national covid stats have gone through the roof and we have another state of emergency from today and summer is ruined and it'll take even longer before chill international tourists are allowed back in and i am pissed af |
Colton
08.02.21 | yeah the covid aspect seems poorly thought out. I also feel creeped out learning about the women’s volleyball teams being fined for wearing shorts (and also super vindicated cause I questioned why they have to dress the way they do to my family as a kid and they reacted like I was a mega creep and said obviously it’s because that’s what they want to wear, well fuck you uncle mike evidently no it’s not) and the olympics are also super exploitative in general and the amount of money they make relative to what the athletes get paid is insane, and also let Simone Biles take her ritalin god dammit
think that’s it for now |

08.03.21 | 3. Big Syke - Hmm. On the one hand it's hip-hop, which you guys know I generally don't like. One the other hand, it's relatively mellow (at least in the first and third verses), and the guy had a deep, manly voice, which I appreciate. (Presumably, this is Big Syke.) I have "no love" for the butt muncher who does the middle verse (presumably Mopreme?), but I'll give it a 2.5 based on the Big Syke verses. |

08.10.21 | 10. Envy: Fingerprint Mark - I'm not TOTALLY opposed to shouty vocals but they're a hard sell on this. The alternating earnest voice with the shouting at the end makes me uncomfortable. I like the underlying guitar line at 0:37 though, and the (albeit unremarkable) shift at 1:03. I'm gonna go with a 2.4 here as well. |

Listened to lots of 1992 Spanish stuff and didn't really find anything all that good. Everytime I heard something cool, I realised it was a Cuban artist. This rec is honestly very mid. There was an awesome flamenco song but my Spanish is limited / non-existent and I was worried some of the song titles on the album looked a bit racially insensitive. |

Mona Lisa Naeratus (song) - Propeller (band)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kVPwk9wNlU
Soviet Union (Estonia) 1980
Punk
Hardcore enough to spark riots and get the band banned (and punk music in Soviet-era Estonia in general) for a while. Of course it was anti-Soviet as balls. Fittingly the gig took place during a football match right after the Olympics had ended. (pic of gig - https://p.ocdn.ee/59/i/2015/9/21/bhplwdqw.n2b.jpg - believe me, this was punk as all hell for a 1980 Soviet Union gig, it was also recorded but all recordings were seized and destroyed by Soviet authorities)
(Moscow Discow kicks ass too though) |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.11.21 | updated, cheers both!
kkarron I can't find that band in the database and their official releases all have later release dates for reasons that I presume derive from that story lmao - cool shit, just so you know why the artwork/title are off for now |
kkarron
08.11.21 | Yeah, they don't really have official releases (apart from that one compilation made 15 years later) but are absolutely a local cult band. Punk as it should be - got out there, made their statements, disrupted an authoritarian society (the authorities were super fucking worried because people started burning soviet flags (understandable) and threw carrots and cabbages at people (wat?)) and never compromised. |

Divaman
08.12.21 | 12. Marilyn Mazur - Pretty female vocal, sounds a little like young Joni Mitchell before her voice deepened. Very new age. Some light bongo just kicked in. Now it's more jazzy. Seems very influenced by Joni. 3.4 |

08.13.21 | 13. Ichiko Aoba: Pilgrimage - What I've heard from Aoba has been the definition of mid, so I wasn't looking forward to this. However, it totally surprised me - unlike anything I've listened to from her before and quite beautiful. 4 |

11. I Know, You Know, I Know - this is really nice. 3.5

13. Pilgrimage - Gorgeous track. 4.3 |
Divaman
08.13.21 | 13. Ichiko Aoba - Happy but quiet acoustic track, with ethereal female vocals. Yeah, it's a little meandering, but it's also pretty nice. 3.6 |
fogza
08.14.21 | 14. Anathema: Lightning song - Competent, clean, but too mawkish for me. 2.7 |
Divaman
08.14.21 | 14. Anathema - Pleasant picked guitar followed by some strings. Female vocalist with a pretty voice. I like it more than not. 3.2 |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.14.21 | 2. I'm So Green - Kinda fun, mostly unremarkable ig. Quaint caper hmm 3.2
3. Ain't No Love - I'm struggling to take this seriously but also it's making me quite happy and I'm (???) vibing so yeah sure 3.4 cosy
4. I'm With You - Hooray for dated midtempo prom rock. Mmm. Not sold on this chorus (either the melodies are weak or the delivery is overbearing or both) but the rest of it holds up and the song is ok ig 3.1
5. Olympic Hymn - This is an Olympic anthem. Epic. 3.5
6. Moskow Diskow - Yeah now we're talking. This overstays it's welcome a bit, but I wasn't dancing so this opinion doesn't count. Banger. 3.7
7. Individuation (Telos) - Idk about medieval and this feels a lot more like sludge/prog than post to me, but it does riff respectably hard. Oh I guess it went post. The riffs were better but 7:20 also riffs. Good shit. 3.6
8. Efimera - Aww yay, lovely song! Vocals are a bit laboured for my liking but this doesn't detract too much. Postive vibrations! 3.9
9. On A Night Like This - Lana del Rey's weekends are the first 2 minutes of this video on loop. Song is okay, makes me v nostalgic even though I've never heard it before. It was a long time ago but not so long ago. Hmm. 3.3
10. Fingerprint Mark - Haven't revisited this album way too long, but this song slaps and is definitely my preferred mode of Envy (although it integrates their post-rock shiz p impressively for largely a straight-up skramz track). 4.0
11. I Know, You Know, I Know - I can't tell if this is mildly cool or deeply uncool but the song is mid ig. 2.5
12. Sardine - Exquisite. More of this. 4.3
13. Pilgrimage - fuck, this takes me back to the two weeks of pure sputstress that followed the album dropping. Good times, lovely track. Album is more about the backend for me but this defs gets the ball rolling. 3.9
14. Lightning Song - Anathema used to be my favourite band and I got into them just before Weather Systems dropped. Even back then, it was a highlights-only deal for me, and I'm still not sold on the corny crescendocore that makes up its middle run. This is the best of those songs but hmmmmmmmm still lower tier Anathema for me 3.2

08.15.21 | 15. Funeral for a Friend - Some screamy guy, whose screams eventually turn singy. Frantic percussion and electric guitar. Kind of decent when he sings on the choruses. Verses are a little formless. I'm thinking 2.8 |
fogza
08.16.21 | 16. Propeller: Mona Lisa Naeratus - I'm more team post punk, I mean this is very basic straight up punk. But I love the story and the song is kinda fun. Maybe rating a little higher for the Olympic connection. 3.4 |

16. Mona Lisa Naeratus: rocks + great backstory, cheers kkarron 3.6
17. The Feather / Free the Eagle: this has an atmosphere to it, quite vibing it. oh lmfao they built up an engrossing celtic aesthetic only to drawl "free the eaaaaaagle" over it in ostensible american accents? instant minus points. would have rated it solidly as an instrumental 3.4

ArsMoriendi
08.22.21 | "Ain't No Love"
Hip hop with some of the 90s R&B guitar. Damn his voice is deep. I don't mind this, but it's kinda boring.
3/5
"I'm With You"
Those two ladies on the left on the album cover are the same person. This is pretty typical 80s new wave. Belinda's got a nice voice, so I wish this grabbed me more, but it's no "Vacation" and it's certainly not all I ever wanted.
2.9/5
"Olympiakos Ymnos"
This is iconic. Good job composing this Spiros. Kinda tiresome around the 3-minute mark though. Very marching band.
3.5/5
"Moskow Diskow"
What is this French Kraftwerk? Kinda typical of this era of synth-pop, though it's fun regardless. Also, these guys are apparently Belgian, not French.
3.4/5
"Individuation (Telos)"
Metal riffs. Only a minute and a half in and I'm already ready for this 10-minute song to end. Spacious post-metal, and now some epic bone-crushing slow riffs... man it's only at the 6-minute mark? Was that a false ending 8 mins in? Ugh, why not just actually end? Finally.
2/5
"Efimera"
Pretty vocals. The backing music is whatever. That guitar will not commit to being part of this song, it keeps popping its head in and immediately leaving. This was fine.
3.1/5
"On a Night Like This"
A dance-pop song that was probably playing in a ton of clubs when it first came out. A lot of club drugs were done while this song was playing, it's definitely that kinda o vibe. I think I'd need to be at a club to appreciate this though.
3/5
"Fingerprint Mark"
No. The floaty part is less no than the rest of this, but I still don't like it much. Back to no.

08.27.21 | 27. Rush: Passage to Bangkok - Rush is one of those bands that gets thrown around alot in conversation on this site. I've never really heard much of their stuff, or if I have, it's never registered. This song illustrates why - despite all the stuff going on, I get zero excitement from it. 2.5 |

08.27.21 | oh yeah there are 31 days lmfao okay we're covered now cheers gang |
Divaman
08.27.21 | Tbh, while I like it, it's not my favorite Rush song either. But by Johnny's rules, I was limited to something from the 2112 album, and I didn't want to give you the song "2112" because it's 20 minutes long.
Listen to "The Spirit of Radio", or "Red Barchetta" or something. Maybe they'll explain why people like Rush a little better. |

08.27.21 | I'm an atypical Rush fan myself. Rush is mostly known for their expertise with their instruments, whereas I usually listen to music for hooks and vocals (and sometimes for power). But at some point, Rush just clicked for me. |
Divaman
08.27.21 | Unfortunately, I never saw them live. |

08.28.21 | 28. Haru Nemuri: Boku wa Saishuu Heiki - The rapping doesn't work. Pretty boring until the end with a few interesting drum breaks, but overall it's just a fail for me. 2

Divaman
08.28.21 | 28. Haru Nemuri - So Johnny, what's the deal w/you and Japanese music? Just curious. Anyway, here goes. Oh my. Female Japanese hip-hop, huh? Hmm. Kind of weird. It's not something I'd choose to listen to on my own, but it's not painful either. I don't know. I'm gonna go 2.7 |
fogza
08.29.21 | 29. Mister and Mississippi: For us to remember - It's ok but I think I prefer something with more personality in the vocals. I also wanted it to get to where it was going a bit quicker. 3 |
Pangea
08.29.21 | Catching up time! i really need to try to be more on top on this the coming months
19. Mariajo - this is just lovely, i love the guitar melody. 4.2
20. Ride - a little boring but neat post punk. 3.2
21. Kindred - never fully explored burial, but also never really cared about the stuff i have heard. i'm afraid this isn't an exception. I don't really like the beats, not in the context of this track anyway, they maybe feel a little too harsh for me? Track feels somewhat uneventful too. There's a nice atmophere but it never really feels like it's getting anywhere and the track was just plodding along for 11 minutes. 2.5
22. Fancy Dress - it is fun. 3.2
23. The Curtain - Nice, although the calm opening was by far the most satisfying aspect for me. 3.5
24. Фотоаппарат - hmm love this. calm and really nice bass. 4.0
|
Divaman
08.29.21 | 29. Mister and Mississippi - Not sure how I feel about this band's name. OK, let's go. Quiet synth. Subdued male vocal. Female vocal comes in in the background. (Presumably that's Miss Issippi.) Felt like it was building towards something, but never really got there. 2.8 |
Divaman
08.30.21 | 30. Silvio Rodriguez - Quiet acoustic guitar. Soft male vocal. I don't love his voice, but it's OK, and (presuming this is an original), he clearly knows how to write a song. 3.2 |
Pangea
08.30.21 | 25. Nektar - this jams nice nice. 3.7
26. Seen Your Video - this is good but i wasn't particularly into it. 3.0
27. Passage to Bangkok - oh no i really don't like these vocals. Everything else is decent though 2.7
28. Boku wa Saishuu Heiki - possibly the most johnny rec i have ever heard. it is good. 3.3
29. For Us To Remember - agreed with everyone that this is literally the greatest song to ever exist with the most satisfying climax of all time.

Divaman
08.31.21 | 31. Chochukmo - What the? Oh never mind, that was a Grammarly ad. What the? Oh, that's the guy's vocal. Mid-tempo rocker, sounds a little inside out. Thought I heard some vaguely Asian rhythms in there, and I see they're from Hong Kong. Hmm. Now it seems like they've fallen asleep a little less than halfway in. Thought it was over - it came to a dead stop, then started again before I could close that window. It's alright. 2.7 |

09.01.21 | "I Know, You Know, I Know"
Chill acoustic rock. Not much else to say about this other than that it's simple and pleasant. Hard to love, hard to hate.
3.2/5
"Sardinia"
Gregorian chanting with bells? Wait, now it's kind of cool. Fun vocals and saxophone were both very unexpected. Would this count as new-age music or just spacey jazz? That was neat.
3.7/5
"Pilgrimage"
Pretty voice, pretty harp (I think it's harp?), pretty twinkles, pretty everything. I wouldn't say that I love this, but it's very easy on the ears.
3.5/5
"Lightning Song"
More pretty music with strings, guitar, and a woman's voice. Now it's got a guitar pickup, hmmm. I don't care for this at all, but it's not bad or anything.
2.9/5
"Best Friends and Hospital Beds"
Bad vocals, annoying guitar riff, and inaudible bass. It could be worse, at least he's not cry-screaming. I mean he's whine shouting, so he's halfway there. Oh looks it's a really generic bridge. Fuck this entire genre.
1.8/5 |
ArsMoriendi
09.01.21 | "Mona Lisa Naeratus"
This is a hardcore punk song alright. Those vocals are distracting. I wonder what he's saying. Maybe "fuck the USSR!" or something. This was good I guess.
3/5
"The Feather/Free the Eagle"
Folk with a pan flute. Not exactly stimulating, but the vocals give it some life. Pretty good actually. Succinct feeling despite being 4 minutes.
3.6/5
"Radio"
This is cheating because I already love this one. Samply, dancy goodness. Some funk samples, some goofy mish-mash of vocals. The dude watches a taste pattern and we hear what's in his head y'know?
4.9/5
"Mariajo"
That guitar pattern reminds me of R.E.M. The vocals seem somber and melancholic. This is pretty cool, yeah.
3.7/5
"Ride"
Dreamy vocals. The guitar is pretty neat. This is certainly good, but it doesn't really stand out against similar good songs, if that makes sense.
3.4/5 |
ArsMoriendi
09.01.21 | "Kindred"
11 and a half minutes? This better be awesome. It's dancy at least. A weird storm section in the middle? The vocals are nice, but I don't know if I'd ever want to sit through this again. It's too sparse for its length, but I respect it. Gimme a 4 min edit of this.
3/5
"Fancy Dress"
Those vocals suck off the bat. This is like a radio rock fever dream. And the pickup made it even worse. Death to pop punk.
1.9/5
"幕布 The curtain"
Pretty, slow indie rock so far. That jumbly guitar makes an otherwise generic song kind of interesting. This is boring me, sorry.
2.8/5
Taking a break, will finish the rest of this later! |
ArsMoriendi
09.01.21 | "Фотоаппарат"
Off to a good start with the guitar, bass, and drums all standing out. Ooh and that double-tracking vocal is awesome. WTF IS THIS, it's so good. Why isn't this internationally famous? The Russians have been holding out on us!
5/5
"Desolation Valley/Waves"
Very distorted guitar. Now it sounds like Yes. The guitar, the bass, and the keys are all cool. Drums are nice too. Not exactly original sounding, but I have to admit "Yes knockoff" is not a bad direction. Not bad at all.
3.6/5
"Seen Your Video"
Good riff so far. Thought this was gonna be instrumental, but now it's like goofy punk. This isn't as good as I hoped it'd be, but it's not bad either.
3.2/5
"Passage to Bangkok"
Oh God, that stereotypical Chinese motif, nooooo please don't Rush. Man fuck Geddy's voice is so irritating. How do you take a train from Bogota to Bangkok? That literally makes no sense. The guitar, bass, and drums are whatever. I guess this song is about weed or something. The fact that no place in China was mentioned in the lyrics leads me to believe that Rush thinks that motif is representative of Thailand. This might be worse than their typical robotic rock.
2/5
"Boku wa Saishuu Heiki"
She's rapping over electronic distortion, how novel. I like the bleep bloops. Kinda obnoxious, but it works because of it. Very original. Dare to be different noise-hop lady!
3.6/5
"For Us To Remember"
Cheesy, emotional, and ambient so far. The grand buildup drums make me think this song is meant to be inspiring. I'm not feeling this, but it's not awful or anything.
3/5
"Quién Fuera"
More folk, eh? Kind of plain honestly. He's said "heart" a lot in this song, so I assume this is a love song. I'm bored honestly. The guitar is trying harder to be interesting, nice! +.1 for trying harder!
3.1/5
“Good Night”
I don't like these vocals, but the guitar is decent. Needs more bass honestly. Not into this at all. Jangly guitar outro and the drums are neat now. I wish the vocals didn't damper this so much.
3/5 |
