It would be a stupid and suicidal move to even do it, even if Trump gets impeached in the House then it goes to a full trial in the Senate, where Trump's legal team gets to subpoena and call anyone they want to testify under oath, and the Rs control ALL evidence that gets allowed. That means HRC emails, Spygate / Crossfire Hurricane, Uranium One, FISA abuse, media collusion with intelligence and DNC, the DNC servers, you name it - ALL of it will be allowed in. Corrupt Dems and Republicans will freak out, flip on each other, name names, and make deals and tons of people will go to jail. America itself has spied on every single country since the inception of wiretapping and has militarily and diplomatically interfered in hundreds of national and local elections, and has the best propaganda system on the planet. Crying about inconsequential Russian attempts to propagandize because you can't accept that HRC was awful and horribly unpopular with everyone just says you can't take an L.
Interesting summary you got there considering all those US citizens charged were for basic process crimes and had no collusion with Russia. None of the charges had anything to do with Trump or his campaign (and in fact many of them were committed while they were hired by Democrats years before Trump ran), and the only indictments levied against Russia were against nationals that will never, ever acknowledge them or answer them in a court, i.e., bullshit and worthless to score media Red Scare points, and make it look like there was a point to Mueller's waste of $40 million dollars. Facts are Mueller was just a naked attempt by intelligence, the Dems and the previous Administration to overthrow a US president with falsified charges to regain power. |

10.04.19 | everyone wants something different, but I think there are some basic guidelines that should be followed regardless of your party. MATURITY (I can't emphasize this enough). Be able to handle criticism, accept bad polls, take responsibility, apologize once in a while. UNITE PEOPLE. Find common ground. Treat members of Congress like functioning adults instead of being a playground bully and coming up with silly nicknames for everybody. Lead by uniting people instead of instilling fear and constantly telling your followers that the other party wants to destroy the nation. |

StrizzMatik
10.04.19 | His presence on Twitter, dismissal of PC culture (which is a cancer) and lack of a fake, affected decorum is one of the major reasons people like him and why he comes off as relatable to Americans. He's MUCH more honest than Clinton, Bush or Obama and actually comes through on his campaign promises, which is head-and-shoulders above 90% of his predecessors and other political elite who cynically manipulate you with emotional platitudes. Him going directly to the people instead of letting the media put a filter and a spin on his words is a big deal, and something they can't stand because they honestly believe they should have full control over everything you read, see and believe. |
StrizzMatik
10.04.19 | Coming from someone who voted for BHO in 2008 and opposed Bush 100%, Trump is the bull in the china shop that this country needed to get back to basics of putting our interests as a nation first, reject globalism, and expose the hypocrisy and duality of our entire political system for the entire ugly truth. You have to drastically upend the old order before enacting heavy reforms and actual change in the way we do things, which he has been largely successful doing. When your only other options are full-bore socialism or a return to Obama-era neoliberalism, QE and economic collapse, Trump is the only reasonable pick left. |
RolyPoly

Politicians don't treat each other with an ounce of respect anymore and because of that, we accomplish nothing and resort to childish twitter fights all day long. |
butt.
10.04.19 | And if his whole platform is "being honest and telling it like it is" then he has failed miserably. Fact checkers have never been more busy in their lives. As of August, Trump has publicly told over 12,000 false or misleading statements. |

People are doing better on average than they have done in a long time in this country, and the unemployment rate across the board is the lowest it's been since the 60s. No wars started under Trump, no international incidents, if it weren't for his Twitter persona and the collective meltdown of the left it would be the most boring Presidency in ages. Funny how you talk about the debt ballooning under Trump, but I bet you were totally fine with it when Barack Obama raised it an additional $12 trillion dollars right? Yeah, it really IS as simple as getting a better job. Unfortunately you also need skills, experience and value to get them, and they tend to frown on useless degrees too, bummer
- Despite your middle class doomporning, general unemployment is the lowest in decades (lowest in US history with minorities) and consumer optimism is the highest on record, that's a whole lot better than "marginal" improvement from 2008 under Obama that only came from QE and Fed currency manipulation. But yeah, I'm sure a crash is riiiight around the corner cuz angry media partisan talking heads said words
- Keep telling yourself the popular vote/mob rule means something in a Constitutional republic, all to cope with HRC's shit campaign and blowout EC loss
- Keep begging for a recession to stick it to Trump, like that isn't full-blown insanity or anything. Muh empathy indeed
- A trade war with China is 100% in our favor, they need us buying their crap to stay afloat, not the other way around. Their economy is in tatters from the tariffs, unlike ours, and tariffs were what the government used to finance its itself before the creation of the Fed, so that's a way of circumventing their influence and not having to rely on QE to prop up the economy like Obama did
- Saying "Fox News" in lieu of an actual argument is not a counterpoint lol
- We aren't the world police and Syria/Turkey/the Kurds aren't our problem, why do I even have to say that? We gave them millions in funding already to fight ISIS, and we have no dog in their fight. It's well past time to GTFO |

Does the incessant loophole using and lawyering up of Trump and his attempts to be just as difficult and blockaded as possible whenever he’s accused of any wrongdoing ever wear on you? Does the fact that the media is constantly using unverified, anonymous sources with no credibility to bolster their attempts to block and obstruct Trump's agenda, incite civil war and conflict regularly, and avoid any responsibility for their actions ever wear on you? I mean how many times do they have to be caught lying to your face, inciting violence on political opponents, censoring your content, carrying water for the elite, slandering anyone who disagrees with them, calling everyone racists, sexists and misogynists before you realize that they all HATE you, and by extension Trump, since he was elected by the People? I just truly don’t understand why you buy into bullshit from proven liars and frauds going back decades, unironically buy into establishment propaganda, and wouldn’t support attempts to hold them responsible for their lies? Why wouldn't you want your President to tell you directly what's happening himself via Twitter and public addresses, versus passing it through their neoliberal sanitized filter? It’s like the exact same rhetoric that the left and anti-Trumpers use about the rich, the government and the media being corrupt pieces of shit just fly out the window because they confirm your biases about the evil Drumpf.
Lol but seriously, you act as if he hasn't already been through vetting and dozens of internal investigations just running for President. Again you miss the point - the only reason things got better under Barack Obama's term was because of quantitative easing from the Fed propping up an economy that would have imploded otherwise. His job creation numbers are a joke and he is the only President in US history to not even achieve 2% GDP growth average over the course of his terms. Meanwhile, every economist and predictor said that everything would implode under Trump and it has done nothing but go up and up and up, added 4 million+ jobs, repatriating trillions of dollars in investment. Under Trump we are now a net energy exporter too. To say that he inherited this from Barack Obama is a fucking fallacy and shows you don't know jack shit about economics. The ACTUAL reason Trump's economy is doing so well is because he cut regulations and lowered the corporate/business tax rate from 35% to 21%, stimulating billions of dollars of investment. Not that I'm expecting any kind of nuance, knowledge or subtlety from someone who actually uses the term Trumptard unironically, but hey, you also think over-taxing rich people will work instead of just making them move operations overseas lol
@Egarran lol, tell me more about how the chief law enforcement officer in the country is somehow wrong for asking the head of a foreign country to investigate crimes committed by American citizens in their nation? Bro you really need to stop cherry-picking your correlations. The federal government doubled income tax rates in 1932 when FDR was in office and there was a tremendous increase in unemployment that lasted for years. Does that mean high taxes caused more unemployment? Not necessarily, but basic economic theory indicates that higher taxation leads to less consumption, which in turn means less employment due to reduced demand for consumer goods. There's also an even bigger wrench in the works that you're not considering, which is that wealthy people have the means to evade crippling taxation through lawyers, offshoring, etc. |
Sinternet
10.09.19 | wealthy people already have that means and use it regardless, the fact that a lot of those practices are easy is because the political class have a vested interest in keeping it that way so don't even attempt to close the loopholes
'basic economic theory indicates that higher taxation leads to less consumption'
any time someone says the words 'basic economic theory' together they're 90% guaranteed to be talking out their arse. this idea is most applicable at the average consumer level - that's the middle-class and working-class. i'd like to see you back up the idea that higher taxation on the highest earners reduces total economic consumption |

Here's the official Census Report. Believe it or not most people are doing better, despite what you're being spoonfed on Cable TV from both sides.
Are we in a perfect spot? No. But average income across the board is going up, pverty is down by 1.4 Million people between 2017 and 2018, and people do have the ability to move between economic statuses. |
JWT155
10.09.19 | From the report:
"The share of equivalence-adjusted aggregate household income in the lowest quintile, second quintile, and third quintile increased by 3.9 percent, 2.3 percent, and 1.5 percent, respectively, while the share of aggregate household income in the highest quintile decreased by 1.1 percent between 2017 and 2018."
In short, the highest Quintile (Highest earning bracket) saw a DECREASE in aggregate income between 2017 and 2018 while the lowest 3 Quintiles all saw significant increases. |

That is a problem, but climate change is a somewhat salvageable issue. Dead soldiers are not. |
JWT155
10.10.19 | Climate change is complicated.
Yes, I believe it's happening, but it's also more than fair to think tha it is not worth crippling our economy to solve an issue that we can only control 10-15% of, while the other 85% of the planet is going to continue to make it worse. Use the Titanic as an analogy, there's 20 subcompartments flooding with water. We're bailing out two compartments at full speed, meanwhile the other 18 are taking on more and more water at an even faster rate than before. We need collaboration across the board, but we need to be pragmatic about climate change, and not jeapardize our entire economy to solve an issue we alone can't control.
Solar and wind are great options to explore, but we simply don't have the battery technology to store that energy. If anything Nuclear needs to be expanded, and that's something many Democrats have completely left off the table.
Also, for a majority of third world countries, they will need to exponentially increase emissions in order to join our ranks. Who are we to tell countries in Asia, Africa, South America that may not have electric or running water in villages that they must remain in the third world? That they can't increase pollution to join the modern world? Fact is that we need the world to become more modern, and that means more pollution.
I've been to Asia multiple times, the pollution there makes the dirtiest places here look spotless. And it's only getting worse. I'm all for private businesses and consumers to push for more energy efficient alternatives.
I'm not for the Government making decisions that become costly and as always has adverse consequences usually worse than the problem it was trying to solve. |

Or even on social issues at the expense of domestic, environmental, or economic issues. What you're saying, oh great and academic and intellectual whaleboner, is that for them to have an opinion/spend any time talking about social issues is pandering when REALLY they should be talking about the things that YOU, 100% a rich white boy, care most about. YOU would never ask a candidate about your identity politics because in your mind, that's the "default" position around which every other political conversation should be organized. Your tiny, indoctrinated mind can't fathom what it must be like to be a member of a group that doesn't enjoy your political and economic privelege, so to you those concerns are tertiary to the REAL ones.
Having an opinion about issues of marginalized identity groups isn't pandering, and it's not virtue signalling, at least not in most prominent cases. It's being inclusive, empathetic, and open. If only people like whaleboner knew what that was like. |

Don't weasel out of that vomitous shit you spewed earlier. Nobody is saying that social issues should subsume economic ones. Exactly nobody. Pretending like that's the Democratic party's M.O. is a sad fucking excuse for your transphobia and privileged solipsism. Homo/transphobia isnt just hatred for the LGBT community, it can be discriminatory ideas or manifest as subconscious biases. When you say things like this or that black trans people are "not normal" I dont think it is at all a stretch to call you a trans/homophobe. As I said earlier this discriminatory system of america puts the lgbt community at higher risks of being lower class or homeless so framing LGBT issues are bourgeois makes little to no sense. |

10.11.19 | Normality is a matter of definitions. People get upset about normal/abnormal categorization because they translate into acceptable/unacceptable or some other value-judgment-containing statement. One possible definition is within 2 standard deviations, which is often used in laboratory medicine for examples. Depending on how big the group of people you’re talking about is, they may or may not fall within that range and may be normal or abnormal. But it doesn’t have to imply a value judgment. For instance obesity is common, and therefore under a volume based definition is normal, but isn’t positive |

In China's case, bringing up a lack of political freedom is a pretty transparently weak argument against the fact that they're providing better healthcare to citizens than the US is.
And in India's case, the fact that an impoverished country can implement a system that is weak but still succeeding where a country with more resources and higher per capita income is whining about not being able to should be a point of shame. Also, medical tourism to India is expected to be a $10B industry by 2020, so there's that. |

@SitarHero - I work for the Medicaid product, Government healthcare, there are plenty of options for low income individuals and people in need.
No, the system is not perfect and it is too costly, no one wants to see people with health problems in a place where they can't receive care, but the Government is notm going to make it more efficient or cheaper, and the minimal ways they would succeed would definitely lead to rationing and limited coverages. |

And everyone can poke fun and laugh at the US healthcare system, it is a mess in terms of insurance premiums and costs, but it is world class health care second to not a single country, and people flood here in droves from around the world to see American Doctors and to have procedures here, that's a fact. |

I know with the Medicaid program we administer members have essentially unlimited access to hospitals, ER and outpatient facilities, along with opioid programs and the like. My argument will never be that the health care system in the US is perfect, I think it's also more than rational to be skeptical on allowing the Government to take over an enterprise that would be larger than then top 20 companies in the US combined and that it would succeed or be better than what it is currently in terms of quality of care. |
Sinternet
10.16.19 | 'Really? You're telling me places like the UK and the DHS aren't a shit show? Please...'
no they're not. the nhs is an incredible system and medical debt in the uk is non-existent and prescriptions are extremely cheap.
do you want to know why there's protests all the time around it? because since 2010, when the conservative party regained power, they started habitually defunding it because many of their donors/puppet masters have a vested interest in promoting privatised healthcare. there is easily room in the national budget to replicate pre-2010 election levels of funding yet the tories are running it into the ground in order to sell off it's assets at the lowest price to their friends and outsource its services (which, if you want to talk about inefficiency, has transformed a system with incredible response times into a slog where staff are underpaid, overworked, and quitting by the day) |
SitarHero
10.16.19 | And no one is arguing against the quality of healthcare in the US, when you can afford it. The problem is how difficult it is to afford. |
JWT155
10.16.19 | "If that's a fact then it's an alternative fact. In 2017, approximately 345,000 people came to the US for medical procedures, compared to approximately 1.4 MILLION who left the US for medical procedures."
And what type of procedures are we talking about? what is the qaulity of care and procedures elsewhere? Sure thousands may got to Honduras for plastic surgery and cheaper procedures, how many of those procedures are higher risk of infection and death?
Certain procedures and care are much cheaper elsewhere, and that's an issue the US market needs to tackle, but the quality of care is most certainly not better elsewhere. People aren't leaving the country for better care, they're leaving for cheaper care, and that's something the US system needs to address and Medicare for All isn't simply going to solve. |

1. Pretend like other countries haven't figured it out to a workable degree (clearly they have. No system is perfect, but when you way the costs with the benefits, living in a system like Canada's is better for 90%+ of the people in it.)
2. Pretend like American health care is in some way superior to every other healthcare system (it's not, other than perhaps in oncology. Other countries such as Canada and EU states have a higher concentration of specialists and better funded research and equipment than the bulk of America)
3. Pretend like switching to a nationalized system is an unprecedented and radical idea. (It's not; other countries have figured it out, and the US is capable of mobilizing and reorganizing an entire industry)

ARM AL-QAEDA...Trump is arming Al-Qaeda...so he's taking money from a foreign government (Saudi Arabia), which violates the emoluments clause of the Constitution and you can DIRECTLY tie Trump to the genocide in Yemen. THAT is the case for impeachment, but establishment Democrats are too incompetent to make that argument. |

You think wealthy, billionaire oligarchs whose entire existence is predicated on keeping the status quo and lobbying politicians to do their bidding, would try to undermine Medicare for All at any cost, but even they couldn't do it.
NITF is right, if your argument that the field of statistical studies is flawed, you really are just (best case scenario) ignorant...it's not like a bunch of apolitical jackoffs crunch these numbers. Also, just so we're clear, Medicare for All may raise the public tax, but will eliminate the private tax you pay for healthcare, so you're net saving money and it's a net tax *cut* for the middle class. No premiums, no co pays, no deductibles, no middleman. if you want coverage around the edges for *supplemental* insurance, that's fine, but overall you're paying less money for more coverage and *everybody* gets covered, just like Biden, Buttigieg and all the other anti-healthcare centrists claim they want to do. |

10.18.19 | SpaceMan isn’t wrong that “studies say x or y” has become something of a meme. It’s usually used as an appeal to authority based on something read in a newspaper or article or maybe reading the conclusion of an abstract and then repeated. Rarely does someone quoting research in these types of conversations actually explain why they think that research is well conducted and valid, or even take time to read the whole study in the first place.
There is a crisis of reproducibility in my own field of medicine and my understanding is the problem is much worse in social “sciences”. There is also an inherent bias built into the way research is selected for funding and publication. This is not to give an anti-science rant but more to observe that I very rarely meet someone talking to me about research that has really considered it in a thoughtful way. To be fair to everyone, short of experts in a particular area of research, no one can be expected to have a truly deep understanding of most issues. For example I may treat many common conditions like hypertension and understand the broad strokes of the research involving them, but no where close to the understanding held by the PHD who specifically researches a particular subtype of hypertension in a particularly sub population treated with a specific family of drugs.
Something as broad as healthcare economics, especially studies on massive policy prescriptions are unlikely to be understood by the majority of people and perhaps shouldn’t be expected to. If it’s your field of study, more power to you. Even then, it’s not like such claims can be empirically tested until decades later.
On the flip side, I think you can’t just deny all research because it has limitations, if you object to some research you should be prepared to identify why. In general I hesitate to overestimate the quality of our individual or collective knowledge of pretty much any subject; time will make dinosaurs of us all, as it has to every generation that came before. |

IPCC sr15 of fall 2018 suggests we have about 10 years to manage ghgs before we might not be able to prevent an increase of 4c above pre industrial levels by the end of the century, which would create some seriously destructive conditions and cause millions of deaths especially in unfortunate areas like bangladesh, india... the "we have 12 years before we all die" thing is just a really uninformed, stupid, misinterpretation |

10.18.19 | I'm not sure if you understand what you just typed budgie, but essentially it says that we have a decade (less, since the study is from last year) to prevent a global catastrophe that will play out over the following 70 years.
No one is saying that the human race will die out over the next decade. What people ARE saying is that we have roughly a decade to prevent a global catastrophe.
But everyone currently on this thread will be dead anyway in less than 80 years, so why care? And if you want proof that you will be dead in 80 years or less I can probably link you studies on human life-expectancy in conditions of nutritional scarcity which we will almost certainly face due to climate change and crop failure. |

10.19.19 | circling back to the whole 'facts / statistics' epistemology topic: facts can be presented in a dishonest way. i mean this is one of the focal techniques of the news media: disjointing segments of fact from their broader, holistic context in ways which breed specious narratives to build upon. not to mention statistics are really only quantified representations of a process; if the process was apocryphal, or the internal validity is weak, then 'fact' loses its integrity. obviously i'm not saying ignore all data / scientific studies yada yada, but, at the same time, rigorous investigation is needed to really arrive at 'fact' a lot of the time. i think Space's point was pretty much this. |

10.19.19 | A couple more thoughts on what spaceman and Haliax were saying:
- the scientific method doesn’t purport to “prove” that something is true. If we hypothesize that something is true, the best we can do is show that we are x% confident within certain conditions that our hypothesis isn’t untrue (we reject the null hypothesis)
- it’s very difficult to do this for more than one very narrow claim at a time
- economic and financial forecasting is an entirely different process that relies on a number of assumptions and shouldn’t be mistaken for the same type of evidence
- an example of how even a very narrow scientific question can result in misrepresentation is as follows. There was a blood pressure/heart rate medication that was considered the gold standard for treatment of heart failure. A new study came out showing that a different drug had slightly superior mortality benefit and all over the country people had their medication changed. The problem was, the people doing the study didn’t use perfectly equivalent doses so the question then became whether or not the difference was simply due to using a higher dose. That type of uncertainty increases exponentially as more and more variables and complex questions are introduced
- TL;DR - be careful when assessing the value of research |

10.19.19 | Yep, I work as an aerospace engineer on jet engines, and its made me realize how ridiculous it is to assume finite element method, which is how we try to suggests damaged parts can last their lifetime in the air, is anywhere near the 'truth'. And since its based on physical sciences, which are way easier to support with tangible data then social-sciences like economics, I can only imagine how open to variation from a "true value" macroeconomic models are. |
Itwasthatwas
10.19.19 | In the 80s and 90s it was taught in medical and nursing schools that pain was a vital sign (lol) and that it was safe to prescribe opioids for benign causes of pain, like low back pain for example.
It was also thought to be ok to use paid “donor” blood at one point for transfusions (the 70s?) resulting in patients contracting hepatitis C. Centers that bucked the consensus (like Calgary, Canada for example), resulting in a lower risk pool, had a much lower percentage of cases contracted. |

Sinternet
10.21.19 | 'IQ is the most accurate measurement in psychology.'
ironically a very low iq statement, considering the masses of criticisms that modern psychology has for these tests. psychology can't yet agree on how to properly and impartially measure intelligence as a whole. iq tests heavily weight towards logic, leaving other forms of intelligence extremely underrepresented. until we can figure out how to define an objective ratio of all forms of intelligence, we can't begin to design a test that's all-encompassing. besides what iq test are we talking about here - Stanford-Binet or WAIS? each is insufficient enough to create an objective determination of a persons iq

10.21.19 | Wasn't the IQ test (Alfred Binet's test) invented originally so schools could see which kids would need more help in the classroom/had learning disabilities, not as a dick measuring contest? Well, it sure is a dick measuring contest now.
If your IQ is high, there's no real point in boasting about it anyway since your abilities in the academic fields and your critical thinking/decision-making skills will show what you can do in a way that actually matters. Have a high IQ? That's nice, but let's see what skills you have and what your ability to learn is like in practice. If you must boast, boast about your degree or a new discovery you made, or your actual accomplishments.
Boasting about IQ without accomplishments to back it up is like boasting about being a Sagittarius.
I'd rather talk to someone of average IQ who spent their life researching their field than some high IQ guy who does absolutely nothing productive, and honestly, I'd probably consider the former more intelligent than the latter where it counts.
So uh...the IQ test is to help slow kids, not for the fast kids to feel elite. |

I'm not going to disagree that it has some use in that it can usually make general predictions (with a sizeable margin of error i might add) and may be useful towards some particular applications - academic performance yes, because the way our academic structure is in most developed countries is geared towards better performance in these types of tests (although this is a pretty circular argument as a lot of the research that went towards these tests in the first place was conducted with a view towards predicting academic performance) - the hiring industry however is more geared towards aptitude tests.
my argument is not that these tests are useless, they have their merits and applications particularly in academic prediction, but far too often idiots who have heard the term once use it as a holy metric upon which to rank people (which honestly spurred me to actually look into this a while back) - these are mostly however the same people who peaked in high school and still quote their test results to people, aka the not really smart at the end of the day people |
hal1ax
10.21.19 | @itwas - yes it is a decent predictor for academic ability, and as we all know, there are strong positive correlations between level of education and income, yada yada, no one is disputing that the test has zero application. the contention is that it does very little to produce accurate metrics of general intelligence |
Sinternet

I don't disagree with this, but this is narrowing down a purposeful question to the point of insignificance, as it doesn't really tell us anything. yes in a vacuum you would want your child to be the most attractive, the most intelligent, the most happy, the most successful etc they can be. - what you should be asking is if you would pick a child with an iq of 90 that leads an average but happy life or a child with 110 iq who leads a successful life but who rarely feels fulfilled. that's a moral question worth asking that could give us a better understanding. i'd say results from this hypothetical would be fairly mixed |

Itwasthatwas
10.21.19 | I disagree sin, your reframed version is asking people whether they value intelligence and success over slightly less intelligence and happiness/fulfillment. Meri’s question specifically asks whether or not people think IQ measures something of value and really only that |
Sinternet
10.21.19 | but that's not really a useful question. obviously iq has some indications towards intelligence as I've already said, but this question absolves itself off any contextual factors - if you want to ask that question you need to find a better framework of doing it in, because you've given people an option of a or b where b is clearly better and there's little choice to actually make. once you pair it with other contextual factors, that are not only more replicable in natural variation, but also better at ascertaining what value people place on iq, you have more of a choice/dilemma protocol. |
Sinternet
10.21.19 | simply value doesn't exist in a vacuum, it relies on greater contextual factors, and attempting to understand value on a binary system where one is clearly better than the other doesn't really get you anywhere |

10.21.19 | Sint I had gone to sleep but quickly -
Because everyone would obviously choose more intelligence than less if all else were equal, the question is a binary one of value. If IQ truly didn’t measure something useful, you couldn’t choose between 70, 90, 110, or 130. Since we obviously all agree that it does measure something useful you can, but originally people were claiming that it was too flawed to be useful. It’s not about isolating the metric in a vacuum, just agreeing on a foundational point so that discussions about the topic start with more or less the same premise (real but somewhat limited utility). |

Trump got 2020 gift-wrapped on a platter and will likely flip the House and retain the Senate once all the fallout settles. Impeachment is DOA in the Senate if they or the SCOTUS don't dismiss it outright based on the weak / groundless articles themselves |
butt.
12.24.19 | "Lmao do people think this whole impeachment thing is actually popular or a good look for the left / Dems?"
they knew before beginning that impeachment would end up boosting trump's approval. just like clinton. the fact that they still went forward with it shows that they actually do have genuine convictions imo. if this was all just a "stunt" then they wouldn't have done it in the first place, since they knew the political cost going into it |

If we're talking principles then why did they not immediately deliver the articles to the Senate to attempt to remove the dIrE tHrEaT they think Trump to be?
@butt no chance? The Dems couldn't even get their entire Party to vote Yes, they've had defections and lost the moderate/independent vote bc of it and it's turned them into a laughing stock. If you're not worried about 2020 being a massive sweep for the Rs, idk if you're paying attention |

i don't agree with the impeachment proceedings being about some genuine conviction and commitment to truth or whatever over it just being a weak strategy. these are politicians... left or right, in the end do you think any of them would wittingly take appearing honest and ethical knowing it would hurt their party / voter base / prospective success, etc etc.? fuck no. |
StrizzMatik
12.24.19 | If they wanted to be strategic and smart about it they would have just censured him and be done with it, and create actual legislation to counter Trump's to say "regardless of what he does, we are committed to working for the American people". Instead they've made their entire platform into Orange Man Bad, let the crazy extremist 40% of their party call the shots, want to give illegals instant citizenship and voting rights, erase the border, and implement rampant socialism with no plan to pay for any of it, and they honestly think the average mom and pop are going to vote for all that? The Dems need to move to the center or they're going to die and splinter in 2020. Tulsi and Yang know this, and that's why they don't go the typical FUCK BLUMP / Orange Man Bad routine and actually focus on policy - they are going to be the future of the party, bet on it |
SitarHero
12.24.19 | "The Dems need to move to the center or they're going to die and splinter in 2020."
Yeah that was the problem with Hillary in 2016. Too far left. |
StrizzMatik
12.24.19 | The only reason they are trying to impeach Trump is because they know they cannot beat him in 2020, and because if Barr/Durham/Huber's investigations are completed, then a LOT of prominent people will go to jail or hang for treason, including many of the people screaming the loudest for impeachment. The illegal FISA warrants and FBI/DOJ/Five Eyes spying goes all the way up the chain to Obama and his whole upper Administration |

CookieFactory79
12.24.19 | While we are witnessing a beautiful year 2019 for the trend that some characterize globally of Pop Art (and it is rather justified), with very good albums released by Weyes Blood, Lana Del Rey, Angel Olsen, Thom Yorke ou James Blake (to name only them), Fka Twigs has managed to do even better than them by offering a grandiose modern album with all the ingredients that others possess but also because in innovation and creativity, it has gone much further than others. Technically, even if many know her influences : Bjork etc... I tend to think more about Kate Bush, mainly for the vocal performance, but also for the intensity and emotion she delivers. It is a masterpiece, which will most probably become a classic, because of all that I have heard this year, it is "the story" or "the stories" that have touched me the most and best written/interpreted, where we share the pain of an important relationship end and then how to relive and recover from it, it is an indescribable sadness where regret, depressions and loneliness mingle. In the moment of course on the fact that musically, the production is prodigious. I kill the suspense maybe too early, but we're far enough into the year to say that Magdalene will probably be the best album of the year as well as the cover too. rPS: Very happy to see that Future is the only vocal featuring, which still shows that he is probably one of the princes of the "urban blues" (call it what you want), by advising you to go listen again to Hendrixx or Save Me

12.26.19 | "Free healthcare"
Doesn't fucking exist
You can cry all you like about why universal healthcare should be a human right and yet not a single one of you can offer any solution to make this work without drastically raising taxes on everyone in the country, bankrupting the economy or basically recreating Obamacare, which was a disaster. It "works" in EU countries with a population the fraction of the USA's ONLY because a.) They heavily tax the population to pay for it b.) They have monoculture societies that are predominantly white and educated c.) Their economies are free market capitalist with insane deregulation that are arguably more free market than ours, and d.) Their defense is subsidized by the US and NATO
It's not "free", at all, and never will be
Before listening to idiots like Deathconscious, ask this:
- If healthcare is terrible in the USA then why does virtually everyone come here from other countries to get the highest-quality care? If socialized healthcare is better, then why do waiting lines exist, and why do people frequently die waiting for specialized care?
- If the USA isn't doing well, why are THOUSANDS jumping the border every year illegally and risking their lives to come here? Why are middle class wages consistently rising for the first time in decades?
- If socialism works well, then why are refugees constantly streaming from those countries to Western countries? Why does every socialist country and economy inevitably fail or produce dictatorships?
- If Bernie-style socialism is the way to go and popular with Americans, why is he peaked at #3 behind snorefests like Biden and Warren, who are far more center / moderate, and why do the vast majority of Americans dislike him and his political platform?
- If Trump's so fucking bad, then why is our country doing so well with him as President? If he is actually guilty of the many, many accusations of high crimes that have been levied against him, why were zero of them included in the articles of impeachment?
Maybe, just maybe, you've been indoctrinated by socialist hacks and activist professors who simply hate America and what it stands for. Maybe, just maybe, you're told to hate Trump because he's an actual threat to the status quo of those who run things. Maybe, just maybe, the people who tell you to trust the word of major media companies and alphabet agencies - the same ones who get caught *lying constantly* - were cynically manipulating you into buying into blatant propaganda. Maybe their *entire goal* is to divide everyone by race, religion, sex, politics, class, gender, etc. to prevent you from finding common ground with those on the other side and realizing the con being played on all of us? |

12.26.19 | I can tell you as someone that lives, works, and studies in neoliberal Austria (and the neoliberal EU for that matter), that if you were to go up to literally any random person and said that having public healthcare is either socialist or an impediment on ones liberty regardless of whether they are on the right or left, they would laugh and kindly tell you to fuck off. Literally no one in Europe aside from the most elite of the elite would ever consider publically saying that private healthcare is a reasonable idea, because everyone knows that it is absolutely tyranical and a scam. The only reason that around half of the US opposes it solely because of generations of propaganda from the right, and the fact that most Americans have probably never lived in a country where they had assured access to healthcare.
This issue is especially potent for me, as I have had family members and acquaintances with family that have died because of lack of healthcare or fear of treatment because of the threat of medical debt. If you aren't onboard with national healthcare, kindly fuck off, but please be mindful that your support of the status quo is keeping millions upon millions of people living in constant fear that wouldn't otherwise if private healthcare were either eliminated or strictly controlled. |
Itwasthatwas
12.26.19 | The problem with private healthcare is that it’s very hard to align profit motive with delivering high quality and accessible care. Current attempts make the system more expensive through administrative bloat.
The problem with public health care (and good private insurance plans) is the moral hazard of divorcing consumers from cost.
The theoretical benefit of private competition improving care doesn’t seem to play out in reality due to state by state oligopoly formation similar to the problem with big tech.
Ultimately I view population health as the most valuable national resource and therefore worth funding as a public service, similar to education. The caveats to that are that it requires responsible leadership that cares for safeguarding the interests of the existing citizenry and deep social cohesion to be sustainable. |

12.26.19 | -People come here to receive healthcare services because we have good doctors, the quality of care is irrelevant to the financial portion of the discussion.
-People come to America because it's next door and much better than starving to death or being killed. America is most certainly doing well relative to second- and third-world countries. That's a strawman when it's really about America not doing well relative to its potential.
-There aren't mass amounts of socialist emigrants swarming the U.S., this is discussed to drum up fear a la Islamophobia. Those who are coming are generally Eastern Europeans also in dire situations.
-You answered your own question, because they are more moderate.
-Our country isn't doing well, we still have tens of thousands of people dying of starvation, we're personally and nationally drowning in debt, and the burgeoning generations' earning potential is not keeping pace with cost of living and inflation. The only economic metrics that look good for us are unemployment (misleading when we are at an all-time of high of seasonal and unstable work and our earnings are not keeping pace per the above) and those that track the ever-improving situations of the wealthy. |

12.26.19 | The people dying are the working lower-middle class because they can't afford to access their coverage. Many are financially devastated by time a plan kicks in. I'm fine with what you say in theory but it doesn't work like that in actuality.
Took my son to get a swab because we though he had strep throat ($85). Swab came back negative so they expanded the testing to some other things they suspected. All came back negative so they just gave him some Amoxicillin ($8) and said "come back if that doesn't clear it up". Final bill = $1385. A minor medical occurrence does not translate to minor and manageable out-of-pocket expense in this country. Granted if I have another 4-5 such instances in a year insurance will begin to pay. |

I actually work for a specialized Medicaid program and spend an incredible amount of time haggling with service providers and insurances. I honestly lose it when exposed to the depths of insanity within our healthcare system.

12.26.19 | Yeah Explode, I analyze high-dollar hospital claims in my current role, so I know where you are coming from and I know this subject. On a national scale, people would rather work to find a workable explanation for why things are the way they are than identify a workable way to improve them. This baffles me. Also, those European taxes at least go towards paid-for college and graduate degrees, as well as many other things... America works very hard NOT to invest in its citizens, when doing so would have an actual GDP return. we can't even do capitalism right anymore. The reality is that things could be better and cheaper, and we shouldn't be bending over backwards to state otherwise when it isn't even in our best interest |
WatchItExplode
12.26.19 | Agreed on all fronts shark. I don't even really do high dollar claims, but I'll watch two dozen professional hours go into a claim for DME (medical equipment like a walker) worth $1000 and drag out over six months when the DME is intended to reduce the individual's reliance on paid caregivers. Insanity. |
Itwasthatwas
12.26.19 | When you consider that type of wasted system overhead multiplied millions of times over, you can see why it’s near impossible to even accurately determine the cost of one doctor’s visit or procedure. If we don’t even know what basic things cost, how do you then reform the system, especially when it’s so fragmented. Nearly an impossible problem to solve.
Every other system has its own unsolvable problems though so we shouldn’t confuse just adapting one of those to the US for a viable solution. Proposing that we do so oversimplifies the nature of the problem. |

12.27.19 | "Also, those European taxes at least go towards paid-for college and graduate degrees, as well as many other things... America works very hard NOT to invest in its citizens, when doing so would have an actual GDP return"
This is another fantasy. Countries like the UK not only have tuition fees, but also requirements that you have to meet to be admitted.
It ends up being a tax cut for the richer/smarter people and a tax hike for the poor because the poor don't go to college anyway and subsidize the cost for those who do.
|
GhostB1rd
12.27.19 | The US sends way to many people to college as it stands. This is because of government guaranteed student loans, so some random person off the street can get into a school with no prospects of repaying the loan (e.g. majoring in gender studies) and the government will back it.
We need way fewer kids going to college and more going into tech schools, trade schools, or just staying with their high school degrees. |

There are tradeoffs for everything (including high taxes funding that education), but there's a reason that, for example, there are so few black doctors in America. Investing in our citizens can be both economically and morally justifiable, but we have these weird bootstrap fantasies instead, that in reality just consist of those with pre-existing opportunities succeeding. We don't create much accessible opportunity at all and it will add up eventually. |
