Go look up the band Majestic. I'll give you a link to start you off on the right foot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB8rBRIbyS8
They really need to spread. And I finally get to post about them in a thread where it's not off-topic or obnoxious! Seriously though, check that link. You will not be disappointed.
Go drop a rating on their albums. Anything below a 4 and I will find you.
pantera - power metal
^all you need right there
That and Majestic. They put out two albums, they're both amazing. I'm gonna keep on making these plugs until they start to spread. Tell your Sputnik friends!
all you need
Being known as the "guy that only listens to power metal" the past 6 years on this site, you really only need to listen to Lost Horizon, Kamelot, Rhapsody of Fire, and Blind Guardian. The genre is so bottled down by boring and generic material that these four bands are the constant.
was on acid when someone randomly played dragonforce. laughed til it hurt
Demons & Wizards
Majesty of Revival
wuthering heights m/
Savatage - The Hall Of The Mountain King
Running Wild - Port Royal
Manowar - Kings of Metal
Iced Earth - Burnt Offerings
Rage - Lingua Mortis
Can people include an example song/good album to start with for these bands? Especially for Blind
Also, can people say which of these are more on the proggy side? (a la Symphony X)
Thanks for the recs so far
Nightfall on Middle-Earth is a good place to start with Blind Guardian. check these songs man.
Pagan's Mind is definitely really proggy as well. One of my favorite tracks of theirs is Through Osiris' Eyes. I would fix my list for you, but then the comments would get all screwed up.
Although not classified as power metal, but symphonic metal, you should definitely listen to Therion (starting with Theli).
Man, I'm seeing Dodecahedron posting these big lists of bands and not mentioning Majestic at all. Bands similar in name, but not Majestic.
IT'S SO FUN
you already mentioned majestic a few times, so other people repeating it isn't exactly necessary. Don't worry, i'll check it out.
Good to know :D
I'm sorry for spamming, I just love that band.
the only good power metal record i've ever heard-
blind guardian
I forgot somebody showed me a blind guardian song a few years back but didn't really enjoy it
(Valhalla) so I listened to it again and fell in love with it. Listened to another song from that
album and loved it too. I just may have to pick up a copy of Follow the Blind if I see one. I
listened to Mirror Mirror from Nightfall in Middle Earth and it's great but I feel like Follow would
be a better place for me to start. It seems a bit more accessible since I know songs from it and it
has less interludes than nightfall. Or should I go with something a bit later and a bit less thrashy?
Get a little bit further away from my comfort zone...
Beyond the cliches, a big part of power metal bands are talented and have good lyrics and interesting topics ( but some people will consider them cheesy ).If you want to det a little bit further away from my comfort zone maybe you should start digging kamelot mabbit, or dragonland
Angra - Carry on
Stratovarius - Destiny
Tierra Santa - Sangre de reyes
Nightwish - Oceanborn
Sym X - All from TDWOT onwards (last album is a little sketchy, tho)
Dont remember anything else, Power Metal burned me out a lot time ago.
I suggest you check prog / power (better than the other way around), like Lethal - Programmed, Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime and Fates Warnings - Parallels.
Power Quest is the epitome of cheesy power metal, but they make it work so well.
FAR AWAY IN A BYGONE AGE
Symph X needs to prog more now
