Post-punk-noise-drone-industrial

This is basically all of the albums that have influenced me since I graduated high school - if anyone else likes these albums then it is good to know there are kindred spirits out there!
1Godflesh
Streetcleaner

This album shows you can create an oppressive atmosphere with minimalistic,
screaming harmonic guitar riffs, low-end rumbling bass frequencies and militaristic
drum machines - Justin Broadrick is a genius!
2Joy Division
Unknown Pleasures

Not only are the lyrics some of the most realistic and insightful I've ever heard, but
the music is just constantly changing, from weird, ambient dub to straight-up rock
to anthems of desperation and madness - the atmosphere on this album is bleak,
but everyone needs to hear it - great band and album...
3Swans
Children of God

Michael Gira (founder of Swans and vocalist) has a pretty distinctively tormented
vocal style, but at the same time it can be very hypnotic. The music on here is
varied, from acoustic folk (Our Love Lies) to atmospheric chanting and guitar drone
(Sex, God, Sex) - I used to consider "Cop" to be my all-time favorite release by
Swans, but after listening to this one, it shows the new direction of more textural,
atmospheric music they would head in.
4My Bloody Valentine
Loveless

This album is one of the best shoegaze/psychedelic/rock albums of the 90's. The
fact that the guitar sounds and atmosphere could never be re-created by anyone
but Kevin Shields (Vocals, Main Guitar) says something. The music here is very rock
oriented, but the sounds and textures created by the guitars, keyboards, tape
looping (and whatever the hell else Shields brilliantly used here), make you feel like
you're on another plain of existence. Ethereal would probably be the best way to
describe this kind of music.
