Summer 2014 Live, An Anticipatory List

I am fucking my future self over and spending virtually all of my expendable income on concerts and festivals this summer. However, it's hard to be that upset with my decision when you look at what I've got lined up:
1Frog Eyes
Tears of the Valedictorian

This show just happened. Frog Eyes were alright, but they opened for:
2Thee Silver Mount Zion
Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light on Everything

They played this entire album and it was god damn glorious. It's still my favourite
record of the year but they took it to another level life. Phenomenal show, a great
start to the live music season.
3Baths
Cerulean

This show might be tomorrow night actually, I should check. Anyway, I'm definitely
excited to finally catch him live.
4First Aid Kit
The Lion's Roar

I am going to catch their show in Vancouver the week before Sasquatch because
their festival timeslot conflicts with....someone, I can't remember.
5De La Soul
3 Feet High and Rising

The next ~30 artists are all playing at Sasquatch 2014 (in Washington state), listed
in chronological order. The only really troubling conflict of the festival from my
perspective is this one, on the first day.
6Liars
Mess

I have decided to catch all of this show, which means I'll only be able to see 20
minutes of De La Soul.
7Chance the Rapper
Acid Rap

I caught this guy live recently and he kills it. Very excited to see if he can
recreate the magic at a festival
8Phosphorescent
Muchacho

~~festival music
9Foals
Holy Fire

(see above)
10Phantogram
Eyelid Movies

Play that one song that always gets remixed!!!
11Foster The People
Torches

I really wish there was some other band to see at this time. PS why are Foster the
People still around? gonna shotgun so many brewz to Pumped Up Kicks
12Mogwai
Young Team

Excited for these guys because when I saw them in 2009 you could hear way too
much Franz Ferdinand bleeding over from the main stage. Gross. (GROSS Rudy)
13OutKast
ATLiens

Basically the purpose of me making this list is to tell you all that I'm seeing OutKast
TWICE this summer. THE YEAR IS 2014.
14Die Antwoord
$O$

I actually think these guys kinda suck but I spent a lot of time in South Africa and I
like the accents tee hee.
15Rudimental
Home

fuck you I like that one song it bangs
16The Dodos
Carrier

The start of day 2, oh FECK yes
17City and Colour
Little Hell

I mean how many fucking times has this guy been at a festival I've gone to. I
should heckle, just start yelling PO LA ROIIIIIIDS....OF PO LAR BEARRRRRRRS at him.
This stuff is cool but seriously I miss AoF and am still pissed off/bitter.
18Band of Skulls
Himalayan

I mean woo festival music you know?
19Deafheaven
Sunbather

they fucking WOULD BE the one god damn "metal" act to every play Sasquatch... (I
honestly think this might be the first...definitely the only one this year).
Regardless, I am excited for this. It conflicts with the next two though.
20Washed Out
Paracosm

I seen 5 minutes of this show twice and I guess there's a third one coming up!
Because I am not missing a minute of:
21Neko Case
The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight...

This will rule. 20 minutes of Deafheaven, 5 of Washed Out, and then an hour of
this. Music festivals are weird.
22Panda Bear
Person Pitch

I'm probably going to try and be really high for this.
23TOKiMONSTA
Midnight Menu

I bet this is going to be amazing.
24The National
Boxer

This will be my third time seeing them live so I am fairly certain I will have a 3.5 -
great to 5 - classic time at this show.
25Cut Copy
Free Your Mind

I'm going to get this album cover tattoo'd on my ass cheek what do you think.
26tUnE-yArDs
w h o k i l l

Have seen before. Is good. Excitement. [start of day 3]
27Cold War Kids
Mine is Yours

Have seen before. Is OK. Indifference.
28Elbow
The Take Off And Landing Of Everything

I'm not a huge fan but one of my fesitval buds is and I have a hunch they're going
to make the most of the spectacular Gorge Amphitheater.
29Haim
Days Are Gone

If I had to pick one set to represent the Sasquatch experience, for better or for
worse, I have a feeling this would be the one. I might catch them in the Malkin
Bowl (in Stanley Park) in a week because their set overlaps with the next one, and,
uh....
30Waxahatchee
Cerulean Salt

Even though I've seen her before, I'm not missing any of this. I love her music so
much. So so much.
31Kid Cudi
Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager

I really don't give a shit about Kid Cudi but I made out with a hot stranger at his
set in 2010 so 5/5
32Portugal. The Man
Church Mouth

I am very excited to see these guys live. I do like their studio albums quite a bit
(mainly the older stuff) but everything they've done leaves me with these strange
impressions that the songs really just burst apart in a live setting. I have heard
this is the case from quite a few people: their slay live apparently. Also my friend
group loves this band and we all know all the words oh man this should be grrrreat.
33Tycho
Dive

just announced BUT the exact same time as Portugal the Man. So I think I'll miss
all of this. His new album was just ok, so I'm not that worried, but I still would love
to see his set. He's playing at 10 PM on the last day too which is a better slot
than you'd have thought he'd book.
34Queens Of The Stone Age
...Like Clockwork

Right up there with OutKast in terms of who I'm most excited to see this summer. I
can't wait for this show.
35Major Lazer
Guns Dont Kill People... Lazers Do

Throwing down to some siqq beatz with some douchebros will probably turn out to
be a very fitting way to end Sasquatch 2014.
36Nine Inch Nails
The Downward Spiral

The rest of the list (almost) contains the acts playing at Pemberton Music Festival
(near Whistler, BC). They are listed in the order appearing on the poster because
the schedule has not been released yet. I've seen NIN before but I wasn't that
into it. I'm much more interested in their live show now, and I am surprised and
pleased to see them announced as headliners of a festival so close to me.
37OutKast
Stankonia

When I heard that their reunion show was going to feature ~40 festival dates, I
started praying for the best. And I mean damn I am good at praying because they
are playing the two major festivals near me. I am unimaginably excited for both of
their shows, especially after seeing Big Boi in 2013 and being blown away.
SDGHSDGHSDG summer come quick!!
38Deadmau5
4x4=12

I thought dead mow five's fifteen minutes had expired but I guess not. Drugs!!
39Soundgarden
Superunknown

hahaha what? as you'll see, this festival has some solid throwback acts. (and I
didn't even list the comedians, which include Bob Saget and Tom Green. Oh man.)
40Frank Ocean
Channel Orange

8)
41Kendrick Lamar
Section.80

Finally I get to see Kendrick. Throw your hands up for hiiipower.
42Metric
Fantasies

This band has jumped the shark and I bet kinda blows live but I had a big crush on
this album so let me be. I can't believe I've never seen them before but woo right.
43Modest Mouse
The Lonesome Crowded West

I'm so impressed with the headliners that Pemberton was able to book in its first
year. This festival is going to be solid for years to come (I hope). Modest Mouse
live (again) OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT can't wait.
44Snoop Dogg
Doggystyle

See what I said about the great throwback artists? He's listed as Snoop Dogg and
not fucking Lion so I think that is a positive sign.
45Grimes
Visions

I guarantee that she will mention, at least once, that Montreal is way better than
Vancouver.
46The Flaming Lips
The Terror

It's pretty shitty that Wayne turned into an asshole but I hope they still
~transcend~ live. This will be my third time seeing them.
47Blondie
Blondie

Blondie? fucking BLONDIE? hell yeah Pemberton, you go Pemberton.
48Girl Talk
Feed the Animals

Always fun live/inebriated and if you disagree you haven't been laid in at least a
calendar year.
49TV on the Radio
Nine Types of Light

I am ridiculously excited for this. It will be my first time seeing them since the
death of Gerard Smith :( but I hear they still crush live. Great band.
50Young the Giant
Young the Giant

~festival music~
51Matthew Good
Vancouver

I'm learning that a lot of people hate this guy but damn. Nostalgia for days. I have
also never seen any iteration of his band live which is insane because he's played
every small town in BC soooo many times.
52ScHoolboy Q
Oxymoron

[something about white people]
53Tyler The Creator
Bastard

he's playing at the same time as TOKiMONSTA at Sasquatch so I guess I will check
this out if there are no conflicts. Honestly, I'm not going to care at all if something
better is booked in his time slot because I bet this show/audience is going to be
annoying. [something else about white people]
54Earl Sweatshirt
Doris

This, on the other hand, I am pretty excited for. Earl is a great rapper.
55St. Vincent
St. Vincent

This is definitely one of my most anticipated acts of the summer. I was pissed off
that I couldn't go to her recent Vancouver show and I hear unanimously that she is
amazing live.
56The New Pornographers
Twin Cinema

Canada!
57Sloan
Never Hear The End Of It

hey look more Canada!
58Stars
Set Yourself On Fire

hey you guys even more Canada! Go Habs!!
59Flying Lotus
Until the Quiet Comes

I would watch this guy play live until the end of time. His live show is entrancing
OH GOD am I pumped for this.
60RL Grime
High Beams

#uncrew
61Sholhmo
Vacation

In terms of DJing style, I can honestly say that this guy is one of my favourites.
He picks great classic tracks to throw into his set (anything from super obscure to
mainstream pop) and he's so high energy behind the decks. He also has produced a
handfull of sublime tunes himself. I'm very excited to dance my ass off to Shlohmo
for a second time.
62Dinosaur Jr.
You're Living All Over Me

Honestly how the hell is Dino Jr listed this low on the poster? I would have figured a
name this big to be second/third row material. I've seen J Mascis solo and it was
alright but I am very excited to finally see the full band. I didn't know if I ever
would.
63Fucked Up
The Chemistry of Common Life

elbows up
64Hey Rosetta!
Seeds

I think this is one of the most underexposed Canadian indie-rock bands. RIYL
Arcade Fire. Their song "Welcome" is one of my favourites. This show is gonna be
special.
65XXYYXX
XXYYXX

don't just stand there bust a move
66Metz
Metz

I saw them in a basement and they are #loud.
67Kishi Bashi
Lighght

[end of festival lineups] this guy put on one of my favourite shows ever in 2012 and
he's coming back to the same venue in July. My expectations are high.
68Jon Hopkins
Immunity

Copy/paste last descriptions but with 2013 in place of 2012. This is guaranteed to
be a fun night. Jon Hopkins is an amazingly talented DJ and producer.
69Brand New
Daisy

September first I FINALLY get to see my high school jamz live. I've got some old
friends coming to town for this oh man oh man oh man I gotta dust off the N64.
