Jash Does: Rap

Since coming back I've noticed a lot more users here are into rap/hip-hop, so I wanted to make a list with some under-the-radar classics as well as modern releases I feel are essentials or need more exposure.
1Sonic Sum
The Sanity Annex

These sprawling, hypnotic beats are a perfect backdrop for the gentle stream of consciousness flows that glide above. One of the late 90's most overlooked albums.
2Little Brother
The Listening

Fun and funky, if you love 90s's era hip-hop and haven't heard this get amongst it now!
3People Under the Stairs
O.S.T.

The product of commercial pressure, world travels, and deep crate digging paved the way for one of the 2000's greatest albums.
4Noto
Death My Irony Surpasses All Others

Noto's self-reflective and retrospective rhymes are paired perfectly with his own production compiled of nostalgic samples, all of which are woven together by brief interludes and field recordings to produce an incredibly smooth listen.
5Lord Jah-Monte Ogbon
Beautifully Black

I exactly can't put my finger on what draws me to this release so much, but it's been in constant rotation since it dropped. Ogbon's rapping is just as infectious as Navy Blue's production.
6lojii
lo&behold

This one is for anyone who got down with Saba's "Care For Me", his latest EP was fire too so I'm really looking forward to the next LP.
7wiki
Oofie

Wiki's impeccable storytelling and confident flow are paired with great production, as well as some fantastic features, all coming together to stand as one of the better albums of 2019.
8Mick Jenkins
Elephant In The Room

Mick has an ear for a good hook and good beats. With his ability to write flows as catchy as his hooks, this record is not one to overlook.
9Roc Marciano and The Alchemist
The Elephant Man's Bones

When two veterans collide. Uncle Al and Marciano weave together to create an absolute standout in both their already impeccable discography's.
10Ka
A Martyr's Reward

An incredibly overlooked OG of the NY scene, though that's probably exactly what he wants. The lyricism and beats are top-notch, a good starting point for anyone wanting to dive further into his work.
11Dr. Yen Lo
Days With Dr. Yen Lo

Ka once again flexes his lyrical prowess, but this time over an album of beats produced by Preservation (who produced last year's incredible Billy Woods album 'Aethiopes').
12Navy Blue
Song of Sage: Post Panic

The skater turned rapper/producer comes into his own on this record. The lyrics and flows here are more mature than his previous effort, but his finesse as a producer really starts to shine on this release, showing why multiple rappers have asked him to produce for them since.
13Fly Anakin
Frank

Fly Anakin's nasally and infectious flow is paired perfectly with smooth production. Any fans of the '90s sound looking for a modern twist can land here.
14Pink Siifu
GUMBO'!

After a detour to his more punk side, Pink Siifu returns to his rapping routes and flexes all his different flows over a varied collection of beats, all while maintaining a confident swagger that makes his detour to punk make perfect sense.
15Billy Woods
Church

Billy Woods has been an underground New York staple for two decades now, and when he's not curating forward-thinking releases on his label Backwoodz Studioz he's continuing to showcase his incredible ability to weave narratives over whatever beat is beneath him. This isn't my favourite release by him, nor his most impressive, but the fact that he followed up the near-perfect Aethiopes with this in the same year is a real testament to how talented he really is.
16Moor Mother and Billy Woods
Brass

The incredible chemistry of Billy Woods and Moor Mother's off-kilter storytelling is taken on a beautifully chaotic journey from the avant-garde production.
17Elucid
I Told Bessie

Elucid has been a solid companion to Billy Woods in Armand Hammer for some time now, but with "I Told Bessie" he finally comes into his own as a solo artist. His wayward flow is paired perfectly with every production choice, and more importantly, he sounds more focused and direct than ever.
18Armand Hammer
Paraffin

This is the album where Billy Woods and Elucid's project fully realized their potential. The production is as jarring as their fervorous delivery.
19Milo
So The Flies Don't Come

Lyrical gymnastics, cultural references, and innuendos, all done with an incredibly smooth flow over immaculate production.
20R.A.P. Ferreira
purple moonlight pages

The second coming of Milo, with production from a backing band consisting of two iconic LA producers Mr. Carmack and Kenny Segal, alongside LA bassist Mike Parvizi. Rory sounds as ferocious as ever sliding in between each musical note with grace.
21Kenny Segal, Serengeti
Ajai

Two underground hip-hop greats join to create a masterclass of vibe and storytelling. Serengeti's storytelling is soundtracked perfectly by Segal's ever-evolving beats.
22Westside Gunn
Pray for Paris

Westside Gunn is (in my opinion) the most important player in rap right now. His own output is incredibly consistent, and his curation as an executive producer, label owner, and fashion designer is next to none in the scene. As solid as all his records are, there's something about Pray For Paris that just sticks out to me, and I would say it's must listen for any modern rap fan.
23Mach-Hommy
Pray For Haiti

This a perfect example of Westside Gunn's impressive vision for curation. A previously tired-sounding Mach-Hommy is born again and drop's by far the most impressive album of his career, the run off which produced the almost equally as good Balens Cho (Hot Candle's).
24Armani Caesar
THE LIZ 2

Griselda's first lady, Armani raps with ferocity over another perfectly curated album from Westside Gunn, further proving herself as more than the sum of her previous endeavors.
25Rome Streetz
KISS THE RING

One of the best new exports from NY, Rome Streetz casually murders every beat on this album and leaves you wanting more.
