Friday13th
04.13.14 | Voting for M2 will close Sunday afternoon and this one will close on Tuesday afternoon...I'm just beginning to seeeeeee! Now I'm on my waaaaaaay...Sorry, couldn't resist. |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.13.14 | only reading the descriptions I think my vote will go to Nosound, but I'll jam them both of course |
SCREAM!
04.13.14 | Not much of a DT fan either but we'll see how it goes |
mandan
04.13.14 | Glad to see that I'm not the only one around here who's not a big DT fan. In my opinion they are very overrated.
Awake and I&W are decent albums though imo. |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.13.14 | They're a great band, Metropolis is an awesome album, but EVERY prog metal band sounds exactly like them, so their sound annoys me a little bit now |
mandan
04.13.14 | Yeah, I believe they have quite a few copycats. But there are quite a few bands I prefer to them (Queensryche, Porcupine Tree, Opeth). I just can't listen much to DT, they kinda annoy me tbh. Apart from my (somewhat grudging) respect for Awake and I&W, I generally consider them to be bloated wankers. But that's just my opinion ofc. |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.13.14 | Porcupine Tree is an excellent band, probably because they're very psychedelic influenced, I don't really like Queensryche and well, I really don't know why I haven't heard Opeth yet |
mandan
04.13.14 | Check MAYH dude. Lots of people start with BWP or SL, but personally I think they're overrated.
Most dig MAYH anyways so it's a fairly safe rec. |
Havey
04.13.14 | afterthoughts |
mandan
04.13.14 | Also give it time, it prob might not click on first listen. You might have to hear it at least 3 times before it clicks. |
manosg
04.13.14 | Afterthoughts is an excellent album. Those who dig Porcupine Tree or post-Judgement Anathema will surely enjoy it. |
mandan
04.13.14 | Should be a sweet dig for me then. |
Havey
04.13.14 | 1 is soo bad lmao |
menawati
04.13.14 | i vote for afterthoughts |
zakalwe
04.13.14 | Yep, afterthoughts takes my vote as well. |
reportingbird
04.13.14 | afterthoughts |
Jethro42
04.13.14 | Afterthoughts, definitely. |
Salvidian
04.13.14 | I'll have what Jethro's having. |
Onirium
04.13.14 | Afterthoughts
Okay I like some DT and I agree they're overrated, but 1 is just so bad |
Friday13th
04.13.14 | Yeah so far 2 reminds me a lot of Anathema. I'm not crazy about it, but I haven't checked 1 yet. Have you all listened to both before voting? Not going to point fingers or name names, but some look like you're just jumping on the bandwagon. |
PitchforkArms
04.14.14 | afterthoughts is my vote |
Jethro42
04.14.14 | @Friday, I've listened to 4 or 5 songs from Afterthoughts and only one song from #1 and it was enough. |
Friday13th
04.14.14 | Come on guys, we have till Tuesday to give these a full listen. I'd be very disappointed if I suggested an album and people discounted it merely by a DT comparison or by an unimpressive first track. Please be honest and only vote if you've heard it all. Those are the rules. @Jethro42 you are the king of prog, but remember the Magna Carta dude. Even kings must abide by rules! |
Havey
04.14.14 | listened to the whole thing it was painful |
Friday13th
04.14.14 | 'atta boy Havey |
Jethro42
04.14.14 | @Friday, fair enouigh, I'm gonna give a proper listen to Beyond the Bridge and so even if I have a good feeling for Nosound. And I don't even consider I'm the king of prog. If I sometimes look like an expert, it's mainly because I do some music research. Like anybody else.
@Fripp, it's never too late maing. |
Friday13th
04.14.14 | @Fripp I recounted M2 and it's actually a tie, so I'm extending the voting to Tuesday. You could be the tie breaker! |
mandan
04.14.14 | Finally jamming Nosound, good stuff. |
mandan
04.14.14 | I don't think I'll give Nosound anything above a 4, however I'm still on my first listen so I can't really pass judgement. |
mandan
04.14.14 | Don't think BtB is my kinda thing, I dislike the sound of the riffs on it. |
Friday13th
04.14.14 | Both are hard 3's for me. 1 has a few cool ideas with a whole lotta cheese (those singers...ouch),
while 3 [edit 2] is pretty and polished but gets monotonous with its endless melancholy. |
Jethro42
04.14.14 | ^Very cool analysis (by 3 you meant 2) |
Friday13th
04.15.14 | haha I reserve my 2's for the offensively bad |
SCREAM!
04.15.14 | 1 is a 3.5 for me. There are some really moving songs and then some that just kind of plod along. Getting around to 2 now |
SCREAM!
04.15.14 | @Friday Jethro meant the 2nd 3 in that post should be a 2 :P |
Friday13th
04.15.14 | oh yeah duh haha |
Friday13th
04.15.14 | "Where the Earth and Sky Meet" is a pretty good ballad. |
Jethro42
04.15.14 | True, I have to admit. But overall, Nosound is way more listenable to me. Prog Metal has to be original for me, and they didn't invent anything here. |
mandan
04.15.14 | Yeah, I'm like Jethro on that. I value originality in Prog Metal quite a bit. |
Friday13th
04.15.14 | True. I'd argue neither is that original, but 1 is much more obvious since it's in a sea of DT clones. I'd like Nosound in doses but nothing hooked me after the first track and it all sounded samey even on my second listen. I'm voting Beyond the Bridge just cause of that one song. |
mandan
04.15.14 | I gave 1 a 2 because I just couldn't get into any of the first few songs. I only give 3's to albums I can get through but have close to half or half poor songs; and I give 2.5's to albums of which I like half or less than half.
2's not gonna be more than a 4, it'll depend on how this listen goes. |
mandan
04.15.14 | Can't deny I'm liking 2, but I def don't think it'll last long on this tourney. Doesn't really compare with PT's best stuff. |
mandan
04.15.14 | My vote goes to Nosound by a wide margin (more out of dislike for BtB than love for Nosound). |
SCREAM!
04.15.14 | I'll admit I enjoyed BtB more than expected. It's more consistent than Nosound imo without ever reaching the highs of Nosound though. So I'll still give it to Nosound but I might actually keep BtB in my library which I wasn't expecting |
Friday13th
04.15.14 | CLOSED. Nosound wins virtually unchallenged. Hey KjSwantko, you can show your face now. SCREAM and I liked it! |
