11.08.19 | From my view on it so far, HORRIBLE/FUCKING BORING gameplay, good and interesting story, basically, Kojima should have made just a movie instead, cause this "games" gameplay is fucking ASS, seriously |

11.08.19 | I may be a total sad act, but the little nuances that seem tedious af kind of appeal to me, in theory. Colour me intrigued, my interest is certainly piqued anyway. Depends how it actually plays out in reality. |

11.08.19 | The story is what interests me the most. Kojima with blank universe to create stuff is exciting. |
Tundra
11.08.19 | although the story is decent so far though, there is a LARGE reliance on shock value in basically every scene (ones that make you go WOAH OMG WHAT WAS THAT?!?!?) and it is way overused even in my short time playing the game |

11.09.19 | Game is incredible. Loving every moment of it. The moment-by-moment gameplay is a relaxing exercise. I hear a lot of reviewers complain about falling over constantly -- I haven't fallen over once. I imagine if you run a lot and don't take the time to hold your cargo over unsteady terrain you may fall a lot.
Each expedition in this game is like a drone track. I may or may not be writing a lengthy essay on this comparison. |
Gallantin
11.09.19 | Also from my experience, nothing Tundra has said about the story so far seems to be true. Most of the generally sparse cutscenes are long bits of exposition, which is common for Kojima. I haven't seen any "shock value" stuff. |
Gallantin
11.09.19 | You're missing out on a very good game that creates dense experiences out of mapping expeditions, forging unique paths, and helping other players more easily traverse harder paths. It's sort of like mapping the perfect stealth route in a Metal Gear Solid game. There's a certain thrill to finding the most efficient route. |
Gallantin
11.09.19 | Well, your decision to get it or not is your own. But the quality is immaculate, and the game is not nearly as tedious as detractors would have you believe.
Let me put it this way: if you enjoy sneaking around in MGS at a snail's pace and mapping guard locations and finding smart routes through dense areas, this game will appeal to you. |

DrGonzo1937
11.10.19 | i'm 30 hours into it and how people are calling it a masterpiece is beyond me. 90% of the game is a fetch quest, whilst constantly trying to make sure Norman doesn't fall on his ass. as opposed to people who love walking simulators? |
Gallantin
11.11.19 | Death Stranding isn't a walking simulator, at least not in the sense that term was actually created from. A lot of Death Stranding's gameplay may be in literal physical navigation, but it's not just like pressing forward on the analogue stick and calling it a day. And also, thinking the game is nothing but walking is silly. If anything, this game has too many stealth and combat sections for what I want out of it. It's not that far removed from any other action title, at least not as much as random reviewers would have you believe. |
Faraudo
11.11.19 | This game is awesome, and more AAA companies should take the risk and make stuff like this. |
DrGonzo1937
11.11.19 | @Gallantin
lol i think we played different games. ALL this game is is walking and driving with the occasional bit of stealth -- take the thing from point A to point B. the only time the game gets interesting is when Mads Mikkelsen comes into the fray. i think the only reason people are losing their load over this is because of the fact it's hideo. if anyone else had made this it would be openly criticized. i love the world and story, but in terms of gameplay this is such a step back. all of the main missions feel like side missions, making the thought of doing the side missions unbearable |
Gyromania

DrGonzo1937
11.11.19 | "If anything, this game has too many stealth and combat sections"

Gallantin
11.11.19 | The game IS openly criticised. Don't pull weak shit like "people only like it bc it says Kojima". That's not criticism
That's weak deflection.
The game's moment by moment traversal is engaging and wonderful to experience. I absolutely love plotting out multiple routes around timefall locations and spans of time, using the map to figure out what types of terrain I'll be crossing and which tools I'll need most, being able to find optimal routes around or through MULE camps, etc. It's absolutely sublime the way the game has stripped back traditional action gameplay and turned the mere act of area traversal into a considered and challenging experience. One time I got chased by MULEs into a bad part of the map and had to scale a cliff in timefall with only two ladders and getting to the top, ran into a timefall shelter built by someone else on the server, which allowed me just BARELY to save the package I was delivering. It was exhilerating and I've waited so long for a game to emulate the "journey" like this game does. As I said earlier, Death Stranding is like a drone album. It's repetitive and considered and it takes what other genres would consider a base for the music/gameplay and turns it into its own exploratory experience. Seeing the way it changes laterally rather than vertically into forced climaxes, it's a surreal experience getting to the end of a long trek and the climax is just a quiet stroll into a waystation to drop off some cargo.
But again, I've always been into slow and considered gameplay. It's why I like to play the Souls games in heavy armour with a shield. It's why in MGS games I always focus on pure, excessively slow non-lethal stealth. This is EXACTLY my jam. And I feel like the game is somewhat too padded with MULE camps just to fuel faux-excitement for those who want action. |
Gallantin
11.11.19 | I'll link my article comparing Death Stranding to drone music when it's finished so everyone can laugh at me |
Gallantin
11.11.19 | Not to mention the asymmetrical online is by far the best version of this idea we've ever seen. I've always felt that the Souls series asymmetrical online stuff, while damn ingenious and pioneering, was never perfected. Well, as far as I'm concerned, Death Stranding has perfected it. Nothing beats the feeling of coming across a ladder or shelter or generator or road laid down by another player just in the exact right spot you need it, and it encourages you to go out and go through harsh areas solely with the focus of creating new paths for other people in order to make it easier for them. It's a brilliant system. |
Gallantin
11.11.19 | Anyone saying shit like "fetch quests" has their mind in gutter. This is not an RPG. There are no fetch quests. You are not meant to be seeking extrinsic rewards here. The game is entirely focused on intrinsic rewards related to experiential gameplay. I'm gonna remember the experience far more than i'm gonna remember some skinner box faux-reward system. People these days have had their minds flayed by modern AAA game standards, I swear.
|
Gyromania
11.11.19 | We get it bro, you're a massive fan of Kojima and will defend his Amazon delivery service simulator to the bitter end |
Gallantin
11.11.19 | I don't consider myself a specific fan of Kojima. I'm pretty openly critical of a few of his games. That's why I avoid referring to Kojima, I just refer to the games themselves. I mean I hate MGS Peace Walker, and I'm quite negative in regards to the majority of MGS2 gameplay-wise. I get no great enjoyment out of Zone of the Enders, I think Snatcher and Policenauts aren't really standouts of their genre, though they're not bad. And I also think Metal Gear 1 and 2 suffer a lot of garbage design decisions that plagued games of that era.
I just like the games that I like, I have no interest in putting Kojima on a pedastal. I have plenty of issues with Death Stranding, too, just not the issues everyone else seems to have. I think the cutscenes rely way too much on exposition (ESPECIALLY for a Kojima game), I think the game focuses too hard on trying to force action setpieces with an overabundance of MULE camps and lacklustre boss battles. I think the game definitely is way too far up Norman Reedus' ass, just look at any gameplay from the private room. The game has issues, but those issues aren't in its main systems or its world traversal. |
ramon.
11.11.19 | Mmm yea I'm enjoying the core gameplay loop. What's happening on screen might look mundane but I find you are constantly being forced to make meaningful decisions. You get rewarded for strategizing. It isn't a case of "hold W and click heads". The level to which the environment plays a part in survival (or lack thereof) also prevents stuff like exploiting AI less of a comfort.
And, well, it's the only game of its ilk right now. There are certainly many inventory management heavy games out there but few that give near-constant feedback regarding the alterations you make. You are made to feel every tiny decision you make constantly. Regardless of what aesthetic package that kind of gameplay comes in, I find that to be a very impressive feat, and especially for a single player title where you aren't having to adapt to other players in a direct, head-on sense. |
Gyromania
11.11.19 | Zone of the Enders is awesome wtf |
Gallantin
11.11.19 | It's alright. |
DrGonzo1937
11.11.19 | "Don't pull weak shit like "people only like it bc it says Kojima". That's not criticism"
i dont need to. i could criticize this thing all day without stating the blind fandom. and you can sugarcoat the mundane gameplay as "an experience" all you want, but at the end of the day the game boils down to offering nothing more than side-mission grade missions. i literally did a mission last night that annoyed the hell out of me: go up a mountain and meet a hologram, go down the mountain to meet another hologram, only to have that hologram send you back up the mountain again to delivery a thing. how is that satisfying? honestly, that shit wouldn't fly with anyone other than hideo, if this is what it was offering for main missions.
im an open-minded player as well, i love things that are different, but its just the same thing all the time. the production values are obviously there, the story is great, and the online aspects are meaningful and well executed, but the gameplay is so self-indulgent it fails to be fun. this is hideo being given free reign and it bloody well shows. the mgs games had him on a leash and theyre better games for it. |
Gallantin
11.11.19 | Again, "wouldn't fly with anyone other than hideo" is the dumbest criticism you could possibly levy at the game. At least pretend like you're just unimpressed and/or disappointed on your own part, don't try to unload your dissatisfaction with something as somebody else's failure to be dissatisfied, too. |
DrGonzo1937
11.11.19 | at what point have i pretended to be anything other than disappointed and unimpressed? Im merely pointing out that if anyone else had made a game like this, you can bet your ass it would be strung for its mechanics |
Gallantin
11.11.19 | Dissapointed and unimpressed *on your own part*, on your own end. Again, stop trying to hang your own dissatisfaction on the lack of dissatisfaction from others. You're manufacturing reasons for why you're enlightened and unbiased like it's some kind of objective truth that if the exact same game came from any other development studio on the planet, then everybody would be as enlightened as you, unrestrained by the shackles of *checks notes* enjoying a video game. |

11.11.19 | "Because only little bitches can't man up to their own likes and dislikes without making up scenarios in order to push a false biases on those who disagree with them."
Real men embrace their opinions as arbitrary fluff floating in a vacuum, only little bitches try to pinpoint their views as symptomatic of identifiable phenomena, yes. There goes Gonzo again pointing out specific facets of gameplay and sequences he disliked; when is that guy going to stop making up scenarios smh. Only thing elevating this from instant pasta is the time it takes to unpack the amount of bullshit stuffed into it. |
Pikazilla
11.11.19 | Gallantin is the only one who's being a little bitch here, constantly whining about somebody disliking a game. Seriously, man? Gonzo isn't the only one who's "pushing false biases onto people", the tediousness has been the primary complaint from a bevy of gamers. |
Demon of the Fall
11.11.19 | tbf Gonzo keeps bringing up his assertion that people only like this, or are at least more 'forgiving' of its flaws because of Hideo. Whereas there's zero evidence that's the case, at least here. |
Gallantin
11.11.19 | @pika: I know, I'm the one who acknowledged that when Dr. "If Kojima didn't make it then it would be criticised" Gonzo acted as if the game isn't widely polarising right now.
I just think if you're gonna criticise a game, pulling out dumb shit like "ppl wouldnt like it if x didnt make it" is the single stupidest shit you could say in regards to literally anything, thus extracting the info that Dr. Gonzo is a dumb lil bitch who probs like Bioshock infinite heyoooooo nobody would like that game if it wasnt called bioshock amirite BoooiiZZZ |
Pikazilla
11.11.19 | Well, yeah, I don't think the creator/studio matters at the end of the day. It's all about the final product. Remember when EA actually released good games and not live service garbage?
At least my boi Igarashi lived up to the hype and produced a quality game. |
Gallantin
11.11.19 | Like, is it not telling that most of the comments here in regards to the game are negative? And most online discourse involves many detractors. Hell, despite a lot of perfect reviews, it's telling that the game got a bunch of excessively negative reviews. Middle of the road reviews are common, but it's actually quite a rare occurance for a game of this size from a AAA dev to get such highly negative reviews from game critics.
There is far more negative bias for this game than there is usually for a AAA title, which is fine, really, but it's weird that people still act like it somehow hasn't been lambasted by many people, critics and consumers alike. The way Dr Ginzo tells it, you'd think the game has literally never been criticised once, despite all the constant evidence to contrary literally anywhere on the internet. |
Gallantin
11.11.19 | Anyway, derailed that convo.
2019 has been the best year for games this decade. It has combat, stealth, and I wouldn't say "puzzles" per se, but there is a great deal of strategy when routing and traversing the map. And don't be fooled by the "walking" part, it is far from just pushing forward on the stick. You need to be able to physically manage your full body over all terrain, just pushing forward and walking straight will lead to tumbles and death |

11.11.19 | "If I were to rank top games of the decade, I'd put MonHun 4U, 3U, or GenU on the list over World, BUT I'd also probably put them all on just bc I fucking love Monster Hunter"
this franchise seemed like something i'd dig but i got MH3U a couple months ago and it's honestly the shittiest fucking thing i've ever played. the movement and combat is hysterically ghetto and the game takes tedium to intergalactic levels. combined with the graphic and maps etc its a 2011 game that feels like a 2000 game.
based on this would i hate all the newer ones too? |

JohnnyoftheWell
11.11.19 | Oh damn me too! about 75 hrs into Persona 5 that is - saw a playthrough of Nier Gestalt, and Automata is one of my all-time favourites but hot damn, the overall plotline between the two of them is wayward |
Gyromania
11.11.19 | Yeah I think MHW is awesome and that's coming from someone who's played 3 MH games prior to (including MH3U) and thought they were all dogshit. |
JohnnyoftheWell
11.11.19 | Hmm, was thinking about trying MHW - pitch it me, Gyro? |
Gyromania
11.11.19 | Witcher 3 is my game of the decade tho. Nier Automata, Cupehead, Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, Celeste, Hollow Knight, Dirt Rally 2, Ori, Sonic Mania, Edith Finch, and RE7 are all up there too |
Gyromania
11.11.19 | Unlike the others in the series the combat is diverse and fun as hell and the biomes a blast to traverse - lots of vertically makes for cool shortcuts and fun traps to set. Moreover, the diversity of Monsters is great, and crossovers to other games (you can dress up as Nier Automata characters, Horizon Zero Dawn, Dark Souls, etc). That gameplay loop is still there tho, so if you don't like the grind of hunting down monsters and fighting and tracking them for upwards of 40 minutes sometimes, all for the sake of getting new gear and stronger weapons, then it won't be for you |
JohnnyoftheWell
11.11.19 | "you can dress up as Nier Automata characters, Horizon Zero Dawn, Dark Souls, etc"
Lol what. Sounds dope though, will keep an eye out for a cheap buy :] |
Gyromania
11.11.19 | Yeah, your palico (your cat partner) can be dressed up as a lot of things too, including MegaMan lol. Pretty sure you can even be Ryu from Street Fighter. It's a pretty cool suite of cosmetics, and with the new expansion out (Iceborne) now is the best time to jump in tbh. Also the weapons are all very unique - great hammers, bow staff, swords, bagpipes (yes, this is a thing), etc., all of them have a huge set of combos. It can take several hours to master even 1 weapon and it feels very rewarding - kind of akin to how deep some of Bloodborne's weapons' systems are. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.11.19 | Witcher 3 was good but I found it a bit overrated. Didnt get to play the expansions even tho I bought them tho, they didnt work |
JeetJeet
11.12.19 | I was so fuckin hype for this game but honestly its so underwhelming and disappointing and I'm just slogging thru it for the story. And even then I kinda just wanna look up the cut scenes on youtube and wash my hands of the game entirely. Fuck. |

Gallantin
11.12.19 | Yeah, OG Monster Hunter is not for everyone, lol. There's a reason the series soared in popularity outside of Japan with World. Westerners like to have an easy time with all of the casualised mechanics. World is a lotta fun tho, can't deny it. I'm still a classic MonHun fan at heart tho. I love that weird esoteric Japanese design. |
anarchistfish
11.12.19 | a guy in my school always binged monster hunter on his psp. i always thought it looked boring as hell, but maybe you have to play it to get it |
Gallantin
11.12.19 | Look, you'd probably hate it. It's based around constant repetitive gameplay. You hunt a monster, turn it into gear, then hunt more monsters. The primary goal will always end up being to farm a single monster dozens of times to get specific parts for specific gear. There are lots of challenge hunts and some fun online stuff, but otherwise it's a series dedicated to unparalleled and uncompromising grind with obtuse mechanics and outdated controls that make it a chore to learn. It's difficult to love even if you want to love it. I won't deny anyone new to the series is better off going into World first, because that game eased up a lot of systems, made combat smoother and made it radically easier to farm gear. |
anarchistfish
11.12.19 | yh anyway is it true that you can play OG MGS on the ps4 if u have ps now? |
Gallantin
11.12.19 | Uh in the US, yeah that might be true, I know PS Now over there has a lot of older games. I'm in Australia so if I want to play old MGS games I don't have the option of PS Now, sp I have to use the PS3. You can play MGS1 on the PS3 easy |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.12.19 | Tbf My dislike of monster hunter 3 wasn't about difficulty or mechanical depth at all, that's what made me check it out in fact. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.12.19 | The combat wasnt fun, the quests were tedious, repetative and not nearly as rewarding as promised, I dunno everything about that game was monotonous |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.12.19 | Yo fight this monster for 40 minutes, k now do it again but trap it, k now do it again but now its purple, k now its purple AND you gotta trap it, k now go find it in the wild and fight it 12 more times so you can make a hat |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.12.19 | I cant think of a single game that made grinding even less fun |
Gallantin
11.12.19 | Yeah, that's Monster Hunter for you. And if I'm honest, there isn't much mechanical depth to it. When I said "casualised mechanics", I guess that might have been a wrong choice of words. I don't think the classic MonHun games are particularly difficult or mechanically rich, like the combat in them is really quite shallow, just has a large weapon pool. Idk what Gyro means when he says the weapons are as deep as Bloodbornes (both games have incredibly shallow weapon depth compared to any number of other action games). When I said casualised mechanics I meant stuff like how hunts are made simpler with less tedious tracking, grinding is lessened with far laxer reward requirements, etc. World requires much less grinding on the whole compared to the old games (outside of decoration farming, which is worse than ever in World funnily enough). People took to World easier because it asked less of them when it came to tedium and repetition, and offered up far more in terms of tangible rewards.
Again, I wouldn't blame anyone for hating old MonHun games, you have to be a very specific type of loser to enjoy that grindy, clunky bullshit |
Gallantin
11.12.19 | And I am exactly that type of loser. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.12.19 | Nice, well I think I'll probably give world a shot sometime then cuz I really wanted to love it and if that one takes care of the common gripes there is a good chance I'll dig it |
Gallantin
11.12.19 | Despite me being the type of weirdo who misses all the garbage that World took out, I still love the game and have put 200 hours into it, so I very highly recommend it. Its online features are also so simple and easy that you can opt into multiplayer hunts whenever you want, and if you don't like the tedium of a long hunt but just want to enjoy it, the multiplayer is a super easy way to do that.
The only big problem with World is clunky UI, but you get used to it pretty quick. |
Gallantin
11.12.19 | And depending on how complex you want your combat to feel, I'd say go with the longsword if you want simple combat, or go charge blade/hunting horn if you want weapons with a bit more mechanical depth beyond a simple 1-2 repeat combo. But again, you probably know you're not gonna get Devil May Cry out of the combat system, it's pretty basic even once you learn the hardest weapons. |
Gallantin
11.12.19 | The bow is also OP in World and probably the easiest Gunner-type weapon to use. They even nerfed it in Iceborne and it's STILL OP. So that's an easy and powerful weapon if you like ranged play. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.12.19 | Thanks for the info. Not big fan of ranging when I have the choice, I used the great sword and the twin swords in MH3U |
Aenima97
11.12.19 | Walking simulator with cargo on your back which you have to go and fetch if knocked off due to the balance system. Tedious and arduous slogging across open terrain and the fast travel mechanic is fickle, honestly not particularly interested in continuing it. The game is gorgeous from an aesthetic standpoint but that doesn't really mean much at the end of the day when the actual gameplay is monotonous. Nice to see Norman Reedus get more projects but this ain't it for me. |
Gyromania
11.12.19 | It's all about that insect glaive |

11.12.19 | Actually let me try to make my top, say...10 games of the decade.
1. Dark Souls
2. Metal Gear Solid V
3. Breath of the Wild
4. ...honestly? Probably Death Stranding
5. MonHun 4U
6. Resident Evil 2 Remake
7. Bloodborne
8. Pillars of Eternity
9. Overwatch (don't play it anymore but 500 hours don't lie)
10. XCOM 2
Great list, pretty similar to mine even though Death Stranding isn't anywhere in it lol. Maybe would add Smash and Mario Odyssey somewhere. Dark Souls is the best one easily though. Also thanks for not putting The Witcher there lol. Also I'd be tempted to add Hollow Knight somewhere. |

11.12.19 | Mario Odyssey would make my top 15 no doubt. XCOM 2 only edged it out by a little. |

11.14.19 | Oh, Kotaku have brilliant writers. I'd add Nathan to the list too. I just don't think any gaming publications are really that good on the whole to begin with. Brilliant writers notwithstanding, Tim's kinda still his own beast, and I seldom see support for the site that isn't near-directly headed in his direction. Escapist Magazine had some fantastic writers for a while, and even then, Yahtzee was clearly the the site's boon.
I'm likely just a little too blessed by independent content creation at this point, what with channels like Ahoy, GMTK, Turbo Button, etc, all delivering content that's consistently enthralling and thought provoking without any of the nonsense that comes with having a full staff. |

Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.16.19 | lol its not about it being ~too complex too understand~, its about the comically over-the-top, methed out concept of certain people walking around with premature mud babies to avoid giant invisible acid rain monsters from another dimension who FUCKING EXPLODE massive craters in the earth when they destroy you and if ur special you wake up in their secret dimension resurrected naked so you can crawl out of the fucking mud with your norman reedus face and do it all over again |

11.16.19 | Nah, skies aren't acid, the rain accelerates time on anything it touches. Also a lot of Death Stranding's themes and ideas are stolen from classic sci-fi works, Left Hand of Darkness, Stalker/Roadside Picnic, Ghost In the Shell. It's not very out there or new for the genre. |
anarchistfish

"It's not very out there or new for the genre."
its also not very coherent or thought-provoking ¯_(ツ)_/¯ |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.16.19 | Never suggested it struck me as too "complex", "hard to understand", "out there", or "new". I wish it was considering none of those things are really criticisms. Just overly self-indulgent, spasmodic, and ultimately not very intriguing because of it. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.16.19 | Of course these are just my feelings from reading about the story online but its important for a game to make you want to play it and this game just makes me want to make fun of it |
anarchistfish
11.17.19 | I also haven't played it |
Gallantin
11.17.19 | "its also not very coherent or thought-provoking"
I never said it was, either. My biggest problem with the game now is the story. There's far too much exposition, and Kojima is still on his bullshit where he's constantly turning all his women into a tool for suffering, and there are some random little plot points that are overdone for almost no reason.
I'm only really in this for the gameplay. I have never really fetishised Kojima's storytelling, because it is always by far the weakest aspect of all his games. |
Floofus
11.19.19 | Watched my fiance play the game when she got it on release and it was just 3 hours of nearly pure exposition and cutscenes. Considering that, is this really sorry buying right now? Or wait until cheap in a few months? |

The game has so much gameplay that you can play for ovee 100 hours before even deciding to get to the end. |
