My Top 10 Dream Theater Songs
I created this list in response to a couple of other Dream Theater lists made recently. I felt that a few gems were being ignored! Let me know what you guys think. Note that complete absence of 'ballads.' |
1 | Home
I love the weird kindve start that reminded me of Wherever I May Roam - albeit better done (imo). The best song on Scenes, and goes perfectly with Dance of Eternity afterwards. This song doesnt seem to get a huge amount of recognition and I have no idea why - its a perfect song. |
2 | Schmedley Wilcox
I dont think they've actually recorded this in a studio yet (although its on Chaos in Motion).. If they have let me know! Its an unbelievable example of what DT can do. I cant get enough of this song the way they combine all the best bits from their 'epics', I was stoked when they played this live when I saw them. |
3 | The Glass Prison
Straight up fast awesome prog metal. |
4 | This Dying Soul
One of their heavier songs, Train of Thought gets a lot of hate around the place but its one of my favorite DT albums. |
5 | Metropolis Part 1
Another song that seems to cop a fair bit of hate within critic circles but its definitely a fan favorite. No DT gig is complete without it, and I love their Pull Me Under/Metropolis combination they've been playing. Cuts out the shitty start of Metropolis really well. |
6 | The Shattered Fortress
I love the way they have tied up the AA suite into this and summarised the whole thing. Its a great great song, and grew on me after my first impressions which were not good - I thought DT were recycling. Now I just believe that they really did well with this song. |
7 | Fatal Tragedy
Next best on Scenes. Scenes was the first album I picked up of DT's and this was probably the first song that I got a huge kick out of. |
8 | Octovarium
It has a waaaaay too long intro. Other people really enjoy it, I just think its a little too long-winded for my tastes. After the first 6 minutes or whatever it is though its an awesome song. |
9 | Erotomania
Erotomania is just a weird, cool example of what DT can pull off when they try something different. |
10 | The Count of Tuscany
Also low like Oct because of the long-winded middle passage. If that wasnt in there this song would be much higher, but as it stands its still an unbelievable song. I almost removed this for Change of Seasons. |
