10.31.11 | best of luck brother, feel better knowing that I wrote a really shitty essay and got into a bunch of really good schools... what's more important is what you've done over the past few years. now submit that shit son |

10.31.11 | shoulda finished with "8====D" |
iFghtffyrdmns
10.31.11 | yeah dude that's how my friend got into princeton, no bull
just ended that essay with a nice long veiny cock that they had scanned onto the essay file they sent out. full ride, subsidized dorming, living stipends.... the whole shabang |

10.31.11 | if youre good enough to be applying to stanford then you shouldnt be worried, youll end up fine haha
unless, of course, you have no sense of your own worth as a student and your application to stanford is just a crapshoot |
iFghtffyrdmns
10.31.11 | ^that, pretty much |
toxin.
10.31.11 | Haha yeah, robertsona, my grades and test scores are all pretty strong (though that doesn't really help as far as Stanford goes).
And lol Satellite, even if I wanted to, I couldn't, since I have 2, 0, and 1 character(s) remaining on each of the supplemental essays.
@Pit, yeah if by some miracle I get accepted, it'll be a shame it's when Stanford's (likely) back to being a doormat in cfb.
@both inabsentia and iFghtffyrdmns, yeah I'd definitely like to get this off my back, but I still need to add my SS# (don't have it memorized) and only my mom (who's not home at the moment) knows where my card is. So I'm stuck here worrying. |
UnnamedOcean
10.31.11 | When I originally applied for college, my primary choice was a total crapshoot. I had no chance of getting in. I wish I had just thought realistically instead of wasting all that fucking time back then. |

10.31.11 | I have to sumbit my UWisconsin app tomorrow... :)

10.31.11 | Haha, UnnamedOcean, fair enough point, although I wouldn't say I have no chance of getting into Stanford.
And nice and thanks, Romulus.
And whoa, Ignimbrite, isn't UW a public school? UC apps are due in an entire month. heh. And you have a much more compacted schedule than me. I have UC and USC (for the national merit semi-finalists you have to submit earlier) due Dec1 and then a bunch of privates I'll be rejected to due Jan1.
@FDH, eh.
@iFght, lol I'm done worrying actually. Just want to press submit and get it over with.
@robertsona, you'll find people when you post a college app list next year and all these people respond. |
Eko
10.31.11 | there are others robertsona (like me). might apply to Stanford next year too, good luck xtoxin. |
UnnamedOcean
10.31.11 | But yeah good luck getting into Stanford ;) just make sure you have a solid backup. That was the big mistake I made. |

toxin.
10.31.11 | thanks, Eko. And good luck to you, next year. If I am accepted, I'll be sure to give any pointers!
@UnnamedOcean, yeah I have a few backups. You didn't? Ouch :/
FDH, yeah, but honestly like 8 kids at my school had higher scores than mine anyways, so it's kind of meh.
robert, have you taken the SAT yet? My friend and I have both the same SAT score and PSAT score so I think SAT is a good measure of how you'll do on the PSAT. The qualifiers at the my school varied anywhere from 2200ish to 2400 (we had a few at my school), with one outlier at like 2080 |
FromDaHood
10.31.11 | I had my English teachers edit all mine and hitting submit still freaked me out. I actually might have misreported my ACT score on the Common App and I'm freaking out but still haven't checked. |
FromDaHood
10.31.11 | And I got a 197 on the psat but a 2060 on the sat, so it's a pretty accurate measure |
illmitch

robertsona
10.31.11 | the connecticut minimum for nms qualifying is i think 220 this year.
i got a 204 last time (sophomore year) but i actually think i did a lot better this time. i took a
practice sat and got a 2070 and a practice ACT and got a 34. both of those were at the end of
sophomore year |
FromDaHood
10.31.11 | I got a 32 on the act but left my calculator at home, so I should've done a lot better on the math. |
robertsona
10.31.11 | i suck at math and the fact that the ti-89 is prohibited for the ACT makes it even worse. but the rest of the ACT is way better than the SAT i think. the science section is a joke |
UnnamedOcean
10.31.11 | " yeah I have a few backups. You didn't? Ouch :/"
Well I had several other schools which I had been accepted to, but I had all my sights set on that one school. When I didn't get in I was really depressed and had to pick from 3 schools I never wanted to attend in the first place. I ended up being dumped onto a campus I didn't want to be at. The real problem was I just had the wrong attitude. If I had not bothered with that first school I could have focused on another school and learned to like it. |
iFghtffyrdmns
10.31.11 | lol @ all these sub 2200 SAT scores.....

FromDaHood
10.31.11 | I love the science section, it basically made up for my math. The essay tends to rip me apart because I don't write using the 5 paragraph method. Be sure to use it. |

10.31.11 | What did you get demons? 2400? |
iFghtffyrdmns
10.31.11 | hah nah I wish, if I remember correctly I pulled a 2270, it was awhile back though and obviously now it doesn't mean shit anymore haha |
Eko
10.31.11 | I got a 214 on the PSAT sophomore year, really hoping I gut out a few more points for national merit. |
Ignimbrite
10.31.11 | i only got national merit commended... i feel so stupid :[
And yeah, Wisconsin is a public school but priority is due on the 1st, so I figured, what the fuck, anything that'll give me an edge. And UCs aren't actually due until the 30th, but I want to get them in before then.
2150 SAT, might retake in December to get that stupid 660 CR score up. I got 720 math and 770 writing, but that damned critical reading, man... |

10.31.11 | yeah critical reading is definitely tough, don't know how I did as well as I did on that part |
illmitch
10.31.11 | i got a 33 on the act and 1470 on the SAT back when it was just out of 1600, got national merit

yeah I guess I don't blame you. I just like going to lots of good shows and getting laid by strangers so I'm pretty happy in a big city |
Ignimbrite
10.31.11 | I feel ya. I've never been a city person, so the only big exceptions I'm making are UWashington b/c I love Seattle and UCSD b/c it's not really *in* San Diego (which is nice as far as cities go) and it's right by the fucking beach. |
illmitch
10.31.11 | don't be afraid to give big schools a chance. for the longest time i wanted a middle of nowhere school, but honors programs at big schools can give you that environment (small classes with intelligent people) at a big setting with lots of people. that's what i'm doing at Kansas and i absolutely love it |

10.31.11 | I applied to CSULB, SDSU, and both Cal Polys, applying to UC Santa Cruz too. Hopefully my good grades and fairly high test scores will hook me up with lots of cash. |
toxin.
10.31.11 | Whoa this took off.
@robert, you should be fine.
I got a 198 as a sophomore (though on a mock SAT I got a 2120). I didn't even take any classes; I just took like four practice tests and pulled off a 228 on the PSAT second time (Cali's cutoff is 221 I believe). Also got a 2260 first time I took SAT (followed by a 2350 that I currently have) so yeah it's pretty accurate.
If your scores and your writing are of any indication, you should be fine. And as for the math section, all you have to do is look for 30-60-90/45-45-90 triangles on the geometry problems. Application of those is mainly what they're looking for.
and UCSD is really nice, but the campus infrastructure is a little outdated. And UC's are expensive as hell nowadays. I'm pretty sure your state college is a better pick IMO for the money (unless you're a Californian, of course)
And haha acad, I was seriously debating applying to Cornell, but my parents didn't think it was worth the Ivy League tuition and they're the ones paying. Not to mention Cornell is just about next to USC on engineering (IIRC). But thanks, man.
And illmitch, good luck on getting in! Berkeley may very well be my #2, since they're consistently #3 in undergrad. engineering (ahead of CalTech, for what it's worth) behind MIT and Stanford.
@Ignim, haha CR is really a pain. I mean somehow I pulled off an 800 when I took it but I mean that must've been lucky as hell. Good luck getting your score up if you plan on retaking and getting accepted to UW |

10.31.11 | an 800 on CR is absurd I dont even know how thats possible |
toxin.
10.31.11 | @Eko, TBH it's all luck. I got a 720 the first time I took it, and the only studying I did was vocab (this really helps, even in the passage section, since understanding these words in a passage helps you get the nuances) in between the two.
Usually it comes down to one correct and one less-correct answer, and IMO it's luck picking the correct one.
It's too bad my writing went down to 750 that time... I got an 8 on an essay. jeez |

10.31.11 | fuck engineering go to the hotel school |
Wolfhorde
10.31.11 | I'm so fucking happy the university I'm planning to go to has still entrance tests. No need for pseudo-social activities before and all that crap. No one even cares about grades not relevant for the study course. Though I'm still not quite fond on the whole Bachelor-thing. |
toxin.
10.31.11 | Acad, is that what you're studying/studied?
@Woflhorde, it's kind of a meh things. I mean if you got good grades and were active during school (because you want to, not because it's good for college) it's nice to be rewarded. Sounds to me like there's no point even trying in high school except in those select few classes. And I think HS helps weed out the less driven people from the more driven people, at least here in America. (things might be different where you're at.) |
sniper
10.31.11 | 2.1 gpa 2000 SAT. state school, best decision i ever made, so glad i spent all 4 years of hs smoking weed and playing guitar instead of studying. hope you get in to stanford though, i always admired people who attain the kind of measurable success i never could. good luck. |

10.31.11 | i'm from new york and i went to one of the state contract colleges so i paid in-state tuition. my degree can be analogized to most fake bullshit liberal arts lol majors: applied-polisci-business-econ-history-english-bla-bla-bla |
toxin.
10.31.11 | @sniper, I can respect that. I mean to each their own lifestyle choice.
acad, you really had me going there. But that's cool, I mean you didn't have to pay $40K+ yearly for your undergraduate admission so it might actually be a better investment in the long run anyways. |
sniper
10.31.11 | hs was sort of a joke for me but i always went to class and payed attention. being educated is important to me, but since i was and still am almost entirely self-motiviated, i performed well only in classes that interested me. luckily college allows me far more opportunity to take things i like, so i do better these days. |
toxin.
10.31.11 | Yeah, in the long run that approach should work out. As long as you find something you want to do and stick with it, you should be fine. I don't really think the stereotypical Asian approach (I'm Indian) is always the best one, but school came so naturally for me that I didn't/don't really have to worry about it. But definitely good luck on whatever you're doing. |
theacademy
10.31.11 | i don't follow... a better investment than what? |
toxin.
10.31.11 | Like, there's no point getting an Ivy League degree for whatever interest you have if a state degree
works just as well as a $180,000 Ivy League degree.
|
theacademy
10.31.11 | no, no... i got an ivy league degree paying state tuition... cornell has 7 undergrad colleges, 3 of which offer reduced tuition for new yorkers |
theacademy
10.31.11 | but really an ivy league degree doesn't mean anything unless it says princeton, yale, or harvard tho so lol |
sniper
10.31.11 | i'm studying music, which i suppose puts at least some value into the hours of time i spent playing in school. school never exactly came naturally to me, but i was lucky to have parents that were somewhat understanding of the ways i do and do not succeed in classes (which is not to say they didn't annoy the hell out of me trying to motivate me, because they tried and failed for years), and always supportive. when i told them i wanted to major in music they were unsurprised and happy. by comparison, my girlfriend won't study what she really wants because her parents disapprove and i can see clearly how much of a negative impact that kind of situation puts on her, so i can definitely see the argument against too much parental pressure to succeed. it all comes down to the individual though; a self-motivated individual wouldn't even care what his/her parents thought. |
toxin.
10.31.11 | I didn't even know they offered programs like this... I just read the Wikipedia overview and I really had no clue colleges did that. That's a damn good deal then, even if you have a liberal-bs-degree or whatever you said you have. |
theacademy
10.31.11 | yea its all bs

10.31.11 | Yeah that's my parent's attitude to (also the ones I'm applying to). And haha thanks I should probably just go to sleep and let this list die since I'm done applying anyways
And @sniper, that sounds like fun. I'm not sure what kind of career opportunities come out of that unless you plan on being a fulltime musician but at least you're doing something you want to do. And yeah like parental pressure sucks sometimes, but there is a reason why parents want what they want. I'm sure they have her best interests at heart. |

Nothing to worry about with Stanford... as long as you don't sound like every other smart Asian kid and play piano or violin. ;) |
