08.01.22 | "I will concede that Beyoncé's image and example has made her a force of empowerment"
i'd say she is indeed a revolutionary artist and this is precisely why. she's like the textbook example of female empowerment for a staggeringly large amount of people. she's far bigger than her music. |
Supercoolguy64
08.01.22 | She got Tommy Wright III a feature on her new album or something so she’s alright in my book |

08.02.22 | "Isn't the entire idea of Beyonce that she's the safest most palatable pop r&b star ever? The ultimate status quo"
a bit harsh, in her late career i'd say beyonce is more political and provocative than the average mainstream popstar |
fogza
08.02.22 | "Is she a "revolutionary" musician? No... but she is a depressing endpoint of bullshit culture."
probably also a little harsh |
TheSpirit
08.02.22 | i think you're asking this question to the wrong audience |

08.02.22 | Being super palatable is probably harsh and little inaccurate, being a depressing endpoint of bullshit is a very slight exaggeration but no that harsh imo |
foxblood
08.02.22 | I remember that stupid 'to the left' song around 2006, ever since then I have never heard one of her songs anywhere except for her garbage super bowl performance. it seems like she's had no hits since 2006, that I've heard at least. she's much more of a celebrity than anything it seems |
TheSpirit
08.02.22 | she's had a ton of hits since then. her biggest songs all came after 2006 |
Calc
08.02.22 | people are conflating her with her fans' annoyingness and that's definitely an exaggeration. there are also loads of pop artists with more "generic" and "palatable" music out there. swift, styles, grande, gomez, mars, lupe, adele etc so calling her the safest or the most palatable is just wrong. but yeah this site is the wrong one to ask this question to for sure |
fogza
08.02.22 | "her biggest songs all came after 2006"
totally. She became a megastar in the interim, like I can't imagine anyone not having heard "If I were a boy" or "Halo" or "Love on top" or "Formation" etc etc |
fogza
08.02.22 | i'm not a huge beyonce fan but you have to give her some respect, i mean she's an incredible live performer. also, i saw the impact "black is king" had over here in south africa, it was a big deal. |
IsisScript80
08.02.22 | "i think you're asking this question to the wrong audience"
There are numerous reasons I could point to, as to why her overall cultural presence and what it signifies is a far greater negative than a positive, and whilst my stance sounds hyperbolic, it's one I firmly believe in. But if the question here is aimed at "the wrong audience", I'd have to ask, who exactly are the "right" audience?

SomeCallMeTim
08.02.22 | pretty much what fogza said, I don't care for her music too much but she's undeniably an incredible performer |
foxblood
08.02.22 | 'like I can't imagine anyone not having heard "If I were a boy" or "Halo" or "Love on top" or "Formation" etc etc'
idk any of these at all, not even the names. I know she's big on the internet but I have found her music very easy to avoid in real life since 2006 when I couldn't avoid it at all. |
rabidfish
08.02.22 | totally. She became a megastar in the interim, like I can't imagine anyone not having heard "If I were a boy" or "Halo" or "Love on top" or "Formation"
I don't know any of those songs lol. I remember rating Lemonade when it came out and immediately forgot about it. I only know the "get married right NOW" song |
fogza
08.02.22 | "idk any of these at all, not even the names"
ok but just because you don't know them doesn't mean they weren't mega hits |
Calc
08.02.22 | "There are numerous reasons I could point to, as to why her overall cultural presence and what it signifies is a far greater negative than a positive, and whilst my stance sounds hyperbolic, it's one I firmly believe in."
i hope these reasons don't sound like they're coming from a 4chan board that's all I'm sayin
|
TheSpirit
08.02.22 | "I'd have to ask, who exactly are the "right" audience?"
Okay I guess let me clarify by saying obviously anyone is open to answer whether or not she is a revolutionary, but seeing as how she makes music predominately for black women, I’m sure if this question was posed in a place where the predominate userbase was black women, we would be seeing much different answers. |

AmericanFlagAsh
08.02.22 | I praise her for always switching up her music and taking risks and she seems to genuinely enjoy making music for making music, not just to be big, at least for self titled and after
However, she is more revolutionary as a person than her music is to music |
foxblood
08.02.22 | 'ok but just because you don't know them doesn't mean they weren't mega hits'
I know, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying it seems like post 2006 her popularity is mostly on the internet because I've managed to not hear anything from her since irl |
TheSpirit
08.02.22 | "is an industry standard revolutionary?"
she's an industry standard b/c she made what she did the standard, not the other way around |

Yes, I too, would hope not.
"Okay I guess let me clarify by saying obviously anyone is open to answer whether or not she is a revolutionary, but seeing as how she makes music predominately for black women, I’m sure if this question was posed in a place where the predominate userbase was black women, we would be seeing much different answers."
I'm sure it would too, but if you're talking about targeted demographics, a successful artist appealing to said demographic would lead to a significant portion becoming fans (in the case of the "Beyhive", a scarily intense fanship). Therefore, I think a non-partisan forum, free of wider threat of being vilified for any kind of dissenting opinion, is a better place to discuss a question like this, because it quickly becomes polarizing one way or another. |
fogza
08.02.22 | "I know, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying it seems like post 2006 her popularity is mostly on the internet"
are you honestly suggesting the single ladies video wasn't fairly ubiquitous on tv screens? perhaps you are just completely avoiding any sort of popular culture stuff, which is fair enough, but that doesn't mean that video wasn't every fucking where, and is in fact one of the most iconic music videos I can think of |
AlexKzillion
08.02.22 | i'd reckon a lot of you prob have heard a lot more beyonce music than you might think but didn't realize it was beyonce because her music completely lacks identity if you strip it of beyonce's visual appeal
the insanely expensive and high end music videos and stage shows prob play more into her appeal than the actual music for even her most die hard fans. she's as much a visual artist as she is musician |
TheSpirit
08.02.22 | i'm not a big beyonce fan but some the takes in this thread are fucking wild lmao |
