I appreciate what Cianfrance was trying to do, and by all means, it is a more than
adequate piece of contemporary cinema with visual flourishes abound and more
nuance than you can poke a stick at. Yet, visual prowess aside, the screenwriting was
by all intents of purposes, the cinematic equivalent of a tiny piece of butter (like
those little packets you find at breakfast buffets) spread over a good sized pizza

Really, it seems like a predictable avenue but to be honest, it would have been so much more powerful than the flat, empty conclusion I left with. Look at The Departed - predictable? Indeed.
