05.31.12 | And I used to sing along to Schism and felt edgy |
YankeeDudel
05.31.12 | But really I get music is all subjective but punk, especially pop punk, is very musically uninteresting music to me for the most part. Thats its shtick though. Prog was getting too overwhelming in the 70s so punk was started to let non virtuoso working class musicians play music.
Sure its catchy and fun and but theres only so many times I can listen to the same power chords. Ive always been more of a metal guy for that reason, but punk is still cool to throw on once in a while. Thats my serious opinion on it. Again alot of the stuff on this list doesnt sound much different than what punk bands were doing in the late 70s. |
bungy
05.31.12 | yeah
good pop punk isn't a gay sub genre of punk for children though |

06.01.12 | I remember when I was only 16. It was a sad time because I was legally no longer allowed to listen to pop-punk. The law’s rules stated I was too old and anyone who disobeyed would be locked away for crimes against true punk. it’s too bad I wasn’t around to remember the golden years when the genre came to be through the creation of some gaming device. my favorite band was always the ergs even though all my grown up friends said they were the most childish act in existence. I asked them if they still secretly spun any real pop-punk bands like the Ramones.
they laughed hysterically then told me the only place that garbage belonged was on an American Pie soundtrack. I didn’t know what they were talking about but apparently it came out around the same time as a man named Tony Hawk. One fateful night I came to an epiphany as I was pretending to be my favorite drummer in my room. all this time the subjective genre I loved was nothing more than an uninteresting shtick of power chords. I cried for hours until I heard this unfamiliar sound coming from the radio called tool metal that was all the rage.
I wiped the tears away from my face and basked in the serenity of finally breaking free from my blinded chains. I recently became friends with a guy named perry that still listens to pop-punk way past the limited age. I went over to his house and he showed me his hidden vault filled with the stuff but half of it wasn’t even what he claimed. I tried to tell him that his life was an inferior lie compared to the music that came before it. I had no idea what I was exactly saying but that didn’t matter because I was on a mission to save him from inevitable persecution. |

06.01.12 | Andcas on the warpath always makes me think of:
I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's worth; banks are going bust; shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter; punks are running wild in the street, and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it.
We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat. And we sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be!
We all know things are bad -- worse than bad -- they're crazy.
It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don't go out any more. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we're living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, "Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials, and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone."
Well, I'm not going to leave you alone.
I want you to get mad!
I don't want you to protest. I don't want you to riot. I don't want you to write to your Congressman, because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street.
All I know is that first, you've got to get mad.
You've gotta say, "I'm a human being, goddammit! My life has value!"
So, I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window, open it, and stick your head out and yell,
"I'm as mad as hell,
and I'm not going to take this anymore!!" |

06.01.12 | Saves the Day, Tigers Jaw, and early Brand new are the closest sounding things I've found to State Lines so far. There are some other NY bands that are cool and play with State Lines a lot like Kwyjibo, Tomahawk Chop, and their guitarist's side project, Riverside. None of them are exactly like State Lines but they're similar enough |

06.01.12 | I have all of Saves the Day's and Brand New's discogs, but I'll definitely check out Tiger's Jaw and those other groups. I'm starting to think there's really no band out there quite like State Lines though |
