ALL Cult of Luna songs ranked

With the release of their latest EP, I figured it would be interesting to try and put all the songs off Cult of Luna’s lengthy discography in order. Ranging from the heavy sludge of their early albums, to earthly atmospheres of the middle, to the dystopian Vertikal, to the space thematics of their later output, they have constantly evolved making it tough to compare it all to each other but at the same time it has kept their career interesting to follow. This list will be released in three parts, the first one involving songs ranked 31-78, the second one 16-30 and the top 15 in the final part. Song descriptions will be added for the top 20 songs.

A Dawn to Fear

Inland Rain

Inland Rain is kind of a “diet Lights on the Hill” in the sense that it follows a bit of the same melodic pattern
and tempo but manages to hold its own distinction as one of the many highlights found on A Dawn to Fear.
And can you really go wrong if you sound like Lights on the Hill?
19Cult of Luna
Salvation

Vague Illusions

Vague Illusions is quite possibly the best showcase of the heavy groove of Salvation, with Klas shouting out
his lungs. The calmness and the build-up in the middle of the song is a post-rock cliche but oh so beautiful.
It’s a truly massive song that could very well act as a fitting closer to the album, but instead is rather
unfortunately sandwiched by two even bigger behemoths.
18Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas
Mariner

A Greater Call

It’s hard to find a better moodsetter for an album than what A Greater Call does for Mariner. The ethereal
vibe that proves to be the bread and butter of Mariner is instantly evident, and the sing along opening line
“we are not conquerors” is sure to catch anyone’s attention.
17Cult of Luna
Eternal Kingdom

Following Betulas

The majestic ending to the stripped-down Eternal Kingdom, Following Betulas marks a bit of a shift from
that sound, hinting a bit more towards the cold and electronic Vertikal. The groove is beautiful but the true
drawing point on here is the gigantic trumpet-laden outro.
16Cult of Luna
Somewhere Along the Highway

Back to Chapel Town

One of the more overlooked tracks on the acclaimed Somewhere Along the Highway, Back to Chapel Town
gets softly going but quickly builds into a sludgy groove. Cacophony and melody, soft and heavy play
together beautifully in this one.
15Cult of Luna
The Raging River

Wave After Wave

Closing the Raging River EP is a banger with a rhythm-dominated first half, turning into a murky, groovy
ending loyal to their recent sound. CoL simply know how to end their albums with style.
14Cult of Luna
Vertikal

In Awe Of

I don’t think it’d be too far-fetched to claim that you can’t find a catchier Cult of Luna riff than In Awe Of’s
main riff. Going through ebbs and flows, In Awe Of is quite a trance-inducing
experience. And man, that riff.
13Cult of Luna
Eternal Kingdom

Owlwood

Opening with a disgustingly heavy riff, Owlwood sets the tone perfectly for the earthly, sludgy Eternal
Kingdom with its jarring heaviness. It’s an absolutely nasty opener and possibly the heaviest “modern” CoL
song out there.
12Cult of Luna
Vertikal

Vicarious Redemption

The undeniable centrepiece on Vertikal, Vicarious Redemption is a mammoth of a tune covering the cold,
unsettling tone of the album. It’s a fresh take on their sound, with Johannes’ vocals absolutely suffocated
beneath the instrumentation that varies from the melodic post-rock to ambient to their trademark sludge
to some wobbly bass sounds. Take your pick.
11Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas
Mariner

The Wreck of S.S. Needle

The Wreck of S.S. Needle's high placing on this list is probably more of a testament on Julie Christmas’ performance than CoL but they both complement each other in a great fashion. Julie goes absolute bonkers on what you could call
your typical modern CoL tune. Was never much of a fan of her but fuck, she changed my mind on this
particular song.
10Cult of Luna
Salvation

Leave Me Here

Leave Me Here is a magical combination of CoL at their heaviest and most serene. The song revolves around the heavy main riff with soft sections embedded in between, both of which belong to the best and most iconic moments in CoL discography.
9Cult of Luna
A Dawn to Fear

The Fall

The closer on CoL's latest LP offering, The Fall is one of those songs that has taken some time for me to truly get into. Once again, the meat is the beautiful outro, which rivals everything else the band has done.
8Cult of Luna
Somewhere Along the Highway

Finland

Can't really say anything that hasn't been said about Finland. A true fan favourite, for a reason. And it's pretty cool to see my home country get some recognition.
7Cult of Luna
A Dawn to Fear

Nightwalkers

Nightwalkers is CoL's own little horror story. The opening build up is nothing short of ominous, and it breaks into one massive slab of heaviness. One of the darkest tunes in their catalogue.
6Cult of Luna
Somewhere Along the Highway

Dim

Dim is a fairly simple one. A huge build up, and a heavy climax, taking 10 minutes. And not a second is wasted.
5Cult of Luna
Eternal Kingdom

Ghost Trail

CoL throw quite a curveball with Eternal Kingdom highlight Ghost Trail, delving into prog like they've never really used to. However I wouldn't even mind if they did more of that because this song is an absolute banger throughout its 11 minute run time. It provides a pretty cool change of pace on the doom and gloom of Eternal Kingdom but isn't certainly without its heavy moments either.
4Cult of Luna
Salvation

Echoes

The slow-burning opener on Salvation, Echoes is completely unrivaled as one in CoL's discography. The build up is long and huge, as layer after layer is added for it to finally burst after six minutes or so. Salvation is a beautiful album but nothing after this song quite manages to live up to the high standard set by it.
3Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas
Mariner

Cygnus

Just when you thought you've seen the best Mariner could offer in The Wreck of S.S. Needle, you're hit with Cygnus, the closer clocking in at nearly 15 minutes. Obviously the moment to remember is Julie's vile screams followed by the long, brooding yet unbelievably groovy outro showing the best of both Julie and CoL.
2Cult of Luna
Somewhere Along the Highway

Dark City, Dead Man

For the longest time I thought you couldn't get more perfect than the iconic closer on CoL's possibly most acclaimed album, SAtH's Dark City, Dead Man. It's yet another ominous, slow-burning song with serene melody, sludgy riffage and relentless shouting executed to perfection. And in a typical CoL fashion, the outro is groovy and dark, constantly adding layers on top of each other finishing it all of with a gigantic climax.
1Cult of Luna
A Dawn to Fear

Lights on the Hill

I have absolutely no words on Lights on the Hill. It was love in first listen, and there has yet to be a time when I haven't felt chills during it. One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, hands down. That should be, to use a dated term, 'nuff said.
