Camel Moonmadness
Camel The Snow Goose
Ahhh.. The SnowGoose!.. This is a masterpiece of symphonic prog rock. 30 years
ago, I heard about a terrific band called Camel. They said 'SnowGoose' would be
the best way to start. Since then this cd is never far from my cd player. It
never gets old. I still listen to Camel regularly. Sooo inspired songwriting,
sooo intense, beautiful music. There are my top 5 albums:

'SnowGoose' = 'MoonMadness' > Mirage > 'Harbour Of Tears' = 'A Nod And A Wink'...

If you love old Genesis, Premiata Forneria Marconi(PFM), Yes, Maneige(Quebec)
You need this. Latimer is truly a genius as a composer, guitar player,
and singer for this fantastic band. Highly Recommended !

The Who Live At Leeds Deluxe Edition
This is arguably the best live album since rock'n roll is on the
map. What a performance. Everything is top notch. Performed in early
seventies. The Who LIVE!!! Nothing less. Make sure to get the double cd
set (Deluxe Edition). Also available on DVD.

4.5 superb
Arcade Fire Funeral
Camel Harbour of Tears
This is wonderful. I cannot put it in words. Even in french grrr
It's not a track by track album. All the songs flow together for it's a concept album. Andrew Latimer shines on this release. Total time: 62 min. Unfortunately the end arrives too fast. Yes it's that good. The record ends with almost 15 minutes of near-silent waves of the sea. And it's the only flaw. I'd rather like 5 minutes of nearby sound of waves crashing, and get one or two other songs instead. Overall, it's another incredible work from Camel.
Camel A Nod and A Wink
This is the last studio album from Camel, for the leader Andrew Latimer has had health problems, and so he suffered from fatigue since then. I read in Wikipedia that a new full lenght album is intended. And it's confirmed !...I'm gonna pray for that. According to a rumour their original drummer Andy Ward will come back. He's so amazing, and Latimer is 'waiting' for his return since 'Nude'(1981)album. 'A Nod And A Wink' was
dedicated to Peter Barden (keyboard) who died in january 2002.

Hope you get better Andrew. I know you won't give up. You are such a prolific composer...and your music sounds sooooo great to me. I can't wait for your next one. Take care.

-- An inconditional fan. Hands down.

Highlights for 'A Nod And A Wink' : The title track, Fox Hill, Squigely Fair, For Today.

I love it! Stunning live album. This 'Oman' version is probably my all time favorite

Genesis The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Fantastic album. If you appreciate this one, check out for the must have '' Genesis Archives Vol. I ''(1967-75)including The Whole story of Rael ...LIVE . They are top shape.
I just can't get enough of this live version. And yes I'm a huuuuge Genesis fan. Since late 70's. Keep on prog!
Genesis Genesis Archive, Vol. 1: 1967-1975
Genesis Seconds Out
God I'm surprised nobody wrote anything on here. 'Seconds Out' is one of the
best live ever recorded in prog history. I stay speechless. You know what...
I would like to write a review on this. But my mother tongue is french and so
I would need help to translate and correct the grammar, syntax, etc.. properly.

My best friend is both english and french, and he said he could translate the
whole thing for me. Would be cool.

Genesis A Trick Of The Tail
Gentle Giant In a Glass House
Masterpiece!! This is where I started with GG, in late 70's,
and since then I own almost everything they have released. Each
musicians play at least 2 instruments, and they all have a classic
formation. Their music is complex, it has frequent changes in tempo,
frequent use of syncopation and non-standard time-signatures, multi-
part vocal harmonies etc etc...

Their live album 'Playing The Fool' is definately a good way
to get into GG. It's one of the best live albums in the whole
prog rock history, along with 'Seconds Out'(Genesis),'Bursting
Out'(Jethro Tull)...

'Playing The Fool' demonstrates so well the band's complex
musicianship and rare talent. John Weathers' drum playing
gives a solid rock flavour to their eventful music. After
the live album I would recommend in order;

'Acquiring The Taste', 'In A Glass House', 'Free Hand'
and 'Octopus'
.

Let it grow on you. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Best titles are 'Miles Beyond','Sanctuary','Hope'... Musicians are top notch. No vocals needed. After about 30 years of listening, this album didn't get old. Production is pretty good. And it is brillant, electric as hell. John McLaughlin and Billy Cobham are gods.

Neal Morse Sola Scriptura
Progressive Rock is not dead. Neal Morse have done it again. Release after release
he shows how great composer he is. I can't get enough of his prog material. Neal
Morse was former and soul of Spock's Beard. Since then, he was always surrounded
by talented musicians, and guess what, best compositions have to come. With Mike
Portnoy on drums, it adds a lot to the high level, uplifting music of Morse. If
you listen to Dream Theater only for Portnoy skills, You ain't seen nothing yet!
Try this, and keep on progging !

Dead Can Dance Spleen and Ideal
This album is much more accessible than the first one. It still sounds
a bit punk/alternative. Keep on mind that Brendan Perry's roots are around
punk music, as you can detect in their songs. The band had developped their
sound and identity with this album. Here is where they introduced their
'medieval' style, and it's a good thing.

Highlights for me are 'Mesmerism',
'Advent ' and ' Avatar'. However, the best way to start with DCD is 'Aion'.
It's by far their best effort and it's easy to get into. Followed by 'Into
The Labyrinth' and of course, the stunning live one 'Toward The Within'.
Gorgeous music. Enjoy.

'Black Sunday' rules, while 'Flyingdale Flying' and 'Protect and Survive'
are highlights as well. Featuring Eddie Jobson (UK, Roxy Music, Curved Air)
as a guest, playing violins and keys in most of the tracks. Drummer Mark Craney
(Jean-Luc Ponty) had replaced Barrie who left the band shortly after his friend
John Glascock, Tull bassist (R.I.P.) died. Soon he realised he was unable to get
over it.

'A' is not perfect, but I still enjoy it. Great album.
And it took another 15 years before Jethro Tull released

Neal Morse One
Yeah, that rocks. I'm a huge fan of the multi-instrumentalist progger Neal
Morse. The Spock's Beard's Heart & Soul. He did an amazing job with them,
and when he left for a solo career to proceed in the name of God, I thought
game was over.

But guess what, I do prefer his solo works. If you can't stand the God
oriented lyrics but you like Spock's Beard, get over it and give it a try:
the high level musicianship worth a listen. And don't forget his other prog
works: His first solo release 'Testimony', 'Sola Scriptura', and '?' as well.

Neal, God bless you, and keep proggin!! You make solid and majestic prog rock,
and so you keep it alive in a fantastic way. I just pray for another full lenght
prog album. I cannot wait. With Mike Portnoy if you please..

I hope my english is not to bad, so you won't have to translate lol. Ciao

Excellent in general, but I dislike the way it starts and how it ends either. These songs are kind of filler and boring stuff. For the rest, my less fav is easily Dea Pecuniae. Then, most of the songs are Amazing. I prefer by far the energic 'Be Live' DVD.

The Pineapple Thief Little Man
Pineapple Thief manage to finish their albums on a good way. No exception here with the sooo beautifulll 'We Love You'. No doubt one of my fave of theirs. Don't let its beat machine intro scare you off from this. Cause when the whole thing really starts, you're gonna be highly seduced. I tell you. Good 'til the last drop.

'Wilting Violet' is a cool, soft post-rock-like driven by a quiet piano. The beautiful music builds and builds until all the instruments get higher. Bruce keeps on repeating 'I wish I gave a better answer'. Strong one. 'Run A Mile' is pretty nice too...to name a few. This is a good way to start IMO. Hope my english is clear enough. Merci.

Both merged songs 'Big Eyed Fish' and 'Bartender' fit together so
well.'Don't Drink The Water' is so powerful in this double live cd, same
for 'When The World Ends', 'JTR' and a sensitive extended version
of 'Angel'..among others. Maybe it's just me but I have noticed a slight
weakness: The playing of maestro Carter Beauford. He played a little too safely.
He did no mistakes at all, but he was slightly lazy on drums for my taste. That
was a personal deception, but I did get over it pretty fast.'Cause hey, this is
a DMB show! Setlist could have been better, but you can't always get what you want.
Carter Beauford is still in my top 10 modern drummers, don't get me wrong. Overall
it's an excellent live performance, sound is top notch and musicians are top shape,

The Pineapple Thief 12 Stories Down
Okay. Let me fix a good point; It's not that '12 Stories Down' doesn't exist, but it's much forgettable since it's only preview version of '10 Stories Down'. It's mostly the same track list, but it contains only unmastered mixes plus a so so bonus disc called '8 Days Later'. Avoid that shit and let's focus on the one you actually have to look for; '10 Stories Down'.

You cannot miss it; Its last two tracks are the highlights. They are pure bliss and they fit so well together. And I appointed: 'Light Up Your Eyes'('I Will' and 'Who Will'). The way the first part (I Will) builds to an emotional high is incredible. The second part (Who Will) has a real Porcupine Tree feel to it. 'Wretched Soul' is a good rocker and it has to be my third favorite one. 'It's Just You And Me' is a nice emotional laid back track with a catchy chorus a la Elliott Smith. Not to forget 'Clapham'. Probably the most accessible on the cd. Very catchy, radio friendly and a highlight.

The post-rock like 'Prey For Me' is not bad at all. 'The Answers' and
'The World I Always Dreamed Of' get better with every listens. Again, both had
to be very Porcupine Tree like but take note that Bruce Soord didn't know anything at all about the PT works up to their last release 'Thigthly Unwound' if I remember well.

Steven Wilson himself has contacted Bruce Soord with the intention to protect his own rights and while they talked about their so-called similar musical approach, Wilson has soon realized that Soord did never flirt by any means with Porcupine Tree. Period.

Btw If you're just getting into The Thiefs, better start somewhere else. Whilst it's a nice album,'10 Stories Down' is probably the hardest one to get into. Try 'Variations
On A Dream'
and/or 'Little Man' before this.

Gentle Giant The Missing Piece
The track #6 'As Old As You're Young' is a classic GG song and it rules.
But sadly the album is a bit disjointed. Next to previous albums, 'Missing Piece'
is by far their less consistent one. The way they have put kind of a disbalanced
'pop- folk-medieval' blend here and there didn't convince me and did kill most of
their best tracks on here (the rocker 'Mountain Time' is a good example).

By flirting with a more simple sound, their so-called rocker
songs sound like pre-production stuff from a band in search for their
own sound. No surprising, their fanbase ceased to grow. In an attempt to
attract a wider audience, the band decided to sreamline its sound and they
failed in so. Commercial music is not their thing as we know it.

On the other hand, let say their more laid back songs are still
'in the vain' of their classic works. Band members are still killer
musicians and they still offer few magical moments and awesome
musical arrangements. If you can get over its cheese it's still
worth a listen.

I used to skip nearly half of the songs on here. It contains a
few good but just good tracks. 'Two Weeks In Spain' is a pretty good
song, 'Memories Of Old Days' and 'For Nobody' as well. Not to mention
this release is a big disappointment after its predecessor, the solid
'Interview'.

Felt the end was near . 'Missing Piece' and the two followers 'Giant
For A Day' and 'Civilian' have revealed they had nothing much more to offer.
The end of GG had to come. They had sadly split shortly after those three meh
albums.

Overall, only for GG unconditionals and I hardly give it a 3/5

Hope my english is ok.

Look; They-Just-Don't-Want-A-Normal-Singer.

Here is what I thought about the 'vocalist' Jens Kidman when I started to
try to get into this impressive band:

Jens Kidman has brought his contribution to Meshuggah since their debut.
Isn't it time to let somebody else take the micro... I even don't consider him
like a singer. The only good thing I see with his 'singing' is that he used it
to add a little something 'more' for the rhythm section and that's it.

What if Meshuggah would decide to stop the raspy screamings for a while?...What
else but a new frontman to fill the gap and improve their synergy?..Who would be
the man?.. Eric Kalsbeek (Textures) without hesitation. Kalsbeek's voice can reach
impressive range and dexterity. He has a very enjoyable voice, from clean to brutal.
IMO this guy would be a huge inspiration to bring fresh air, more depth, more colors
to Meshuggah.

By adding some emotional and melodic elements into their music Meshuggah
would promptly enlarge their horizon and their public. I seriously think that
Kalsbeek could contribute to uplift the musicianship and the whole thing. I
like a lot some of Meshuggah's songs a lot but they badly need a more versatile
singer to explore in a more human approach and more inspiration. This guy would
be welcome and... okay, only in my dreams, okay.

And then, when I woke up I realized the whole band is there to stay and they
will continue to offer their 'in-your-face' complex form of metal with their
devoted colleague and friend Jens Kidman. Like it or not their vocalist is a
part of it. I'm sure with few more listens, I'm gonna tolerate most of his vocals.
Sing us a song Jens.

Hope my english is ok. Sorry if not.
And yes, Catch 33 is a solid album that still grows on me. I feel it deserves 3.5 or even 4 .. eventually
