Massive Attack Ranked
1Massive Attack
Mezzanine

Utterly absorbing. From the opening bassline of Angel to the final climax of Group Four, this album sucks you in to its world, and for an hour you makes you forget about everything else. Full of moments of beauty (Teardrop, Black Milk), dark atmosphere (Man Next Door, Inertia Creeps) and the occasional explosion (Angel, Dissolved Girl), the genius of the way the album juxtaposes the three. A Masterpiece.

Blue Lines

The perfect laid back album. Full of little details and yet also full of space, as is possibly best demonstrated by the title track. It sounds a little dated in places (Be Thankful for What You've Got in particular), but is overall a pleasure to listen to.

Protection

I find it difficult to make my mind up about Protection, because while a lot of it is great, there are is also quite a bit of forgettable material on here, including Weather Storm, which is great as background music, but could have done wth being a lot shorter, and the Light my Fire cover which is, quite frankly embarrasing. However, Karmacoma, Sly and the title track are some of my favourite Massive Attack songs and overall there is enough great stuff to outweigh the less good stuff.

100th Window

I disagree with the idea that this is just Mezzanine part 2, it really sounds pretty different. It's altogether colder, the deep bass has been replaced with layers of dreamy ambience and clicking beats. It's far harder to get into than any other MA album, and probably not as rewarding as the first three, but it does have a very nice atmosphere to it. If Mezzanine was the middle of the night, then 100th window is the early hours of the morning.

Heligoland

Certainly not a bad record, its just a bit patchy, and kind of schizophrenic as well. Psyche and Flat of the Blade are nothing particularly special, and Saturday Come Slow sounds truly out of place. Still, Paradise Circus is up with their best stuff.
