09.25.13 | " It's hard for me to explain why I love vinyl, it's sort of like more of a physical interaction with music rather than just mp3 that are just digital files. It's collectible, and has more of an aesthetic appeal than CD. It's more of an experience, a piece of history you could say. It's sort of like a connection you have with a piece of art and being able to hold the vinyl, read the lyrics on the insert. It's also valuable and is usually worth a lot more as time goes on. The best way I can put it is that it has sentimental value to me. It's a hobby that keeps me happy and I'm always excited to see what vinyl I'll get next. It may be viewed as an outdated piece of technology but it's more than that to me. Take it as you will, I get why people think it's strange, expensive and pointless but the experience I get from all of these things combined vastly outweigh the expense of it all."
Something I said a long the lines to one of my friends
But yea nice list, I want 1, 6 and 7 on vinyl too |

09.25.13 | great start to your collection. i prefer vinyl for both the sound and the fact that it can't be cut up into pieces - it's how it was meant to be, an actual album. some of mine:
Intronaut - Habitual Levitations 2xLP
Fleetwood Mac - Rumors
Gamma Ray - Majestic /1500
The Police - Ghost in the Machine
The Ocean - Pelagial 4xLP
GY!BE - F#A# (with crushed penny etc)
Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith
Deep Purple - Fireball (1971) |

09.25.13 | Couldn't agree more, Crimson : ) I love flipping records over, or changing records. Def more of an interactive experience with vinyl, and that's what I love the most about it. I have a fairly large cd collection but I always find myself spinning records over popping CDs in. |

09.25.13 | I like vinyl as much as the next person, but lets face it i have like 300 CD's and maybe 4 vinyl so |

09.25.13 | @train - Just something about searching for vinyl on Discogs that does it for me. Love finding rare shit and then finally getting it in the mail. Vinyl pretty much restored my love for music cuz I was def getting jaded. Turns out I just needed to take a different approach to rekindle the flame. |

09.25.13 | I'm going to explain the technical difference as best as I can in a simple way.
CD's technically have better sound by quite a large margin. The biggest difference is that CD's use digital stereo while Vinyl uses analog stereo so you will hear actual real un altered stereo when you're playing your vinyl through a half decent set of speakers. Analog Stereo sounds more natural and full for the most part, but that's really going to depend on the player, the print of the vinyl and the speakers you are using. CD has a more clean and polished sound and can be played at higher decibels without clipping. So it's really just down to preference, but technically down to preference. Personally I just like the natural warmth of vinyl but I listen to CD's 90% of the time anyways. |

09.25.13 | I have a bunch of Original Cat Stevens presses. I also have an original Elliott Smith Either/Or and an XO |

09.25.13 | Vinyl any day of the week... great collection, hope you got a good system to play it with. love me some rare vinyl, too.
I only two of note, though (rarities) both first pressing's:
Nick Cave - Boatman's Call
Led Zeppelin IV (was my dad's) |

09.25.13 | My pops also has that Zep album. He has tons of vintage vinyl that I hope to "acquire" someday. |

09.25.13 | I only recently started collecting vinyl, maybe a little over a year and a half. But I love searching for rare presses most people don't have. I'll probably post mine here soon but only when my collection isn't stored in three different countries.
My dad has had a lot of his vinyl stolen like Pink Floyd original pressing (DSotM) and a lot of other rare stuff. Good thing he still has plenty. |

09.25.13 | Vinyl is cool but I'm really not sure it SOUNDS better. But either way, it's definitely wayyyyy cooler and much more of an experience to own |

09.25.13 | finally a good vinyl list. i'm curious as to how much you paid for 10. |
Parallels
09.25.13 | "CD's technically have better sound by quite a large margin."
what
A vinyl is superior, but only if your equipment (including the record player, the needle, the vinyl itself, and the preamp [if separate]) are not worn or low quality, and the vinyl itself was actually cut from the master recordings. Otherwise you're just listening to the same copy cut that they used on CD (which is very common on newer vinyls btw) but with the different recording process. Unless you've got the money to get some quality shit and you know which vinyls are from the master sets, then yeah, CD's are superior. |
joshuahuntkc
09.25.13 | Parallels. That isn't accurate. Yes a vinyl is cut from the master, that is true, but the quality of the cut is far from perfect, and it never will be perfect, so you are not getting anywhere near the quality of the master. You could have the nicest equipment in the world and run a vinyl and then put a CD through the same system and it will sound much closer to the master I promise you that.
I've been a professionally certified audio engineer for a while and I've done a decent amount of spectrum analysis to support this. CD's have a wider and more accurate wave spectrum. The reason vinyl sounds better is because of the application of analog stereo, and 90% of the people spinning vinyls nowadays are using electronic tables and amps in there system, so you wouldn't even actually be getting analog stereo. |
Parallels
09.26.13 | lol yeah i use an analog stereo sooooo. Plus my stuff was pretty accurate, except for saying that vinyls are necessarily better. I know they aren't always, but don't make it sound like CD's are always better cause that's bullshit.
I'm pretty sure analog recorded CD's don't capture the waveform well at all compared to a vinyl. But yeah digital sucks and I should've phrased my first post better. |
joshuahuntkc
09.26.13 | The thing is they are more accurate, CD's have more accurate sound. That's that, it is literally a fact not an opinion. people like the quality of vinyls because it is different and because it's analog and true stereo, that dosn't make it technically better. you lose entire spectrums of the audio on vinyl and it isn't as crisp, its just more earthy. that's all. im done with this thread. |
demigod!
09.26.13 | man i would kill for 10 that sounds fucking rad |
Parallels
09.26.13 | "The thing is they are more accurate, CD's have more accurate sound."
There is no proof of that anywhere, I'm not just gonna take your word for it even if you are a professionally certified audio engineer.
I'm just gonna drop this off:

09.26.13 | i prefer either to digital, but it depends on my mood. if im doing chores around the house I put a cd in the tray. If it is going to be a late night full of essay writing and math i put some godspeed on the record player and get to work. |
joshuahuntkc
09.26.13 | CD is still digital, its just WAV files which are lossless as opposed to MP3 which suck ass |
TREO5
09.26.13 | vinyl is about the experience, man. |

09.26.13 | vinyl is about the experience, man. [2]
it's more ritualistic in nature to carefully take out the record, place it gently on the turntable, and wait in anticipation as the needle goes across the first few seconds of silence... It just feels more precious when music listening is done that way.
As for sound, it's fairly negligible to the overall quality, except a scratch on vinyl fill fuck it up, but a scratch on CD has virtually (haha) no affect. Again, that still adds to the care you must take with a vinyl record. |
TREO5
09.26.13 | yeah i agree with that. I have an old Bob Marley album of my dads that has scratches in a few places, and I've memorized the timing so that i can stomp on the floor really hard in order to skip it. listening to a cd also has that ritual experience with me now as well. I enjoy lugging out my giant ass case and flipping through all of the cds I own to get to the cd I want to listen to. |

09.26.13 | I got a few neurosis vinyls that are pretty cool:
through silver in blood (green/yellow splatter), times of grace (plain black), the eye of every storm (grey swirl) and
given to the rising (clear w/ silver smoke). all original pressings |
sncold
09.26.13 | I have over 300 CDs and a little over 100 vinyl. It's no contest, vinyl sounds better to me. Any time I listen to a vinyl record and think it doesn't sound much better than the CD version, I play both back to back, and the differences are remarkable. CDs definitely have their place, I won't disagree with that, but I've yet to find anything that I prefer listening to on CD. |
FrozenVain
09.26.13 | I have a bunch of CD's and LP's but I can't decide. My father has over 5000 vinyls, however, and he obviously think it's better. Nice list. |
TREO5
09.26.13 | Playing devils advocate a little, but it is nice to be able to put a cd in and not have to mess with it again. It can be annoying flipping over an album, taking it out, putting it in its sleeve, taking the second LP out of its sleeve, putting it on, and then eventually having to flip that over as well. With long LPs like Lift your skinny fist or Between the Heart and the Synapse, I am rarely able to get comfortable or in my writing groove on essays when I have to get up 2-3 times an hour. |
sncold
09.26.13 | I try not to listen to vinyl when I'm doing anything else but listening. It's an experience. So doing essays and whatnot, I'd definitely just use CDs. |

09.26.13 | Dude, Buzz, I'm pretty jealous about The Eye Of Every Storm vinyl you have. I'm gonna grab the same one off Discogs but its something like $200. Totally worth it tho cuz that record is fucking unreal. |
