Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits
I watched The Graduate at a recent screening for my film class and ever since have had these tunes stuck in my head. There's some real great stuff on here. I'm not a big fan of greatest hits albums in particular, as I think they take away from the purpose of constructing a REAL album. I do have to admit though that this duo really could bring intensity to such a mellow and warm sound. | | 2 |  | The Decemberists
Castaways and Cut-outs
Though I would argue that this album is fairly lopsided, the first half more than makes up for the latter. "Leslie Ann Levine", "Architect", and "July, July!" are catchy as all hell and extremely upbeat. I listened to Desaparacidos' lone album a few weeks before this one, and I have to admit I like Connor Oberst's latest outing a bit more. What's most interesting about it is how the acoustic sound slowly takes over a crunchier beginning, yet its heaviness as a whole remains intact. The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady
All I can say is "Holy Crap"; I feel slightly ashamed of having only just heard this. This album blew me away. Mingus transcends jazz composition and moves into full-on orchestration in this. Epic. Moving. Fantastic. | |
