Slashs February 2017
I'm back, fam. |
1 | | Heather B. Takin' Mine
Harcore-Rap// Really raw, aggressive and gritty hip-hop by the woman who is mostly known for sitting next to Sway most of the time. Which is a shame.// 5/5 |
2 | | Bahamadia Kollage
Eastcoast-Rap// So, this woman is ridiculously underappreciated. Like, man. //5/5 |
3 | | Nine Nine Livez
Hardcore-Rap// A bit too poppy for my taste, but still an absolutely essential listen for people who like aggressive east-coast shit with rough voices and even rougher bars. //4,5/5 |
4 | | Nine Cloud 9
Hardcore-Rap// Now THIS BAD BOY RIGHT HERE. No pop-tracks anymore, just pure aggression, bars and insight. This dude was eally something else in the 90s. Damn. Also has one of the best Nas-disses I have ever heard. //5/5 ALL DAY |
5 | | P.O.S We Don't Even Live Here
Doomtree-Hop// So, this was a nice surprise, but it wasn't as good as I hoped it to be. //4/5 |
6 | | Sims False Hopes XIV
Doomtree-Hop// Sims is really nice on this, but the beats are soooooooooooooooo bland. Thankfully this wasn't a real album. //3/5 |
7 | | Sims Bad Time Zoo
Doomtree-Hop// What can I say, the lyrics and beats finally match in creativity and forcefulness. Good stuff. Thank you, Lazerbeak. //4/5 |
8 | | Cecil Otter False Hopes
Doomtree-Hop// Again, Cecil is nice on here, but the beats are soooooooooooooo skeletal and stale. Raw for sure, but more in an undercooked way. //2,5/5 |
9 | | Paper Tiger False Hopes
Instrumental-Hop// Some nice ideas, but it amounts to pretty much nothing. The song with Dessa is nice, though. //2,5/5 |
10 | | Lazerbeak Lava Bangers
Instrumental-Hop// Some nice ideas, but it amounts to very little in the end. The production values are very good here, though. //3/5 |
11 | | Mixed Blood Majority Mixed Blood Majority
Doomtree-Hop// I have nothing to say about this. It's just kinda decent. //3/5 |
12 | | Dessa Castor, The Twin
Live-Hop// Some nice reimaginings of my favourite songs off of ABBC. the live instrumentation really does wonders for Dessas voice. //4/5 |
13 | | Guru Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1
Jazz-Hop// So this is basically always a step behind its potential, but all in all, the songs are very good. Especially the one with MC Solaar. Wavy. //4/5 |
14 | | Guru Jazzmatazz, Vol. 2: The New Reality
Jazz-Hop// Thankfully he resolved these problems with the best album of his career. Guru never sounded as awake, focused and non-monotonous as on here, the beats are all absolutely fantastic, the features are amazing (Gus da Vigilante is just, like, man) and the lyrics are incredibly insightful. God DAMN. //5/5 ALL DAY |
15 | | Kill Bill Drop Season [Singles Collection]
Sad-Hop// I kinda wish that this was a bit better, and it runs kinda dry sometimes, but when it is on, Bill can be one of the smoothest rappers ever on a beat. He's spitting some serious bars as well. //4/5 |
16 | | The Roots ...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin
Band-Hop// I really wish I liked this more, but this is definitely one of the worst entries in their discography. There is just so little to grab onto. //3/5 |
17 | | Gangsta Blac Can It Be?
Memphis-Rap// This was released in the mid-90s and there is still nothing that even sounds remotely like this. How far ahead of your time can you be? Absolutely peak-Three 6 material here. //5/5 ALL DAY |
18 | | Little Mix Glory Days
Pop// Super fun, super timely and well produced pop by four fantastic singers. Good stuff. //4/5 |
19 | | Jason Derulo Everything Is 4
Pop// Why do I like this? The synth-tones are unbearably garish on this album, but it's just. SO. FUN. GAH. //3,5/5 |
20 | | Kesha Animal
Pop// So, this aged way better than I ever could have imagined. The melodies on here are reaaaaally good. and the lyrics really aren't AS stupid as people would have you believe. //4/5 |
21 | | Neil Cicierega Mouth Moods
Memes// YOUNG MAN, I HAVE BEEN IN YOUR SHOES *tears* //4/5 |
22 | | Cypress Hill Black Sunday
Stoned// What? This is a classic. No discussion. //5/5 |
23 | | Nelly Furtado Folklore
Folk-Pop-Hop// So colorful and imaginative. She would never release something as good as this ever again. And the lyrics are soooooo good. Woah, Nelly indeed. //5/5 |
24 | | Nelly Furtado Loose
Pop// As a forray into more traditionally hip-hop territory, this is pretty good. Thank you, Timbaland. //4/5 |
25 | | Lauryn Hill The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Eastcoast-Rap// Yep, this is a classic. Indeed. //5/5 |
26 | | Ice Cube The Predator
Gangsta-Rap// So, what is it with what he is saying, that you have a problem with? //5/5 ALL DAY |
27 | | Ice Cube Lethal Injection
Gangsta-Rap// The first major sign, that Cube was loosing some serious steam. Still, the good songs are amazing on here. //4/5 |
28 | | Jay-Z Reasonable Doubt
Mafioso-Rap// Boyyyyyyyy, if you thought Jay-Z couldn't rap his ass off, this will prove you wayyyyy wrong. //5/5 |
29 | | Marsimoto Halloziehnation
German Rap// I can barely describe this album. Just an endless barrage of great ideas, samples and lyrics. And it's all stoned beyond belief. There is just nothing out there like this. //5/5 |
30 | | Marteria Base Ventura
German Rap// Very promising debut album, but the best was yet to come. The beats are fantastic. //4/5 |
31 | | Marteria Zum Glück in die Zukunft II
German Rap// His absolute masterpiece. Every concept pays off, every beat is amazing, the wordplay is there, the flows are there, the charisma is there. Absolutely perfect album. //5/5 ALL DAY |
32 | | Mika Life in Cartoon Motion
Pop// I'm a fan of the dude, okay? //4/5 |
33 | | Missy Elliott Under Construction
Missy-Hop// Probably her best next to SDF. Again, thank you Timbaland. //4,5/5 |
34 | | Queens of the Stone Age Queens of the Stone Age
Stoner-Rock// This is maybe a bit too undercooked, but songs like Avalon, Regular John and Mexicola are virtually perfect. //4/5 |
35 | | Migos Culture
Southern-Rap// Call Casting is amazing. T-Shirt is amazing. The rest? Pretty underwhelming. //3/5 |
36 | | Big Sean I Decided.
Medium Sean// Most definitely his best album yet. Sadly, that's all I have to say about it. //3,5/5 |
37 | | Ryuichi Sakamoto Beauty
Noidea// Weird mixture of J-Funk, classical japanese music, piano ballads, folkrock, synthpop and some spoken word thrown in there as well. I have no idea what to make of it, but I like it. Asadoyayunta and Diabaram are definite standouts, though. //4/5 |
38 | | Jidenna The Chief
Hip-Hop// Really nice surprise and a definite breath of fresh air. Really appreciate the strong nigerian musical influences on this album. And he can spit as well. Good stuff. //4/5 |
39 | | Lilly [ABANDONED]
Sad-Hop// Really disjointed, sketchy audio-quality, but really heartfelt. I dig it. //3,5/5 |
40 | | Lilly winter love.
Sad-Hop// This right here is legitimately nice and catchy, and the sound quality is better. I'm just a sucker for good sad rap. //4/5 |
41 | | Lilly Faceless
Sad-Hop// Legitimately unsettling and kinda unlistenable. Unique experience, though. //3/5 |
42 | | Future FUTURE
Future// Future. //Future/Future |
43 | | Future HNDRXX
PFFFT// HAH. GUSHY GUSH SO SOAKY. YOU SERIOUS? // NOPE//HELL NO |
44 | | Sampha Process
Whatever// Like, the first 4 tracks are absolutely flawless. After that I'm absolutely bored. I wish I liked this a whole lot more. An amazing voice and good lyrics can't save everything. //3/5 |
45 | | Syd Fin
R'n'B// Really good solo effort from one of my favourite singers in R'n'B right now. Can run a little repetitive, but her charisma and the lyrics mesh perfectly with the darker beats. I dig it. //4/5 |
46 | | The Internet Purple Naked Ladies
Soul// I'm still a tiny bit underwhelmed by this, but it's a solid enough foundation for a great band. //3,5/5 |
47 | | Waka Flocka Flame Flockaveli
WAKA// FLOCKA. FLAME. WAKA FLOCKA FLAME. //5/5 |
48 | | Lupe Fiasco DROGAS Light
Reallythough?// So you fought for label independence to release this? Are you serious? Lasers at least had a point, this one has just three tolerable songs. Embarassing. //1,5/5 |
49 | | Manu Chao Clandestino
Reggae// Classic multilingual reggae with tons of tribal- and roots-inspired sounds. very political and personal at the same time as well. //5/5 ALL DAY |
50 | | Echo Tail The Ancestry
Progressive Rock// So they mixed all of their influences into one tiny little package, added a lot more pop-appeal, made the recording even sharper, added some good to great lyrics, made the hooks even catchier and stayed as progressive in their songwriting as ever. Yeah, this is fire. //4,5/5 |
