Prog epic preliminaries

Welcome to all contestants, and visitor players. We're about to start the tenth prog rock tourney counting those done by Friday13th, and the second one done by me. When you're ready, fill a blurb about your knight. I'll try to recrute between 16 and 20 candidates. A special thanks to Friday13th for the inspiration.
1Von Hertzen Brothers
Love Remains the Same

Though steeped in some classic rock themes and sounds, the Von Hertzen Brothers have melted a collection of heavily layered and complex yet highly melodic songs in an album which feel fresh, original and which has an amazingly consistent quality. I consider this album a modern masterpiece. It shows that prog rock is alive. It's classic symphonic rock meets pop and alternative rock . Compositions are catchy and easy-to-listen but complex and ambitious. This music really has a potential to attein commercial success despite having prog roots.

SUDAMÉRICA - O EL REGRESO A LA AURORA

Time to get comfortable, grab a bucket of churros, put on your Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2 and strap yourself in for a 98 minute journey of South American influential prog. This Argentine 'Rainbow' utilise traditional, orchestral, as well as Andean instruments over a vast array of musical styles, from prog rock, prog folk, free jazz, jazz rock, psychedelic rock and Andino rock. Some might even call this a Latino prog opera. It might be long, but this double album is of utmost importance in Latino prog circles, it's a huge surprise it only has my 5 rating representing it on Sput.

Interpose+

Goes in on the bombastic side of prog that I almost never go for anymore, but there is a tastefulness to quite a few of the melodic lines that really hit a nice balance between more proggy and emotive, nice song to song variance, some amazingly textured basslines, and vocals that wouldn't sound out of place on a city pop record (prog is no excuse for anemic vox!!)

4Terutsugu Hirayama
Castle of Noi

Unintentionally closely related to last year's Novella contestant (this is the guitarist from said band), this little nugget has worked it's way firmly into my favorites the last couple of weeks. Japanese progrock with a Ghibli-esque vibe at times, despite this coming out three years before Castle in the Sky made its way to the big screen.

I love the recurring themes and clever songwriting. It's also very dynamic, starting with a single-like progsong and including a mandatory weird Japanese song with what I can only imagine is animals singing, an instrumental, ballad and epic finisher tying the sweet and short 36 minutes together. More than anything else to me though, the album just oozes charm and playfulness. Enjoy!

5Kostas Tournas
Eternal Fields [Απέραντα Χωράφια]

In some ways I regard "Endless Fields" to be a "prog rock archetype": an early '70s album, written in its entirety by a boygenius (Tournas was 23 at the time), regarding the struggles and pointlessness of existing in the harsh modern world (it was during the military Junta), with recurring themes and reprises, varying between rock, jazz, and classical music (recorded with the Greek National Opera Orchestra). The lyrics [found in the description] are in Greek, but I suppose you can google-translate them, and see the longing for an idyllic past, the angst of wasted youth, and the journey of the hero unfolding. Musically, it's diverse, daring, rich, and dark, but also nostalgic in many parts.

6Medina Azahara
Paseando por la Mezquita

Sorry to anyone who may be tired of my pigeonholed taste in recs for this comp, but here we are again and here is another great Spanish prog album I have grown fond of. This one leans into more symphonic sounds but still has those noticeably flamenco-influenced moments throughout. There is also use heavier electric sound to it that adds quite a bit of grit. Hope you guys enjoy!

7Yesterdays
Colours Caffè

Prog can be a tiring genre. It's easy to find a lot of very concept heavy, wild albums that ask a lot of close attention. Yesterdays go the opposite route. They are able to write catchy prog that comes off as an easy listen, but don't miss the mark in terms of complexity and interesting arrangements. This band is hungarian and based in Hungary and Romania.
Summer is coming, and this album fits right into the season.

8Jorge Palma
Com Uma Viagem Na Palma Da Mão

Before Palma’s breakthrough as one of the most memorable pop rock songwriters in Portugal, his debut record is a prog rock fuelled with social commentary. Musically, the piano is surely the main focus with fantastic flute arrangements.

9Onsegen Ensemble
Fear

I keep finding myself coming back to this one. It's a cinematic, world-building excursion melding heavy psychedelic grooves and spaghetti western chamber rock. Varied percussion, horn sections, and immense choral harmonies sustain and elevate the lush atmosphere founded on conventional rock instrumentation, sometimes reaching vivid, Morricone-esque heights. I like how the overall spiritual tone, repetitive elements, and undulating orchestration draw me into a meditative headspace.

Leviathan

Norwegian multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Sigurd Tonna Lühr (apart from showing great creativity with his bandname) is a proficient musical chameleon, having created Music from Surf Rock to experimental electronics and everything inbetween.
Leviathan is a concept album about lovecraftian myths. Less dark than one would expect regarding the subject matter, but lush and atmospheric keyboard driven lightly psych-tinged Prog. While it is at the lower end of the musical complexity scale in the Prog universe, the atmosphere is rich and dense. It's an album to immerse yourself into!

11Area
Maledetti

Area is one of the best Italian prog acts, the most original of all, a true unique band. They released five amazing works, their first five studio albums, the albums with Demetrio Stratos, before he passed away too soon. The band always lived up to its name, Area-International Popular Group. They were able to fuse the jazz and the avant-garde music to the popular music. But, besides that, they had another thing, the unique amazing voice o Demetrio serving their political lyrics. My first choices for this tourney would be their debut or "Crac!". But, that wasn't possible because both has more than 30 votes. So, I chose "Maledetti", actually my third favourite album of Area.

13Fish
Raingods With Zippos

Fish needs no presentation. He was the front man of Marillion one of the best and pioneer bands of prog. He have been doing an impressive career out of Marillion. For me Raingods With Zippos is one of his best albums, my choice for this tourney.

14Spirit
Son of Spirit

With Randy Kalifornia Band leader/vocals,/ripping lead guitar and his step dad on drums. Because of Randy's irratic behavior and drug issues his original classic psych band folded, most people neglect to look Further into his post original band releases. With only his Step dad as a hold over they made 4 pretty awesome albums. Startiung with The SPirit of 76, Son of Spirit, Farther ALong, and Future Dream(with still another set of new members). They transformed from a psyche band to a more prog style band, with simple songs fueled by great guitar and jazz drums and some spaced out intramantal jams. At first listen you may start to think that this is straight forward rock but by the time you get to Dont Go Away the album is in full stride and hits the apex at The Other song. I hate when people tell me to listen to an album 3-4 times before making any first judgements.

15Buon Vecchio Charlie
Buon vecchio Charlie

I pick the only LP by the Buon Vecchio Charlie. It was recorded back in 1971 but only released in 1990 in Japan (Italy followed in 1999!). You can totally hear the classic prog sound: classical music (Hall of the Mountain King is the base for the first track), jazzy detours (with sax and flute included), acoustic guitars, and of course rocking out. It also has "historic" value because the band started out as session men for super famous singer Claudio Baglioni, and for the recording of this album they got Richard Benson for the vocals. Benson was a TV presenter who later became a huge television meme. You'd never guess he was singing here. An obscure gem. Even the artwork looks like it should be iconic. Who knows, maybe they could have become big had they published it in '71.

16Schizofrantik
Oddities

https://schizofrantik.bandcamp.com/album/oddities

Just found out about these guys a few years ago, and I've been a big fan of them since. They're an underground German progressive rock/metal outfit with avant-garde and experimental tendencies. This particular album runs the gamut of sounds and styles, with elements reminiscent of Gentle Giant, Beardfish, Blotted Science, Mr. Bungle, and many more artists. The members themselves are also incredibly talented and versatile, capable of switching between genres or dynamics at only a moment's notice. Enjoy!
