| Ignimbrite's 2014 (extra based edition) | 20 | | Behemoth The Satanist
I've never really liked these guys. This album changed that. The closer is the best
thing ever. | 19 | | Yellowcard Lift a Sail
Fuck you all. | 18 | | Pet Slimmers of the Year Fragments of Uniforms
Instrumental post-metal done extremely right. | 17 | | Nero di Marte Derivae
It's literally Ulcerate with way more post-metal than death metal and weirder
vocals. It's also almost fantastic enough to make the wait for the next Ulcerate
album bearable. The drummer is awesome. | 16 | | The Great Old Ones Tekeli-Li
Post-metal/black metal combinations have a tendency to be boring, unoriginal,
cheesy, or all of the above. This is none of those things. | 15 | | This Will Destroy You Another Language
This Will Destroy You combine the beauty of the self-titled with the
experimentalism of Tunnel Blanket. This is easily their best album yet. | 14 | | Locktender Rodin
This is the best straight-up post-metal you'll hear all year. | 13 | | 68 In Humor and Sadness
I honestly don't think that post-Long Live Josh Scogin is even capable of
disappointing me. | 12 | | Dead Congregation Promulgation of the Fall
Riffs. | 11 | | Darkspace Dark Space III I
Between this and Gravity, I've been pretty thoroughly convinced never to become
an astronaut. | 10 | | Panopticon Roads to the North
Lunn combines the songwriting of Collapse with the experimentation of Kentucky
and the aggression of Social Disservices and excises most of the weak parts of
each of those albums. His best yet. | 9 | | Ben Howard I Forget Where We Were
Howard strays from the straightforward, if really enjoyable, indie folk stuff of his
debut to make something a lot darker, more atmospheric, and more unique. | 8 | | Ghost Brigade IV - One with the Storm
It's the exact same thing as their last few albums. It's also just as good as, if not
better than, their last few albums. | 7 | | Damascus When Last We Met
In the post-rock realm, sleepmakeswaves may have disappointed me this year,
but Damascus did not. God damn. | 6 | | Downfall of Gaia Aeon Unveils the Thrones of Decay
It's a lot like their debut, but dirtier, darker, and infinitely more evil. Post-metal
and crust punk influences are toned down in favor of a heavier black metal tint,
and they end up sounding a bit like a filthy, crusty Altar of Plagues at points. And,
my friends, it works. | 5 | | Gates Bloom and Breathe
stupid twinkly whiney crescendocore bullshit | 4 | | Old Man Gloom The Ape of God II
This slot also includes the other The Ape of God, but I'm listing this one because I
have a slight preference for it. They both come incredibly close to topping Seminar
II as their best work, and are undoubtedly the best thing Aaron Turner has been
involved in since ISIS broke up. SUMAC is sounding pretty cool, though. | 3 | | Thou Heathen
Dankest, heaviest, most oppressive album of 2014. The "We are the stone that starts the avalanche!" bit in Free Will
might be the best piece of music I've heard this year. | 2 | | Jakob Sines
It isn't the perfect album that Solace - or, arguably, Cale:Drew - was, but god
damn if this isn't further proof that Jakob are the greatest non-Canadian post-rock
band in existence. Everyone else should quit. Damascus can stay, though. They're
pretty chill. | 1 | | Saor Aura
This is the one 5 I've given this year. Aura is beautiful, brutal, aggressive,
emotional, and cathartic. Atmospheric black metal does not get better than this.
To think that this guy was involved with Falloch at one point... | |
Ignimbrite
12.19.14 | Honorable mentions (no particular order):
Hexis - Abalam
Hierophant - Peste
Mors Principium Est - Dawn of the 4th Era
Insomnium - Shadows of the Dying Sun
Fen - Carrion Skies [this was pretty close to being on here]
Irreversible - Surface
Taylor Swift - 1989
Anathema - Distant Satellites
Ahamkara - The Embers of the Stars | Thibs
12.19.14 | I like a lot of these | Relinquished
12.19.14 | 3 4 are my 1 2 | Ignimbrite
12.19.14 | Yeah, spots 2-4 are extremely close at this point. They're all spectacular albums for completely different reasons. Saor is pretty firmly ahead of all three for me, though. | Relinquished
12.19.14 | SUMAC's gonna be incredible, it's already sounding like the sum of its parts | oltnabrick
12.19.14 | probably the best 2014 list yet | Gnocchi
12.19.14 | Thank fuck for Rodin | ScuroFantasma
12.19.14 | Great list man | Artuma
12.19.14 | dat top 4 :] | xenocide.
12.19.14 | 6 is my 5; 11 is my 8.
Also liked 2, 8 & 17 very much. The description for 17 is spot on. | Gameofmetal
12.19.14 | 1 is yes | Ignimbrite
12.19.14 | The Awakening is SotY. | Gameofmetal
12.19.14 | I prefer the title track personally | RogueNine
12.19.14 | Freaking forgot to check 18 again. That needs to happen. | Ignimbrite
12.21.14 | 18 is great, it's nothing even remotely new but it's pulled off so well that you just can't even be bothered by it. | Judio!
12.21.14 | Cool list man, though I still really need to check out 2 and 3. Have you jammed the new Musk Ox yet? | Ignimbrite
12.21.14 | I haven't. I don't think I've ever heard anything from them, actually... Should I start with the new one? | cryptside
12.21.14 | Awesome list man, I have to check 18. I love the new Panopticon, and I'm psyched that Hexis was even on the honorable mentions. It's SO good. | Ignimbrite
12.21.14 | Thanks man! Yeah, it's the most straight-up evil thing I've heard all year. If it weren't such a one-mood type of album it'd definitely be on the list itself.
Also, if I were to redo this I'd work in the new Deadwood album, and maybe the new Baulta album as well. Both are fantastic. | Snake.
12.21.14 | 5 is fire | Judio!
12.21.14 | "I haven't. I don't think I've ever heard anything from them, actually... Should I start with the new one?"
Yeah I'd say so. They only have two albums, but their new album Woodfall is definitely superior imo. Not exactly sure if neofolk is your thing but you should jam nonetheless. | Ignimbrite
12.21.14 | I fucking love neofolk, man. I'll jam that. | cryptside
12.21.14 | Ignimbrite, have you listened to The Banner's new LP? | Wolfhorde
12.21.14 | You give that Acres' EP a listen? I figure that should be up your alley, too. Sweet digs on that Downfall of Gaia album btw. | Deviant.
12.22.14 | Rodin is so so good | Ignimbrite
12.26.14 | damn son, that Musk Ox album is the absolute shit | Judio!
12.26.14 | Told ya ;) | cryptside
12.26.14 | Yeah it rules. Judio knows all. | teamster
12.28.14 | Good job. Agree with some of these. I will have my list up and ready soon. Have you checked out Moanaa - Descent? Arguably my AOTY. | Ignimbrite
12.28.14 | I jammed their demo a couple years back, but I had no idea they released something else. I'll check it out. |
