in the genre, yet is far more accessible due to Rundgren's pop sensibilities lingering on tracks such as 'Freedom Fighters'". |
SharkTooth
02.25.16 | fuck it I'm putting in Fandangos in Space
put the description as "The best non-latin flamenco-prog you've never heard" and I'll put something more descriptive later |
Friday13th
02.25.16 | how about...
AHORA! BEEEEEEEEEUUUUUUUUUZZZZZZZZ |
SharkTooth
02.25.16 | actually put that instead |
Frippertronics
02.25.16 | who's gonna put some Magma in this |
Friday13th
02.25.16 | I have one zeuhl album among my choices. Generally I'm all zeuhled out besides jamming Mekanik daily ;) |
Frippertronics
02.25.16 | gotta get some Attahk up in here, prog funk jazz, the last hurrah of prime Magma |
Jethro42
02.25.16 | Finally, I choose Landberk - One Man Tells Another
Album is about dark atmospheres. The music is soaked through in melancholy and sadness with an overpowering sense of beauty.
Here's the appropriate link; https://musicmp3.ru/artist_landberk__album_one-man-tells-another.html#.Vs8wckn2a1s |
Friday13th
02.25.16 | Alright guys, I'll have the preliminary up in less than an hour. |
TwigTW
02.25.16 | Yay . . . narrowed it down to two by Julian Jay Savarin--just have to decide which one. |
Jethro42
02.25.16 | Friday, how many people do you need? It seems we haven't reached 16 yet. |
TwigTW
02.25.16 | Maybe shoutbox e210013 and give him a heads-up? This seems like his kind of thing. |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.25.16 | Oh wait, you submit your nominee in here? I did it on the actual list lol
Someone summon menawati from the ashes for this one |
Jethro42
02.25.16 | @TWIG; already done. Now that Friday submitted the preliminaries, chances are high that we'll get some more visitors.
@SirLord, yes it would have been cool if mena were a part of it. |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.25.16 | What about nag? You should know how to contact him, jethro |
Friday13th
02.25.16 | You are supposed to submit on the new list, I just did it early as a favor. Yeah guys, summon whoever you think would be interested. |
Jethro42
02.25.16 | I haven't seen Nag at all for about a month on here. I have his email though. I could contact him, we never know. |
SharkTooth
02.25.16 | Shoutboxed animalsassummit as he loved the last tourney so much |
