this tournament excluded a ton of moot point sputcore (the national, dillinger esc plan, opeth, kate bush etc.) because it's boring to repeat the same major artists every year. this category included ulcerate, who had been in since the first tournament and failed to make gains every time
there were a load of core acts (callous daoboys, loathe, invent animate, static dress etc) because for better and most certainly worse, that shit sucks in a large proportion of our demographic and it seemed appropriate to try to cater to em. given how little the main voting crowd has changed, i'm happy to chalk this up as an miscalculation, but it wasn't engineered to come at the cost of Other Metal Acts
tl;dr if metal flopped this year, it's because y'all don't care about metal enough (which is something i have zero issue with). this is otherwise the most diverse and arguably best second and third round roster we've seen to date (a couple of loose cannons excepted) and although there'll certainly be refinements to make next time around, i don't think expanding the field and culling a few obvious titans has been a big loss this year
