Shows I went to in 2016
Here they are, here's the shows |
1 | Laura Stevenson
Ugh I like barely remember this show. It was down the street and she was solo+acoustic. I brought a flask. Emperor X played too |
2 | Julia Holter
I was with a girl I'd been seeing for like 2 weeks and my car overheated on the way, awesome show though. pretty small venue and just full-band soaring greatness |
3 | Esperanza Spalding
went to a venue i hate submitting to but had to for espeez, wasn't disappointed. the whole theatrical play thing was a bit of an eyeroll but espeez is the boss and a great performer so. also played Emily's D+Evolution in a weird order |
4 | Ghost (SWE)
Awesome day, skated New Haven for most of the beautiful-ass day, ol bars and food, such a great performance as expected , and new/nice venue (college city music hall). got into a convo with 3 guys who were goin on and on about this "slut" they knew. Class |
5 | Mutoid Man
Had a stupidly late and wild night the night before, called out of work, went to this show all wired, could barely hear the vox which was disappointing . Fun though |
6 | Into It. Over It.
Ugh this was the day Prince died. There was tension in the air. TWIABP also played. Definitely dug/respected Into It Over It more after this show |
7 | Ought
Um if I remember correctly I skated around Boston beforehand and it fucking ruled. Then Ought fucking ruled. Right up front, singin along |
8 | Beach Slang
Um, went with my brother, singer guy was wearing a bowtie and a flower, played lots of covers, drank lots of screwdrivers, made lots of speeches. fun |
9 | Will Oldham
The rare Providence trip with now-girlfriend then-girl. I don't know much Oldham but yeah he pretty much ruled. Bitchin Bajas opened with very meandering ambient-psych-trance jams, but it was cool to see em |
10 | Infest
Aggh like seeing Infest wtf. I remember getting beers which felt like sacrilege and sitting on a bench while listening to the new james blake which felt a bit like sacrilege too but not really. Then entered the black-clothed and patch-covered mass of sweaty bodies that was Infest at Cambridge Elks Lodge. Eh vox were all over the place/inaudible, the sweaty blob that was the audience was not fun to be in. But it was crazy to here those old songs live. And I fucking met Chris Dodge and told him I dug Ancient Chinese Secret which may have been the highlight. Then I went to sleep at a friend's house and we watched Alpha Dog which was fucked. Went to an overcrowded diner after smoking a blunt the next morning and somehow didn't wanna curl up and die |
11 | Wussy
Boston skate etc etc. The rare upstairs Middle East show. I learned that the average Wussy fan seems to be least 40 years old and they don't draw as big as a crowd as they should |
12 | White Lung
4-person crew and I kinda just remember the walks to+from the car and going to Sunset Grille and White Lung playing some songs |
13 | Pinegrove
Awesome show to be a sub-5-minute bike ride away, they killed it. Super packed and it seemed like half of em knew every word. Definitely confirmed that for a band who just made their debut, they're something special |
14 | Boris
God this was like immediately after a weekend in Hampton Beach getting sunburnt and drunk and walking "sleeping" on a hotel floor with 10 other people. I remember going to an unexpectedly fancy-ish bar beforehand and literally feeling like a scorched piece of garbage. They played 'Pink' in its entirety but in a different order IIRC. Uh yeah they sounded stupid good. Pink smoke everywhere. I was pink too |
15 | Weird Al Yankovic
Spur of the moment stupidly impressive outdoor show. Very random and tons of little kids everywhere. Some lady fell down some stairs and sprained her ankle. Upped my ALppreciation like tenfold. Dude is a force |
16 | Haken
Sunset Grille beforehand per ushe then omg power outage during an opening band. Wound up chillin on the sidewalk for like 2 hours or so, Thank You Scientist couldn't play and ventured towards a basement, Haken played a set worth the wait though. Lots of wild technical proficiency and funny wizard dancing via the vocalist |
17 | Cobalt
NYC mission with cjbizzlebizzle. There was walking and trains and Other Half Brewing and beer aplenty and excellent hole in the wall pizza. Entered the almighty Saint Vitus for the first time and sipped Anthrax's ESB while Charlie Fell chugged cough syrup and went on to scream his guts out. Got accosted at a rest stop by an old man with a dog a gun a motorycle but no money. Got home at like 3 a.m. Def one of the highlight shows of the year. |
18 | Wolves in the Throne Room
Another show with the bizzle plus other friends. Discovered another new and impressive venue (Once Ballroom) and great nearby dumpling joint (Tasty Mo-mo's). Not too familiar with Wolves in the Throne Room but this was motivation to seek them out in the near future. great set, great openers, the smoke alarm went off from them burning wood or something. VeRy MeTaL |
19 | Preoccupations
~fka Viet Cong~ I remember I was all pissed because I had to succumb to uber-expensive/not worth it food from The Sinclair, then right beforehand I found out Dylan Rieder died which was really quite soul crushing. So I proceeded to drink a bunch of beers and ponder about life. This band was okay live, nice to hear the new material while it was still very fresh to me though. They closed with a ripping jam-out version of "Death" which I found very fitting |
20 | Angel Du$t
A return to the Sweaty Steam House/aka Cambridge Elks Lodge for another hardcore show, albeit less steam than Infest since it was October and not Infest. Dug their album quite a bit this year and as expected they were a hoot live, many singalongs and amusing dancing ensued. Turnstile headlined and their set was pretty insane |
21 | Napalm Death
A true 'wtf no way' show lineup: Napalm Death, The Black Dahlia Murder, Pig Destroyer. Pretty small venue too. Pig Destroyer destroyed, seeing Scott Hull live for the first time in particular was a treat. It had been like 9 years since I've seen BDM and I gotta say they're still killin it. On point and playing some old classics that made me go "ohhh yeah this band kinda rules". I wasn't sure what to expect of Napalm Death, old age and all, but lordy lord. Pretty amazing, wild/hilarious pit, singer is awesome with little political statements and reminiscing about OG grindcore days thrown in, people chanted "Fuck Trump" as it was soon after Election Day. This show was a treat |
22 | The Sounds
Played 'Dying to Say This to You' in full for a 10-year anniversary show, plus some more choice old goodies. Rolled up with big ol group of friends who are also all huuuge OG fans, and yeah this was some lyric-screaming magic nostalgic awesomeness. I felt like a middle-aged dude who would go see Journey or something. |
23 | Windhand
4-man crew, Once Ballroom and Tasty Mo-mo's, like 2 people back from the front, ears got absolutely decimated. Loud and wonderful despite some serious obnox by overzealous attendees whose actual fancy of the band I questioned |
