Deathconscious
01.17.16 | Darkspace - Dark Space III
dark-cold-void-of-space kind of black metal.
Summoning - Oath Bound
if a symphonic black metal band had to make the soundtrack for the Lord of the Rings movies. its not really even black metal at all but its influenced by it. |
enedwaith
01.17.16 | i wonder if oath bound is the best album to start him off with, if he likes post gaze stuff. maybe nightshade forests for post-bm, or stronghold, which most people seem to first fall in love with
but yeah, bergtatt comes before everything else imo. greatest album of all times |
Deathconscious
01.17.16 | "I gave him the essential entry-level bm. Start em out right. There's 0 black metal on this list."
dont be dumb. |
climactic
01.17.16 | beherit entry level bm right |
Deathconscious
01.17.16 | i really have no idea why Celtic Frost gets the black metal tag, it doesnt make any sense. |
romulanrancor
01.17.16 | They have a blackened sound |
Deathconscious
01.17.16 | right, i know thats what people are implying when they call it black metal...your comment isnt really helping me understand how its blackened. |
romulanrancor
01.17.16 | I'm not really saying it's Black Metal, but I think it has elements of Black Metal. I can't really put my finger on it but they just have a particular sound. |
enedwaith
01.17.16 | because hellhammer is unquestionably first wave, and at least morbid tales era cf is a continuation in spirit |
DeadGuy
01.17.16 | Venom and Celtic Frost get all this credibility for black metal. Celtic Frost is way more black metal than Venom. I would consider both thrash in hindsight though |
enedwaith
01.17.16 | because first wave black metal is an aesthetic, which is also why early mercyful fate is first wave |
DeadGuy
01.17.16 | Yea i can dig it. I like this discussion with grindcore too. When did fast hardcore transition into grindcore? |
Deathconscious
01.17.16 | i dont consider Hellhammer, Venom, or Celtic Frost to be black metal. and Mercyful Fate definitely isnt. |
enedwaith
01.17.16 | they're all first wave black metal, which is just a convenient classification for all the abrasive speed bands that had satanic/black imagery in the early 80s
second wave has a more definite sound |
Mystletainn
01.17.16 | "i dont consider Hellhammer, Venom, or Celtic Frost to be black metal. and Mercyful Fate definitely isnt."
Keep living life with a wrong opinion I guess?
Ya there's no black metal on this list, agreed. |
Deathconscious
01.17.16 | "Keep living life with a wrong opinion I guess?
Ya there's no black metal on this list, agreed."
thats a pretty ironic statement youve got there. |
enedwaith
01.17.16 | guys we can meet halfway; all the bands in this thread fall under the great umbrella of bm
mercyful fate is just as black metal as lantlos, only they're on different ends of the spectrm |
TheSpirit
01.17.16 | Saying there is no black metal on this list is pretty dumb (Panopticon, Saor) and though the other stuff is some kind of post-black metal hybrid, don't be those dicks who are just like "WOW NO GORGOROTH FUCKING POSER 666!" |
Negator
01.17.16 | Vordr - II |
Mystletainn
01.17.16 | So you don't question why Dopamine or Agalloch are on a BM list but question why Celtic Frost is considered BM, makes sense. |
TheSpirit
01.17.16 | As far as the comments about Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate, and first wave black metal, those bands contributed pretty heavily to the visual aesthetics as well as some pretty prominent sonic elements. I tend to not really lump them in as black metal per se, but I don't see an issue them being called first wave. Still I wouldn't consider that brand of the genre to be the truest incarnation of it. |
InFlamesWeThrash666
01.17.16 | Not kvlt enough!!!111!11 |
TheSpirit
01.17.16 | Also, unsurprisingly nobody has bothered to mention Cradle of Filth, whose earlier albums are perfect for getting into black metal. Also their newest is pretty amazing as well. |
enedwaith
01.17.16 | well apocalyptic raids, along with deathcrush, is the truest iteration of the genre, there's no questioning that |
TheSpirit
01.17.16 | I would consider De Mysteriis... Mayhen's truest iteration. I like Deathcrush a lot, but considering what black metal has become and the element it's most known for, Deathcrush doesn't really fit the bill. |
TheSpirit
01.17.16 | Same story with Apocalyptic Raids. That release is fun as hell though. |
hikingmetalpunk
01.17.16 | darkthrone[9] |
enedwaith
01.17.16 | i see your faulty opinion and hereby challenge you to mortal combat |
Mystletainn
01.17.16 | So Cradle of Filth is a purer form of Black metal than Celtic Frost or Hellhammer. You guys think Bathory is thrash metal too? |
TheSpirit
01.17.16 | Wow, never said that at all |
Deathconscious
01.17.16 | its a genre classification, calm down. or, more preferably, fuck off. the conversation was going fine until you came in here. |
Mystletainn
01.17.16 | As calm as calm can be. The convo is still fine, maybe you took it all too personally or something idk. |
DeadGuy
01.17.16 | who the fuck is talking about cradle of filth? At least mention Dimmu Borgir before that bullshit lol. And no one was questioning Bathory lmao |
TheSpirit
01.17.16 | Cradle of Filth is a thousand times better than Dimmu (I'm also a big Dimmu fan as well though.) |
enedwaith
01.17.16 | "Cradle of Filth is a thousand times better than Dimmu"
:/ |
DeadGuy
01.17.16 | You seriously think Cradle Of Filth has released anything better than Enthrone Darkness Triumphant? |
TheSpirit
01.17.16 | trve facts |
Mystletainn
01.17.16 | Anyway here are a few recs that helped me get into BM:
Bathory - Bathory
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales
Darkthrone - A Blaze In The Northern Sky
Satryicon - Dark Medieval Times
Sarcofago - INRI
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas / Deathcrush |
TheSpirit
01.17.16 | "You seriously think Cradle Of Filth has released anything better than Enthrone Darkness Triumphant?"
Vempire
Dusk and Her Embrace
Cruelty of the Beast
Midian
Hammer of the Witches |
DeadGuy
01.17.16 | fuck Satyricon lol |
Mystletainn
01.17.16 | Dark Medieval Times is what black metal should sound like. |
DeadGuy
01.17.16 | naw, you're out of your mind spirit
I'll give you dusk and her embrace, but still does not top enthrone |
InFlamesWeThrash666
01.17.16 | fuck Satyricon lol
Their first 3 albums are great |
TheSpirit
01.17.16 | Satyricon were pretty great tbh |
DeadGuy
01.17.16 | Well I have to admit black metal is a genre I'm not well versed in lol. I enjoy the discussion though lol |
enedwaith
01.17.16 | "Dark Medieval Times is what black metal should sound like." [2] |
TheSpirit
01.17.16 | wait so should black metal sound like Dark Medieval Times or Deathcrush? because they both sound wildly different |
enedwaith
01.17.16 | man |
TheSpirit
01.17.16 | ;] |
ScuroFantasma
01.18.16 | "right, i know thats what people are implying when they call it black metal...your comment isnt really helping me understand how its blackened."
Because those bands contributed to what eventually became the 'black metal sound' so you've got thrashy/etc. riffs and songwriting that sound almost like they 'could' be bm if they were played in a certain way. Also as TheSpirit mentioned thy were stylistically important too, with all the leather and nails, the satanic or pagan stuff and general darkness of the music. I wouldn't perhaps call all of them 'black metal' but they definitely have the foundations of what later became black metal so in hindsight we can label them as such, at least partially. |
Deathconscious
01.18.16 | "they definitely have the foundations of what later became black metal"
well yeah, im not denying that. |
Relinquished
01.18.16 | what a puny but important discussion |
